I don’t know about ‘great’, but she sounded ‘good’ considereing it was her! For the first time in like……EVER….she actually gave a good vocal performance. Lol! She obviously took some vocal lessons before this performance. Like Trent said, she probably didn’t smoke before this performance.

Notice how the camera does a far away shot of her when she hits the highest and longest notes of the song. y is that? because she is not singing live, they wont do a close up on her face to show her singing. they did the same thing at the country music awards.
come to think of it, watching the video again, during most of the song the camera is filming far away shots of her, and you can barely see her mouth through out the performance.

The microphone was really close to her mouth, so maybe she was lipsynching… it doesn’t really matter anyway, I mean it was good for Rihanna, but it wasn’t great.
She sounded good, I can give her that.
But the song, is just another “Take a bow” or “Rehab”, the scale is very very low and she doesn’t have to belt notes. Those songs are safe. ABC singing.
But on another note , I loved the dress.
I love this song and she sounded good, in my opinion.

I was waiting for TGJ to say something shady about Rih but they can’t deny her unique, yet beautiful, vocal ability. I’m never going to say that Rihanna is a powerhouse singer but I don’t even enjoy listening to those types of artists often. She sounded exceptionally well + I enjoy 90% of Rihanna’s music.

So, because of the way the performance was shot, it wasn’t live, and she was lip synching at CMA’s and at Idol? This is a clip of the performance and only the performance. It doesn’t even show how Anita Baker introduced her beforehand, nor does it show the Seacrest interview aftwards, and the houselights were dimmed during her set. So, of course you don’t see the audience, just the heads of the AI judges at their table. Even if I were to entertain your theory, you’d have to come harder than this to support your claim, especially when I can just do a news search on analysis of the performance and come up with articles like this . . .

She sounded really good, she wasn’t great. She was good, she still has pitch and control issues, which she needs to get help with, but she still sounded better than usual. Good job Rihanna. I’m a die hard Ciara stan and I said she did a good job, so haters, she really did do a good job.

this was a good performance. but Um does anybody realize that the reason she sounded so good is b/c she stayed very still and moved very slowly thru out the performance. her flaw along with most singers is that she cant dance , or move too fast or aggresively while singing b/c she wont keep her pitch and will just sound a mess. everytime she stays still her voice sounds much better. her voice is much suited towards ballads, but ballads traditionally dont sell as well as club bangers. there are exceptions of course. but club bangers is where it is right now. i dont care if she ever sings good live. as long as she makes good music and keeps making that paper. gotta respect the hustle. fergie and britney still selling like crazy and they have vocal issues so why shouldn’t rihanna .

That middle part…yikes! But the girl needs to sing in this key much more often, it’s the one where she sounds the best. She is not a good singer to me, but this performance wasn’t painful. One of her best, plus she looked great!

I don’t think the performance was pre-recorded, just the vocals. Watch the video darling, they barely do close ups of her face, the majority of this performance is shot from far away, you can’t see her face very well, who does that? I mean I know cameras take shots from various angels, but how are they going to film her from far away when she is belting out the highest and longest notes (and hardest notes from the song)? Isn’t that when the camera should have filmed a close up?. Even When they do closer shots the mic is so close to her face you can’t see her mouth either.
I’m not sold on this performance. When I see her perform this while the camera is on her at all times (something like mtv unplugged where the set is intimate and you can’t hide a thing) where I can clearly see her face then she will get props and respect from me.

Compared to the key of ‘Only Girl’ or ‘Russian Roulette’, the b**** sounds heavenly in this key! I like this shade of red on her, the darker, the better. I enjoy her voice in Disturbia, because it’s deeper. Someone like her, who I think has very limited vocal abilities ,can still sound “good” in a very specific key, like this one. Now, granted anyone can sound good in the right key, I’m not hopping up and down with excitement about this performance, but I think it worked for her.

this performance WAS good. for rihanna, but let me please point out people that the majority of the hardest and highest notes, were in fact pre recorded, you can hear (if you listen VERY closely) where the pre recorded track stops and the mic comes back on. and she continues.. Also ever notice why the long belts sound great while the verses and ad-libs are very shaky – another indication of parts being pre – recorded!
