Rihanna’s ‘Rated R’ Price Slashed To $3.99

Published: Monday 23rd Nov 2009 by Sam
Rihanna Rated R Review

In a move that was no doubt actioned to ensure a #1 debut, Rihanna‘s new LP ‘Rated R’ is now selling for a paltry $3.99 on Amazon MP3. Yet, despite Ms. Fenty’s team pulling all the stops for a #1 charting on the Billboard 200 next week, Interscope’s Lady GaGa‘s sophomore effort ‘The Fame Monster’ is currently sitting comfortably at #1 on iTunes – which serves as one of the biggest music retailers overall. {Source 1} {Source 2}

Oh RiRi! After all the publicity, big budget videos and all that jazz, stunts like this still need to be pulled to garner decent sales. From a business standpoint, I can’t hate on her label’s game. Yet, from an artistic standpoint – which is where the bulk of my critique of Ms. Fenty stems from – it really says a lot about her label’s belief in how many folks will part with their cash to buy her album. I mean, correct me if wrong, but you don’t see the Alicia’s, Beyonce’s, Whitney’s and co selling their album a fraction of the cost to save face. I mean how embarrassing would it be after all the hype, 20/20 interview etc for her not to pull in some seriously decent/great numbers first week?

Randomness: While my review of the AMA’s will be up later today; if Rihanna’s performance wasn’t the night’s worst, I really don’t know what was. A mess.

The night’s WORST? If you’re not blind, I don’t know what you are. SMH

  3. Rihanna You Fail November 23, 2009

LOL HER AND HER LABEL ARE SERIOUSLY PUSHING FOR HUGE SALES, LIKE HOW DESPERATE CAN THEY BE? FIRST WEEK OF ALBUM ON SALE AND THEY DO IT FOR CHEAP, SO PEOPLE WILL BUY IT.

THE PRICE DOESN’T MATTER, I WON’T PART ANY CASH ON IT, EVEN IF IT WAS FOR FREE, I WOULD TELL DEF JAM TO KEEP IT.

  4. mikey November 23, 2009

can wait till those # come in.. she’s gonna sell crazy albums.. gaga is still a re release.. 3.99 what she’s gonna be #1 or # 2 & best believe its goin to grow..

  5. Golden J November 23, 2009

Um actually Beyonce did pull this s*** with one of her albums, it was selling for $5 on iTunes for a while. Check your facts Sam.

Also, Alicia’s album has been pushed back and she’s added tracks like a Drake feature and a “Empire State of Mind” knock-off in order to boost interest. What does THAT say about artistic integrity?

Of course you’re right on one thing, this is obviously done to boost the album. But iTunes is not a good indicator of first week sales, FYI. That said, I hope GaGa does really well because her album is amazing!

(Also, you do know that GaGa’s album is only $8 right? So it has a good incentive to be bought too…)

  6. Eyo November 23, 2009

Um, no. Amazon, com sells an album for $3.99 every week and it’s usually only for one day. It’s just their latest marketing strategy. It happened last week with Leona Lewis’ album, the week before with Carrie Underwood. They have been doing that for months now.

  7. Golden J November 23, 2009

Oh yeah, and her performance was clearly NOT the worst, you’re waaaayyy too biased Sam. She actually sang live, something that Janet and J.Lo did not do. At least give her credit for that. (Also, her songs are hot and Rated R is actually a good album, even though you will never listen to it because it isn’t a cookie-cutter beyonce knockoff)

  8. wtf November 23, 2009

sam, i am calling 150k- 200k…she is gonna flop hard…that is what you get…she was the worst for the night…she sucked baddd….what you forget sam is that not only was she hyped last night, her album has been promoted on every site known to man kind…i think its terms if promo, she has had the cream of the cake.. i dnt think any artists have ever had that..not even bey or gaga…i mean who has thier song up on CNN????..she is gonna flop and it will be the joke of ther year….cant wait till the numbers are in..Team gaga who is slaying on itunes,,,,

her overall sales for this album are going to be disasterous..she will never tour alone coz noone will buy t’s to see the garbage..such a shame…..

  9. Anon November 23, 2009

WOW I think Eyo just ether’d you Sam. You f’ing idiot!

This is what you get when you check NO facts and just post whatever you think will hurt the artists you don’t like!

It’s a temporary promotion that is clearly done for other stars ALL THE TIME.

The CD is still full price on amazon.com. And maybe Rihanna is only 5 on iTunes because it is so much cheaper at the Amazon m** store.

  10. whystillinbusiness November 23, 2009

If y’all dont stop saying that Rihanna sang live! She did not! She came out with you not seeing her singing and if you listen when she did start live and it was a major difference. She was the worst performer of the night. It’s just not Sam, it’s all over the world agreeing with Sam she SUCKED!!

  11. wtf November 23, 2009

please can someone tell that dumbass @eyo that its not itunes its the labels that decide to slash the prices..

Sam, one to look out for that people are sleeping on is susan boyle…did not know she was also releasing this week…crazy..she is already ahead of rihanna in the uk..bwahhhhhhh!!!

  12. FI November 23, 2009

    Business business business…its all business!!

  13. Anon November 23, 2009

Good Girl Gone Bad only sold 168k in its first week…Rihanna could actually beat that this release. This could make her maybe the only artist this year to outsell her previous album in her new album’s first week.

@Whystill… she still sang live, there was just a backing track on certain parts of the song. Like on the “that’s just the way the game is played” line right before the chorus of Wait Your Turn, that was obviously backing track, but she wasn’t lip syncing. She was singing live on all the parts where she was actually at her mic.

@WTF – the point is that MANY artists have had this exact same treatment, i.e. the $3.99 amazon m** price for a day or a week. Carrie and Leona both did it very recently. So this is done for everyone.

  14. Eyo November 23, 2009

@WTF…I was referring to Amazon.com not iTunes. And regardless who’s decision it is, the “discount” has been occurring for a while now with numerous other major artists and releases.

  15. Christian November 23, 2009

I’m actually a fan of RiRi and I agree with you Sam that her performance was a HOT MESS!!! It was just BLAH to me. I wouldn’t say it was the worst performance of the night because cleary there were some other trainwrecks on that stage last night. lol

  16. JoshZilla November 23, 2009

    1) Rihanna’s performance at the AMA’s was forced, contrived, weak and and reminded me of Britney’s failed comeback VMA performance. Riri looked half asleep, sounded like a billy goat, and can’t pull off this rocker image. It’s not her. Her handlers are trying so hard to package her a certain way but you can tell its all for show.
    2) I wouldn’t even download her album for free!!! She needs to sit down, do some soul searching and stop trying to sell an image that is not her. At least with Lady Gaga, you know she’s a creative person, but I highly doubt, Rihanna is the creative force behind all her stuff. She just sings songs other people wrote, wears stuff that other people picked out, and does whatever her people think will get attention.

  17. Matty November 23, 2009

i lovee rihanna, i sometimes stan for her but i and nobody else can deny that her performance was a hot mess. her vocals down to her stage presence, it didnt do anything for me. i still love her, but gaga has overtaken rihanna in my estimations, she KILLED it last night, way ahead of most of the performers last night. number one on itunes, GO GAGAAA!!

  18. R****** November 23, 2009

haha I Am… Sasha Fierce sold 5 million copies and it was $13.99. Haha guess you ain’t tha Queen Bey

  19. GeeMan November 23, 2009

I must agree with the majority and say Rihanna performance last nite was a disappointment to say the least. The rocker image is not her it is something forced to make the public believe other wise. As for amazon they sell albums weekly at that rate so that is no surprise. I must say the album as a whole does nothing for me other then hard everything else seems slow and depressing imo and even though she has improved vocally her vocals still leave much to be desired.

  20. R****** November 23, 2009

Hahahaha She’s the joke of the music business!!!! After all that hype… Her first single ‘Russian Roulette’ is FLOPPING hard on the charts right now…. Guess there’s only one Queen Bey!!!!!!

  21. SEAN November 23, 2009

People if you want to go to a good blog that isn’t designed by a petty hater, visit The Prophet Blog! Sam steals all the articles from that and twists their views and opinions to suit his own biased views!

  22. wtf November 23, 2009

@anon and @eyo, no offense but both of you need to STFU.. rihanna right now is for 3.99 on ITUNES…this is ITUNES not amazon where gaga is 7.99…artists who lower thoer prices normally are simply not selling…both carrie and leona did not do well at all..she sold 60k…anyways, even at 3.99 rihanna is at number 7 on itunes…behind gaga, susan, john meyer who is in his second or third week..ok forget that, her label mate justin is whooping her ass right now and he is a new kid on the block…smh

  23. ThatAppleJuice November 23, 2009

You know you’re s*** when Susan Boyle is three spots ahead of you on iTunes.

  24. D-enda November 23, 2009

Sam can go f*** himself. I hope chris brown beats your ass.

Anyways, JHO had the worst. I don’t know what was worst, her off 5 seconds from the background track lipsyncing or her big old ass cushioning her fall!

  25. Ashton Parson November 23, 2009

worst of the night? sam. please. BREAKING NEWS! in order to gain more hits, Sam continually talks about rihanna. Come on, who are you to critique really? Can I see your credentials other than overly biased blogger? When you can go on stage and do half of what any of the performers did.. please feel free to speak your mind.

  26. wtf November 23, 2009

sorry correction, its not itunes its amazon that is 3.99 but point is when you slash, you are not doing well period..her ass is being slayed by so many right now…anyways lets see what happens at the end of the week..

  27. parisian girl November 23, 2009

i have a bad feeling about this new era!!i hope she won’t flop but i don’t know,i just don’t feel it
    but i LOVE rated-r!!
i agree with sam,i love her but her performance was so embarassing!!her voice was weak!

  28. Mr.727 November 23, 2009

I wish people would open there eyes! This chick is hot to f****** def, yes, but her singing is like a dog licking his nuts! She is pretty that is it, that is all she will ever be is pretty! I feel bad about what happen to her, but to be real, that does not excuse her non sing ass! I watched about one minute of her performance before I went back to watching the Simpsons! 3.99?????????? That is really sad, and show the depth of the music industry! Alicia is going to kill next months sales!

Riri do modeling, it works for cuz singing is not your forte!

  29. Yours Truely November 23, 2009

Sam you and Trent know how to push people buttons to get some hits/comments huh? LOL I’m not mad at ya at all! I think RiRi went TOO FAR w/her image this time around that is what is hurting her sales…… it has nonthing to do w/her muisc IMO b/c that’s never stopped fans from supporting before….its her image

  30. anonymouss November 23, 2009

i feel sorry for rihanna. after all that hype and ppl still dont wanna buy her sorryass album. it wont be long before she’s dropped from her label!

  31. anonymouss November 23, 2009

jay-z will be so sad when his favorite puppet will be dropped!

  32. Sundaie November 23, 2009

Sam you are so on time with this rihanna mess, yes she was the worst last night as well as always, the girl can not sing. Def-jam and jay have a lot riding on her.Jay told her to kick chris until she could not kick anymore, and he would reward her by making her a star.this is only phase 1.the best is yet to come. what’s up with 3.99 .

  33. Mr.727 November 23, 2009

I have totally lost hope about humanity in general! I know there is people out there that care for their fellow man, but I also understand that we can’t save the whole world! I feel that black people, in the music industry especially have totally let our music, our image , or essence of who we are, be exploited for profit, but the s*** been going on for years.. Now in this decade R&B music has been drained of it strength, it’s pride, it vision! I remember back in the day, when you didn’t have to be 2 pounds to sing, you didn’t have to me a supermodel to have a record deal! Talent was really was the object, but now it is your body, or your car, or whatever is materialistic! I see it like this if these celebrities want our money, then they really need to start making music that is worth my dollar. I don’t know about anyone else, but I really just don’t feel the music anymore, an I’m only 26! I have to be 100% about this, but I’m starting to listen to more white artist cuz pop music has really killed the R&B game! After watching the AMA’S LAST NIGHT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY HAS A LOT OF PEOPLE FOOLED INTO BELIEVING THAT BEAUTY IS A REPLACEMENT OF TRUE MUSIAL “Vocal” ability! If disco was axed out, so can this s h i t, called pop!

  34. Lola November 23, 2009

    @ Golden J

FACT: Beyonce’s Dangerous in Love was on sale for $5 on iTunes earlier this year.

I have supported all of Rih’s previous albums, but I’m just not feeling this one. I knew Gaga would present some competition though. Good luck to her.

  35. Lola November 23, 2009

I agree with Your Truely….I am not feeling her oversexed image this time around either. Is she selling s** or talent? *goes to listen to GGGB*

  36. Gareth November 23, 2009

OK, now Rihanna’s performance was not that bad! Her tuning wasn’t as off as it has been at times in the past and she looked great. I thought, although not the best performance of the night, it was still decent. I reckon Rihanna will sell OK. You can’t be too critical of the business side of things to push product, every artist does it in some form or other so I wouldn’t slam Rihanna for it as if she’s the only one!

  37. Ali November 23, 2009

Lets just cut to the chase- without a Stylist and a few “edgy” haircuts Rihanna would NOT be someone people “stan” for! Strip her of the fashion and people wouldn’t be kidding themselves in believing she’s sooo talented! Vocally mediocre, stiffer than a teenage c*ck and her performances are ALWAYS awful/mediocre! PROPS AND PR she’s PUPPET!

  38. Jay November 23, 2009

Lol Sam has done it again. Lolllllll

  39. Kirk November 23, 2009

I’m pretty sure Susan Boyle is going to debut at #1, or at least higher than Rihanna. It’s gonna be between Gaga and Boyle; two talented women.

  40. Jweezy November 23, 2009

Rihanna dont f****** do ANYTHING so why the f*** wouldnt she sing live. When your dancing your ass off that’s a different story….SMH

  41. Charlie214 November 23, 2009

@Golden J…Beyonce’s Dangerously in Love album was selling for $5 on Itunes in conjunction with the release of her I Am album.

  42. Charlie214 November 23, 2009

@Golden J…Beyonce’s Dangerously in Love album was selling for $5 on Itunes in conjunction with the release of her I Am album. It was more of a cross promotional tactic.

  43. Nicky November 23, 2009

    All yall n****** are ignorant…….

RIHANNA HAS BEEN ON ITUNES PRESALE ORDERS FOR THE PAST 21/2 WEEKS. SHE WAS IN THE TOP 10 HER FIRST DAY OF PRESALES

LADY GAGA WAS JUST MADE AVAILABLE TODAY.

    DO THE F***** MATH.

  44. Annie November 23, 2009

Susan Boyle is eating apart the competition. On retail alone she is predicted to sell 300-450K. So the final numbers will be a lot higher then that between 300-800K. Susan said bye bye to everyone. She is the biggest surprise of them all.

  45. bobs November 23, 2009

Sam, why are you such a JERK? Such intense hatred in that post. Her album is getting amazing reviews, even the NEW YORK TIMES gave is a glowing review. With people like you spewing hatred at her because she isn’t cookie cutter generic trash like the people you praise (see Chris Brown, Amerie, Kelly Rowland) – her label wants people to hear this record because it shows amazing growth vocally and musically.

The haters on here can say what they will – but I had a house full of people watching the AMA’s last night – and their audio mixing was S*** for EVERY performance. The Black Eyed Peas were easily the worst. Jennifer Lopez off sync? Horrid. Carrie Underwood’s s*** performance? Trash. Janet Jackson hobbling across the stage like a zombie? Awful.

If U hate Rihanna so much, don’t post.

  46. D November 23, 2009

jlo was hot. in no way can you compare pon the nontalented forehead to her. maybe rhitard should have lip sang

  47. bobs November 23, 2009

DAMN HATER! – You’re Gonna check her ASS for $1????

ARTISTS SELLING THEIR ALBUMS FOR $5 right now in Amazon Top 10:

JAY-Z, OWL CITY, KELLY CLARKSON, BLACK EYED PEAS,

LADY GAGA selling 2 albums: Monster & the Fame for $9 (4.50 each, 51 cents more than Rihanna….)

Let’s see what ALICIA KEYS does when her album drops. 2 amazing singles, no airplay, bad sales. I see $2.99 coming up.

    Randomness this lame blog.

  48. MT November 23, 2009

NOT ONLY was Beyonce on for 5$ on Itunes, back when B’Day came out, she sold it for 5$ at WAL MART too….

So don’t hate on just Rihanna, even tho i bought & loved GGGB, I’m not buying Rated R.

  49. nerd November 23, 2009

there have been other artist who sold their album very cheap online so blah, and i thought her performance wasn’t that. i mean it wasn’t strongest or best out of all of the performer but it much improve then her earliest show in europe

  50. ThatAppleJuice November 23, 2009

Well, now we know @Nicky is a pathetic racist. Cool.

  51. Pinkpop November 23, 2009

U know, usualy I really try to hate on Rihanna on here, because of all the Beyonce haters, who blame Beyonce because they are RiRi stans… but I won’t hate now. I just say, that, and I really feel as if, this new direction and image doesn’t appeal too many of the old fans. I got GGGB, and I kinda like it, but her new material is a mess. The performance was a mess. The first single is a mess. All this nudity and rated stuff is just a eal mess. Sorry for that, but even she might sell well at first week, long sight, this is gonna flop.

  52. Pinkpop November 23, 2009

ps: Sam, I love your posts… wouldn’t be the same if you started to “like” Ms Fenty. Ans to all folks who blame Sam, why r you still reading this blog, if he is so “mean” ? 😉

  53. MrRihannaFenty November 23, 2009

@Joshzilla, okay, look up your facts. Rihanna wrote 10 songs off her new album. So she is more than just a voice behind songs that someone else pinned. Dont be ignorant.

@Sam, rihanna had an amazing performance. LA Times gave her an A- along with WHitney. They both had the highest ratings of the night. How can Rihanna be on the same level as a LEGEND/ICON? That obviously says something. Rihanna did amazingly well.

“Rated R” is Rihanna’s most amazing album. Sam, your a piece of crap for not even wanting to give it a chance. She wrote majority of the album. Its a masterpiece. It doesn’t even have to be #1. Im pretty sure Rihanna doesnt care if its #1 or not. She just worrying about pleasing her fans, and shes doing so.

  54. Pinkpop November 23, 2009

Germany is out of competition, sometimes we have no taste in music at all 😉

    just kidding

  55. bobs November 23, 2009

@PINKPOP – except for the fact that the album is getting great reviews and has amazing tracks.. See FIREBOMB, ROCK STAR, PHOTOGRAPHS. She is gonna have some pure fire with the album as far as singles go. I have to agree, the nudity has me perplexed. I would have preferred to see this era be s***, dark – but not n***. Also, I like about 1/3 of GGGB, and didn’t like her previous albums at all. So I think she will loose fans who want “Little Miss Sunshine” and gain new ones who like the edgier, darker, more mature sound. If she can bring these two sides together for her next album, or a re-release it will be hot.

But to the haters, chill the hell out – she’s trying something new. If you don’t like it, OK. She’s not putting out the same old schlock (see Whitney, Mariah, etc..) I think GaGa and Rihanna are bringing their A-Game right now. They both have no problem taking risks.

But this post is DAMN LAME. for $1? When everyone else is selling their albums for $5 – and not hating on them too. Puh-LEEEZE. This blog is getting pathetic.

  56. ThatAppleJuice November 23, 2009

@BOBS, shut the f*** up. Reviews from critics don’t mean s***. No one listens to them. Reviewers based New Moon, but it still broke records. The album sucks. Get over it.

If this blog is SO pathetic, leave. No one is stopping you.

Beyonce stans HEW?! I think RiCycle stans have OFFICIALLY taken their place in idiotic standom. Congratulations.

  57. ThatAppleJuice November 23, 2009

    EDIT: bashed, not based.

  58. rightround November 23, 2009

that’s the same method that Chrissette Michelle’s team used to get her to #1 over Ciara’s album. i personally think it’s cheap and pathetic. This chick needs to flop so her stans can calm down and she can stop thinking she’s all that because she’s not. she’s TALENTELESS!

  59. bobs November 23, 2009

@THATAPPLEJUICE LOL!!! So you are saying that because a bunch of horny teenaged tweens made Twilight #1, it is a good movie? If so, you are as DUMB AS A ROCK.

So according to APPLEJUICE the BEST “ARTISTS “of the year in the US are:

    Mylie Cyrus
    and the Soundtrack of GLEE.
Let’s go ahead and say BARBIE is the artist of the year, too!!

That is the dumbest retort I’ve ever read in my life. Even your screen name suggests your are dumb. (uhh. replace grape with apples)

    Idiot.

  60. Ps November 23, 2009

people are just haters…lol.. people just enjoy spreading hate and forget that wat u put out in life is what u get out…ur really easy targets 4 the devil, riri is gon be number one come next week!

  61. Chukwudi November 23, 2009

Sam in order to have a website you must not be bias against things that you post. You are always hating on Rihanna. Give props where props are DUE. Rihanna is the s***, shes edgy, and has found her self in this game. Like it or not

  62. Chukwudi November 23, 2009

Further more in the Stores Rihannas album is 9.98 which is where a lot of people still get their albums and not online

  63. Jennifer November 23, 2009

Ehh how can ppl defenr Rihannas s***** performance? Biggest s*** ever… MY GOD, girl can not sing…
    SO BAD.

  64. ThatAppleJuice November 23, 2009

And I hope you realizes that there are other juices in the world other than Grape… dip.

  65. bobs November 23, 2009

    @THATAPPLEJUICE

You’ve been checked, you’re an idiot. Go see another screening of Twilight then eat a Big Mac.

  66. C November 23, 2009

@CHUKWUDI who the hell buys music at the store, its all about online downloads. Rihanna’s new album is alright, plays well in the car, I wish Rihanna would step her game up some more! I love me so Ri-ri but with this promo she raised the bar up high! I liked yesterdays performance it wasn’t the best, I feel she needed to bring out yeezy, jeezy and jay! She looked amazing though and her voice is getting better great job. I’m sure I heard some hill billy mess that was worse than riri. 🙂 In this economy we need more £1.79/3.99 albums. Gaga was better! I dunno what to make of j-lo falling before she even put on the heels, but mama kept it moving.

  67. SG November 23, 2009

    Sam and Trent

    fledgling music analysts?

    Barely.

    Chart analysts?

    Nowhere close.

iTunes is a decent barometer for album sales, but it is not the total pie — and contrary to popular belief, digital sales NEVER make up the majority of an album’s sales, even in today’s cyber-driven market. That being said, Amazon’s special is a promo they run each week and furthermore, it is a one-day thing.

Lady Gaga will sell more than Rihanna in her first week, backed by a monstrous hit single, but Rihanna will pull in at a decent #2. She has the R&B/Hip-Hop side appeal that will sell records and furthermore, her fanbase well exceeds that of Susan Boyle, Adam Lambert, and any of the other dozen artists on the list.

Rihanna has never been the sales brethren that has been Beyonce. Instead, rather, she pulls #1 singles out of the bag, and judging from the reviews of her new album (and her single Hard making serious headway on the Digital and Radio cirucits), there doesn’t seem to be anyone stopping her just yet.

Before you, Sam and Trent, call victory and run to Twitter complaining that the so-called “Rihanna stans” should be silenced, I suggest you take a look at the FACTS before posting this bull. You guys have no insight into the chart world and never will. It’s such a shame that this site garners millions of views and the two people behind it have demonstrated their maturity level is that of a journalism-student in high school.

  69. Nicky November 23, 2009

NOT ONLY THAT , LOOK AT THE DAMN REVIEWS!!!! WHO GETS almost 80/100 ON FIRST DAY, AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon its release, Rated R received generally positive reviews from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 79/100 from Metacritic.[50] Entertainment Weekly writer Leah Greenblatt gave the album a B rating and called it “a raw, often unsettling portrait of an artist who is, she insists, no longer a Girl at all”.[8] Chicago Tribune writer Greg Kot gave it 3½ out of 4 stars and called it “powerful and moving art”.[7] Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times commended Rihanna for her maturity on Rated R and called it her “best, most layered and most heartfelt effort”, giving it 3 out of 4 stars.[6] The Times writer Ed Potton shared a similar sentiment and gave it 4 out of 5 stars, describing it as “By turns syrupy and strident, part lament, part tooled-up revenge fantasy, this is the best record Rihanna has made”.[51] Los Angeles Times writer Ann Powers praised Rihanna’s performance and gave the album 4 out of 4 stars, calling it “a complex and fascinating portrait of a young woman’s emotional process after enduring abuse”.[10]

Despite commending Rihanna for her vocals, The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis gave the album 3 out of 5 stars and perceived its lyrical allusions to her relationship with Chris Brown as a weakness, stating “You can see why Rihanna has chosen to litter her album with apparent allusions to the assault: as people are going to read references into the album regardless, you may as well throw them a bone. But there’s more to her than the public’s prurient interest in her private life. That you can’t tell that more often from Rated R is the album’s big flaw”.[9] The Washington Post’s Chris Richards wrote that it “bristles with a formless rage” and viewed Rihanna’s performance as impersonal, stating “She dispatches soulful vocal runs with antiseptic precision, making it hard to discern if she’s truly seething or just pantomiming ire. Is she grappling with demons? Or projecting the image of a singer grappling with demons?”.[14] However, Jon Pareles of The New York Times called Rated R “both brave and skillful” and praised Rihanna for her determination and musicianship.[11] Eric Henderson of Slant Magazine called it “100-percent grit and grind” and compared it to Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope, perceiving that both albums have a similar confessional nature and “radiate an unmistakably, nakedly autobiographical vibe”.[13] Giving it 4 out of 5 stars, Rolling Stone’s Jody Rosen wrote favorably of the album’s grim theme and called Rated R “one of the best pop records of the year”.[12]

  73. Dawon November 23, 2009

NONE OF BEYONCE’S ALBUMS HAVE EVER SOLD FOR $5.00 THE WEEK IT CAME OUT SO WHOEVER SAID THAT IS STRAIGHT UP LYING!!!!

  74. stx November 23, 2009

as lots of people correctly stated before, this is just an amazon promotion, and it was for the mps dowloaded version, not her hardcopy album., which is currently selling for the full price at stores.

  75. oh no she didn’t November 23, 2009

Rihanna is sitting on her ass saying you my dumbies fans you better go out there and make my ablum #1. Without a doubt she will land at #1 because her label and jay-z will see to it, they will be buying up her ablum to make it happen. Her dumb ass fans won’t even care how bad she sounds. She will have enough pity sales to land her that #1 spot. Look at all the stops her label is pulling now, $1-$3.99 first day sales? If by chance she does flop, her label will not drop her, she’s still their top w**** artist.

  76. The Truth November 23, 2009

I agree 100% Sam!!! Lady GaGa will slay the charts of course!!!! I don’t support GIMMICKS

  77. Ownage November 24, 2009

Susan Boyle is going to serve that ass real nice lol. I predict Rihanna 150-200k Gaga 250-300k and Susan Boyle 400-700k

  78. ASDF November 24, 2009

I agree on some of the points here:
    1. Rihanna’s performance last night was very off key, maybe not the worst.

2.Rihanna is NOT RnB by any means, she is strictly POP.

3.There is NO RnB music today, due to labels and artist’s greed to go after mainstreams’ money.
Berry Gordy’s Motown sound will forever be a legacy because he did not sell out RnB. He actually had great sounding artist so mainstream had to take note. Sorry but Rihanna is not a strong vocalist, nor a soulful one. She has great song writers and she’s mainstream’s size 2 to fit in a video. Sad but true for today’s music industry.

4.Def Jam is the most unscroupulous record label there is. They will do anything for a profit. They have bankrupted GREAT vocal talents such as Toni Braxton. So yes they are definitely using Rihanna as a pawn. And I agree that Jay-z and Def Jam brain washed Rihanna to demonize Chris at the price of super stardom.RIhanna was just as violent as CHris that night, and that’s a documented fact. She was just not as strong. No way to set a standard for young women to follow. Yet she got on TV and cried about Chris beating her after she attacked him and wouldn’t get out his car. They should have both been in counseling.

5.And I think Rihanna is medicated up from the guilt of selling her soul for fame.

6.If other artist have dropped their sales to 3.99, then I see this only as a marketing ploy. Her record label can book her as a top selling artist and get her to be a headliner for concert tours here in the states. She has never been able to headline a tour in the U.S., only abroad. And I understand that, she’s lacking in the charisma to captivate an audience with her vocals nor with her her dancing or personality. So people here can demand their money’s worth when they pay for a live concert. Whereas for people overseas, an American top selling artist is a novely.

7.I’m not a pop music fan, but I do realize that Rated R had strong writers and since she’s a stuido artist only, her voice comes across very well with all the automated enhancements.

  79. Dawn November 24, 2009

Adam Lambert’s CD also on sale for $3.99. This price is for downloaded album only, not CD.

  80. R****** November 24, 2009

FACT: BEYONCE’S DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE WAS SOLD FOR $5 ON US iTunes after 5 years of release and that was for promo of her upcoming album… And still more than a mere $3.99. Rated R ain’t even worth 0.99… 🙂

Plus Susan Boyle is expected to sell 500k+ in US which mean poor Rihanna will NOT DEBUT @ #1 after all that hype and controversy that she used to sell her album. I hope Lady Gaga outsells her also as her album is much better and creative…

  81. REALTALK November 24, 2009

I’m not the the biggest Rhianna fan, but no one can deny this album is much more weaker then GGGB! I think she has taken the image too far, maybe its her most personal album, BUT it SACKS! RR or the other tracks weren’t sure fire hits! Which you need to boost 1st week sales. Plus Rhianna fans are on an album to album basis there not consistent. I work in the industry and can tell you, they have spend s*** loads on getting this album away and think they should be scared…because let’s not forget all the promo money has to be paid back before Rhianna makes money, but I guess she has her other endorsements to keep her somewhat satified. But then again no sales = no endorsements.

Album price fixing happens all the time (it’s a marketing stratgey), but usually not the first week of sales! Amazon would have to ask permission from the record company before dropping the price so low or to include it in the promotion, though it seems like a strategy to boost numbers for first week sales.

The bottomline is you can’t play the public/comsumer and shove an album down their throat and think they will always pay for it/go for it, but has a marketer u hope they do! Lady GaGa is talented she brings the catchy hits even if u ain’t feeling her visually u can’t deny the girl got HITS. SuBo is on her first album and riding the 1st album/TV hype and she can sing, but will she be able to do it twice in a row? I think Rhianna production has let her down the most, because if the album was actually good, peeps would actually over look all the image, perfomances & personal BS and buy the album. This just rings true to the saying “Your as big as your last record”, the industry is a VERY fickly place, ESPECIALLY in this download climate. Anyway if she gets dropped and loses Def Jam pure money (Which I’m sure she will) her breddren Jay will just snap her up and sign her to ‘Rocnation’, so she is GOOD anyway. P.s Subu is smashing GaGa and RiRi in the UK mid-weeks, its NOT even funny lol. Plus GaGa is also way ahead of RiRi by a large number. Things ain’t looking good for ‘Rated R’.

  82. Darrius November 24, 2009

Well Digital sales don;t go towards the billboard album count only physical copies. So it really doesn’t matter if they are selling it digitally for 3.99 it wont do anything . It seems like you guys just honestly don’t like Rihanna. HATERS she will sell great

  83. What happened to GOOD music? November 25, 2009
