Rihanna Talks Image

Published: Saturday 24th May 2008 by Sam
Rihanna Talks Image In a recent interview with The Guardian over here in the UK, R&B/Pop star Rihanna spoke about her ‘edgy’ image, asserting that it was her own decision to deviate from the industry norm of ‘long blonde’ hair who she identified Beyonce, Ciara, Christina Millian and Mariah as rocking:

“I felt like the whole world had long, curly, flowy blonde hair. Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah, Christina Milian. Everybody wanted to be like everybody else. So I cut my hair and they made me put my long hair back in as extensions. The second time, I didn’t have any discussions, nothing. I just cut it, I dyed it black, I went into the studio making music my way. I found myself all at once. I like things strong, edgy, a little to the left. I don’t like things that are expected – nothing cliched. When I first started, I didn’t know anything. I didn’t really have a say. The second album, I got a little more freedom”

Granted today Rihanna’s image seems pretty legit, I find her comments real hard to swallow. IMO the whole ‘I’m was good girl, now I’m bad…look at my black hair and dominatrix outfits’ was overly contrived and screamed ‘record label construct’.

she better not name drop people who are more talented than her. no wonder she’s talking about her haircut when she can’t focus on the fact she can’t sing, dance, perform, write, produce and has waxy ears.

Go head ri ri, do you dont let the label make you into what they want…and im happy she spoke on it, people always tryna compare her to beyonce..i love b and all but i was getting tired of seeing that image, ri ri came with something new and i love it…and as for the prson above me…stop hatin

  4. melissa May 24, 2008

Good for her, but what really sets people away from each other is the talent, not the hair.

  5. Anonymous May 24, 2008

Acting like she’s so original. It’s like every part of her has been copied off someone else. First she was acting like Beyonce. She wears her hair like Victoria Beckham has been doing for years. She gets the exact same tattoo as Fefe Dobson and puts it in the exact same place.

    How original….NOT.

I liked her for her unique style, but it’s not even hers so forget her. Like someone said, talent is more important than hair. I’d rather the typical blonde weave with a stunning voice than a short cut with someone who is hopeless at lipsynching/singing.

I bet Rihanna don’t even know who the fvk the one hit wonder fefe dobson is. when she had that i song Rihanna was just a little girl back in Barbados going to school. + fefe dobson type of music don’t play in the islands. So ppl stop talking about fefe if she was such a big star her ass wouldn’t get drop by Island records that also goes for kelis who also got drop by her label.
Rihanna gives the hair cut personality no one was talking about the hair cut until Rihanna had it. Madonna did not invent the vogue dance. but she makes it main stream even though it was black gay men who invent it.

  9. Anonymous May 24, 2008

I like Rihanna. The pon de replay song was the hotness and she continues to good music. Her style separates her from the rest. She only trying to be herself. I never saw where she was trying to “act like Beyonce”. I mean..Bey is Shakira and Tina. What was the point of that? Do you Rihanna.

  10. Anonymous May 24, 2008

I understand she wants to be different, but Posh and Kelis rocked that hairstyle before she did, so no it’s really not that original.

  11. Anonymous May 24, 2008

Rihanna stole Kelis’ hairstyle and Kelis’ stylist from the “Bossy” video!!! Kelis had the whole glam rock thing 1st. (But Rihanna did take it to the next level.)

I respect Rih Rih for doing her because the industry will make you lose yourself if you do not stand up for something, Mary J and other artist has spoken out on that, plus Mary gave Rih her props for doing what she did. And despite what people make think she is talented in her own lane and thats why she stands out because she is different. And Sam its no secret you are very anti-Rih so you need to stop making posts about her because they are automatically biased! Like that b******* you posted on her song going #1, live with it and shut the hell up because she doing the damn thing no matter what! And for the record, she wears the hell out of her haircut now comment on that haters!

i hate wwhen ppl take about themselves like they better then everyone. and why she gotta put other pplz names in her mouth. Beyonce might have the “typicial” blonde long weave, but she damn sure can sing, perform, dance, and do pretty much everything better then rihanna. I aint saying rihannas music aint hott but it is not on the same level of bee and riri will never be on the same level of bee not even by tryna make chris brown into her Jayz. and i dont kno why she tryna say shes soo original with her hair like she f***** made up the hairstyle. Come on yall, many others have had that same style b4. to me she looks like a man

  14. Anonymous May 24, 2008

Where does she say anything about making up a haircut? She is only saying that everybody was following a cookie cutter image and she didn’t want to. She named beyonce in addition to other female artists. She did not say being Beyonce was her goal or anyone elses. Also, she does not say anthing about her and Chris Brown trying to be like Beyonce and JayZ. Are they the only celebrities in a relationship? Oh, I’m sorry, she should try to make more meaningful music like Freakum Dress and Upgrade U. There is nothing wrong if you don’t like Rihanna’s music, but some of you should just jump off a bridge.

  15. Anonymous May 24, 2008

oh please, who is she? trying to think she original with the hair. try of this girl thinking she better then everyone esle

  16. Anonymous May 25, 2008

They ALLA SING BETTER THAN HER.
    ARE MORE BEAUTIFUL.
Rihanna sit ur yoddeling ass down.

  17. Anonymous May 25, 2008

“I bet Rihanna don’t even know who the fvk the one hit wonder fefe dobson is.”

Of course she does. They were labelmates. Rihanna said Fefe “inspired” her style. Fair enough, BUT aspiring to be like someone is different from copying their image. Fefe fans get confused between pics of Rihanna and Fefe because they look practically the same now. It’s creepy. It shows that she’s not following the main crowd, she’s still following another crowd of celebs though who rock short hair cuts.

Plus she may not be doing the long, flowing locks like most other female celebs, but she’s still doing the skimpy clothing routines like the rest. It’s sickening. She started stripping off at such a young age. Little girls go to her concerts- that’s the parents’ faults.

  18. Anonymous May 25, 2008

Oh God she’s so pretentious ! I cannot believe what she just said, for info Ri-Ri, Kelis did that kinda hair long way before you do, so just shut up and try to sing and dance and not talking s*** about ya hair or ya look, U just 19, u got no personality, don’t name singers who have

  19. Anonymous May 25, 2008

why does everyone hate her? lol

i mean she’s nothing original but sheesh at least give her some credit the girl’s only 19 and she’s more composed than most grownups.

  20. Anonymous May 25, 2008

    B*TCH PLEASE.

ciara had black hair a long time ago.

and fefe dobson and kelis rocked that bob a long time ago too.

don’t get full of yourself. and keep my girl’s name out of ya pondaforehead mouth

  21. Mark May 25, 2008

Gotta disagree with nearly all of you… We are all sure that Rihanna is pretty un-talented compared to the likes of Beyonce, Ciara ETC…

However, I have always liked her style, it seems to me, it’s the only thing that she is really creative with…

    Lil less hating people!

omg whoever responded to my comment your madd stupiddd. im not saying she sed all those things im saying thats what she means by it. of course shes not gonna be like “i made up that hairstyle” but she tryna act like she did. I didnt care about her saying that she didnt want the long curly blonde hair. that finee. but she sed “Everbody Wanted to be like everybody else” now thats what got me bad B**** how would u know that? I dont think beyonce woke up one morning and was like “i think ima be like everyone else and get a long blonde weave” why? cuz she been having her hair like that since she was 15! and its so funny that she named exactly those artists cuz to me those are the most talented female artists out there, except for christina millian. She just tryna get her name out there.

  23. venusasboy May 25, 2008

there’s nothing original about rihanna or her image. her “career” has only been just imagine, no substance. to those whom felt her image is unique (not contrived) is truly not cultured beyond the realm of b.e.t. or the last 10 years.

    cheers.

  24. Anonymous May 25, 2008

THEIR IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORIGINALITY AND BEEN DIFFERENT
SHE SAID SHE WANTED TO BE DIFFERENT. SHE DID NOT SAY SHE ORDINATE ANYTHING.

  25. Anonymous May 25, 2008

her hair is fly and her cd is hot!

  26. Anonymous May 25, 2008

she is just a record label puppet and has no imput into her own career which is why people like neyo and justin r written music for her, and her stylist is choosing clothes for her. she shudn’t try act like she is more orginal than the talents of beyonce or mariah.
im soo sick of her, she needs to take her and her umbrella bck home to the isalnd.

  27. Anonymous May 25, 2008

@ anonymous 6:50am. What I understood from that comment (I could be completely wrong because I was not there and have not read the whole article) was that around the time she came out everybody was wearing long weaves. Remember in the 90s people wore short haircuts (Monica, Toni Braxon, and Kelly Rowland). But, around the time she came out with Pon De Whatever that song is everybody had the same style. Is her new style completely her own, probably not. But, she is doing well now that she’s changed her image. She could be in the same boat as Kelly, Amerie, Cassy, Kelis, Fefe, Mya, and I could go on, and on, and on. Very few artists have say so in their own careers anyway.

  28. Anonymous May 25, 2008

good job rihanna! ii really adored the cut and new style. i think u are reaching your prime. but i love the others too. beyonce is amazing as well

  29. Anonymous May 25, 2008

well if i could pick anybody that ‘different’ out of the bunch it would be ciara before her.

changing your hair which people mention has already been done and singing the same irreplaceable variation that sounds like everything else neyo or whoever else has written it not ‘different’

    sorry

  30. Anonymous May 25, 2008

WOW you haters are soo sad. When rihanna first came out her label wanted her to have this innocent island girl / mini beyonce look and sound …now that shes finaally coming into her own you al are finding other singers that she could be copyiingg . how sad. and its soo funny that all the people you name are not even original.. im sorry but nowdays theres nothing called originality. KELIS DID NOT INVENT THAT F****** HAIRCUT. SINGERS AND CELEBS HAVE BEEN ROCKING IT WAS BEFORE HER. IF YOU ALL HATE RIHANNA THEN DONT POST ON HER TOPICS AND WAIST YOUR TIME.
AND SAM DONT MAKE ANY MORE POSTS ABOUT RIHANNA IF YOUR GONNA HATE ON HER JUST BECAUSE YOUR FAVOURITE KIZZY ROWLAND IS HAVING A HARD TIME TO EVEN STAY RELEVENT WHILE RIHANNA IS SUCCESSFUL

    SMHH soooooooooo sad.

  31. Anonymous May 25, 2008

thats ashame cuz ciara had the whole bad girl (black hair, dominatrix) when she came out with get up, which was before umbrella. so ri-ri need to get it straight cuz aint nobody tryna be nobody else, but themself, especially Ciara!

  32. Anonymous May 25, 2008

    RIHANNA IS THE BEST!!!!!!

    F*** THE REST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. jer. May 25, 2008

Sorry, but Mariah was the first colored woman to rock that blonde weave so effortlessly. and people need to deal with it

  34. Anonymous May 26, 2008

She has a nice little image thing going on, I’ll give that much. She doesn’t have longevity though. The problem with having a MUSIC career based on your image is someone else can and will come along with a better one. So she is basically doing nothing but lip syncing and half singing while her stylist and hair stylist do all the work.

  35. D May 26, 2008

There is nothing wrong with her comment. She isn’t dissing anyone. She listed examples to illustrate her point that all the popular women in the business have this typical look. This is perfectly acceptable. She is simply trying to ensure that everyone understands what she is speaking about.
She even stated how it is possibly that it’s the industry executives who cause this because they wanted her hair long too.

I love Rihanna and all the ladies she mentioned. Let’s not allow our biases to let us imply what was not inferred. I mean.. how did dominatrix outfits, voice comparisons, etc get into this discussion? Stop the HATE! I want to see all the ladies succeed so we can have some variety.

PS. If you dont like her voice (I suspect b/c she is not american)that doesnt mean her style isn’t fly.

  36. love4musica May 26, 2008

Before everyone starts getting happy that Rihanna is “original” please don’t forget that she said herself (probably at a dig towards Beyonce) that her label said that she can’t look or sing like Beyonce which is why the direction of her music has changed.

  37. Anonymous May 28, 2008

Those number one worldwide hit singles back to back, sizzling hot looks, supersize magazine covers and millions are choking you haterz aren’t they. Beyonce is forced to make room for another superstar who’s younger hotter and much prettier. Oh dear.

  38. Anonymous May 28, 2008

1.Rihanna needs to stop name-dropping about people way more talented than her.
2.Mariah is anything but cookie-cutter…all of you have to admit that the only thing that has changed about MiMi since she came out is that her hair is staright instead of curly!
3.Everybody knows that it wasn’t her that came up with this ‘bad girl’ image – it was her label
4.Rihanna is hot right now but when a younger, prettier more talented person comes along (which WILL happen soon) Rihanna will be forced to fall back so what are the stans going to do then?
5.Theres nothing original about Rihanna each part of her has been taken from somebody else. About 80% of the stans wouldn’t even be checking for her if it weren’t for umbrella.

so Rihanna needs to deflate her big dome & so does the stans!

  39. imagho3 July 30, 2011

Yall need to stop the hatin. She was not trying to come for Bey (if she ws who cares….b**** is str8 swagjack). All she’s sayin is she wants 2 be different. And i do believe she wants to be bad
