blackballaffair 1 copy1 Hot Shots: 8th Annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball *Updated*

The stars were out in full force tonight to attend the Alicia Keys-hosted 8th annual ‘Keep A Child Alive’ Black Ball, held at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.  The star studded event, with previous years’ guest lists boasting names like Whitney Houston, Beyonce, and more, included appearances and performances from the likes of Will.I.am, Tyra Banks, Serena Williams, Mary J. Blige, Usher, and Mrs. Beatz herself (among others).

This year’s ‘Ball’, which honored late Beatle George Harrison, benefits Keys’ Keep A Child Alive foundation.  See more photos below:

The Tyra Banks Show To End!

tyra banks show The Tyra Banks Show To End!

In news which comes very much as a surprise, supermodel-turned talk-show host Tyra Banks has pulled the plug daytime Emmy award-winning ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ after just five seasons.

Banks, 36, made the announcement exclusively to People.com, confirming that the show, most memorable for its ‘weave-exposing, cellulite-revealing and tear-jerking moments’, will cease production at the end of its current season in Spring 2010.

According to People, Banks will focus on the launch of Bankable Studios, a New York-based film production company currently reviewing possible projects. Sticking to her mission, Banks aims to bring “positive images of women to the big screen”.

“My next huge steps will allow me to reach more women and young girls to help us all feel as fierce as we truly are,” Banks says.

People.com cites an insider as saying: “Tyra is sad because she’ll be missing so much of the daily connection to her viewers, but excited at the same time to be taking on a new challenge.” With encouragement from filmmaker Tyler Perry and longtime mentor Oprah Winfrey, Banks is “redefining beauty for women in film,” adds the source. “With Oprah’s big announcement this year, I think that gave Tyra the confidence to get out there and follow her longtime dream of film producing.”

Those worried about the future of  America’s Next Top Model need not worry, however. The  show slated to return for its 15th season in February.

“There’s a lot cooking right now and a lot of fire burning in my heart,” Banks writes in an open letter on her Web site. “And I salute you my amazing family of viewers; without you there never would have been a Tyra Show. I really love you all.”

It’s great to see Tyra making strides and further etching her name in the history books. However, I must say I would have much preferred if she pulled the plug on America’s Next Top Model, which has long run its course. Just saying…

50 Cent On ‘The Tyra Banks Show’

Rapper 50 Cent visited the ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ to promote his new album, ‘Before I Self-Destruct’, recently. The music mogul took part in a hilarious discussion with the former supermodel and her guests. 50′s LP debuted on the Billboard 200 with over 160, 000 units, an occurrence that he blamed on album leaks. I don’t want to give anything away but his ” voluptuous apple” booty comment was erm…yeah..

Sam’s 2 pence: Is it me or is anyone else shocked at the 180 ol’ Curtis seems to have done on the personality tip? He came across really well, yet almost seemed like an entirely different person….

Randomness: Tyra Show – Women Who Beat Their Men (A Must-See)

In what has to be one of the more bizarre Tyra Show episodes I’ve ever seen, yesterday’s show tackled the topic of women who abuse their male partners. I won’t spoil it, but this is definitely a must-see.

I sure as hell don’t condone violence either way, but some of this was seriously disturbing; particularly the fact Ms. Kendra looked like she was gonna whoop her guy when they got home!

Chris Rock & Raven On Tyra; Talk ‘Good Hair’

Continuing along the promotional trail for his new Docu-Movie ‘Good Hair’, Chris Rock stopped by The Tyra Banks Show yesterday to talk about the project. Actress Raven Symone, who features in the movie, also appeared on the show. Dually hilarious and insightful. A great watch.

Donnie Trash Talks Aubrey

While promoting his debut album ‘Just A Rolling Stone’ (did anyone else NOT know it was out?! LOL) on Rock Me TV, Donnie decided to air out Danity Kane’s Aubrey. I won’t ruin it, however I doubt Aubrey will be pleased to hear his comments. SMH:

You’d think Donnie would have more sense than to trash his co-star and ‘expose’ the behind the scenes aspect of a show he is still starring in with the very same Aubrey. Then again, I guess these are the type of stunts pulled when your album sells a pathetic 20, 000 copies – as Donnie’s did. Any publicity is good publicity, ey?

Kanye West Arrested At Airport

kanye Kanye West Arrested At AirportRapper Kanye West was arrested today after a scuffle LAX airport in Los Angeles:
Kanye West has just been arrested at LAX for felony vandalism. A still photographer was trying to take pics of Kanye at the American Airlines terminal. According to our guy on the scene, Kanye allegedly confronted the photog and smashed his camera to the ground.

Our photog then began videotaping the scene when Kanye’s assistant grabbed our camera — a struggle ensued and the assistant threw the video camera to the ground, breaking it. When Kanye realized our camera guy had videotaped the incident, he rushed our guy and yelled, “Gimme that f**king tape!”

Both Kanye and his assistant have been arrested and will be booked. {Source}

My girl Necole Bitchie summed it up when saying: “Out of all days to be flipping out at an airport, this is definitely not the best one..”

Tyra Tackles Skin Bleaching

The season premiere of the Tyra Banks Show aired yesterday, with the supermodel-turned talk show host addressing the issue of skin bleaching in the black community. Check out Tyra talking about one of the show’s guests – a woman who bleaches the skin of her 3 young children -while doing the promo rounds for the show. Check it out:

It’s such a shame that in this day and age, such closed minded notions of what beauty/good looks mean are still prevalent. SMH…

Tricky: Hip-Hop To Blame For Violent Britain

vice nightclub opening 35 wenn1534188 Tricky: Hip Hop To Blame For Violent BritainBritish musician Tricky (no I don’t know who he is either) blames Hip-Hop for rising crime in the UK, insisting ‘it has created a generation of angry and violent young men’. Check out the report via Contact Music below:

The artist, who mixes rock, hip-hop and pop in his music, claims parts of Britain are now more dangerous than New York, and the popular hip-hop culture must be held responsible.

Tricky – who has performed with Massive Attack – says, “I love hip-hop, but it has to take some responsibility for the gun culture we’ve got over here. We’re getting super-violent. You can walk around the Bronx for days on end and nobody bothers you. “In England, you can say the wrong thing in a pub and, before you know it, you’ve got a bottle over your head or a bullet in your brain. English people have got quicker tempers.”

His genuine opinion? Maybe. A publicity stunt? A possibility. Stupid? Hell yes! Granted the crime rate here in the UK has risen in recent years (and is a hot topic in the media at present), it’s very unoriginal to take aim at Hip-Hop. To say the mainstream UK Hip-Hop movement is lacking would be an understatement, so I’m assuming he means US Hip-Hop (the only kind we’re exposed to on mass). Yet, he’s contradicting himself in his ‘parts of England are tougher than the Bronx’ statement, as it’s largely the same thing we’re listening to around the globe. What’s more, without generalising, it’s highly unlikely that you’d find your average Hip-Hop listener in a ‘pub’. For someone who claims to ‘love Hip-Hop’, he sure did little to show it.

In a broader context, I wanted to know if you feel Hip-Hop is responsible for violence/crime in your own locality/country? If so, why? If not, why?

Tyra Covers The New York Times

fa8cf95f6864a7b96e36bcc92e405c4a Tyra Covers The New York Times Supermodel turned media mogul Tyra Banks appears on the June 1st cover of The New York Times Magazine. In her feature, the talk show host describes herself in as a mixture of Oprah Winfrey with a dash of Martha Stewart thrown in.
Speaking on Tyra, NYT staff writer says: “Her brand, like her trademark ‘tough but still smiling’ smile, is consistent in all her shows: serious about the frivolous; empathetic and empowering, and always, always aimed at young women, across all races. It’s girly TV with a punch”.

Cool cover. It’s great to see Tyra garnering so much recognition outside of the modelling world. It goes to show that sky really is the limit. More power to her.

Brandy Signs With Epic

brandy123456 Brandy Signs With Epic Following months of speculation, AOL Black Voices have confirmed that R&B star Brandy has indeed signed with Epic Records, with plans to release a new album by the year’s end. The singer, 28, will no doubt be hoping that her new beginning over at Epic will allow for her to leave recent troubles in the past.
It’s been almost four years since the songstress severed ties with longtime label Atlantic, following the release and subsequent poor performance of her highly underrated (IMO) ‘Afrodisiac’ LP. I’m definitely amped to see what she serves up this go round. {Source}
