Theres no point comparing sales as there in completely different eras. A good selling album in the 1980s would sell 30-50m where as now albums sales are crippled by the new technology and illegal downloading. A good selling album in todays world is 4-8m and very few artist surpass that now.

Dare I say it? Yes, I think it’s epic..arguably better than B’Day. Party is everything, Countdown is simply majestic. Horns, horns, and more horns. Her flow is sickening on that track and the harmonies are a god sent. And she tore down each and every ballad. Battled with the guitar and won, lyrics are mature. I Miss You will make you remember everything love that got away. And RTW actually sounds good when you listen to it after everything.

Well, there are only two up-tempos on the album. The majority are mid-tempos, but she does way more with those. But, as soon as Countdown starts you hear those trumpets. Oh, god. Those trumpets and her voice on the chorus is just breathtaking. I think it’s my favorite song of hers, I can’t stop playing it.

I think you need to put it into perspective. Beyonce has been on top for a LONG time!
People are used to seeing her #1 or at least top 3.
So anything less than that will be considered a FLOP. So people are just happy that Beyonce is doing SO badly. But actually her current chart positions arent that different from people like Kanye or LIl Wayne for example but nobody would call THEM flops.

you can’t compare lil Wayne and kanyes charting to beyonces. they can’t sell concerts or albums like her, and their rappers. Rappers hav never charted as well as pop stars.
a flop is a flop. Madonna has been around for over 25 years when 4 minutes peaked in the top 5. but because she’s long past her prime this is a huge achievement. just because beyonce has been out for a long time doesn’t mean those songs aren’t failures.

Great posts@Haiku but they won’t admit to this. As a fan, I am happy with where her career has gone and I agree, she is very brave doing what she did with 4. It’s an awesome album, but I will be surprised if it has MASSIVE commercial success this time around and I am fine with that.
In fact, it seems to me that Bey is trying to transition to the point where she don’t need massive hits and that she want put out “performance” type songs where when she puts out an album, she can tour off that as well as her past legacy(DC included). Not being too worried about how the album does commercially. Which is why Oxygen and Glastonbury is actually very important in her career because this could take her to the place where I believe she wants to go in terms of her brand.
She has nothing to worry about because she is a partner with her label and has her own label. She can do this kind of stuff without worrying about whatever backlash that comes her way and she can still be revelant and keep her legacy going. I know the saying goes, that you’re only as great as your next hit , but I never see it that because eventually most of the time, those hits end and then what?
Pop, especially for female entertainers and is a youngin’s game and even though 30 is still young, for a woman especially, let’s say 30 isn’t the new 20. So I am good with what Bey is doing right and every true fan(you know, the ones who are actually a fan of what she does and not so they can use her to provoke stanwars) should be excited for where her career is going. I am here for longevity, and there are various ways of making that happen.
