Drake Dishes On New Aaliyah Album: “Everyone Should Be Excited”

Published: Wednesday 8th Aug 2012 by Sam

Much ado has been made about Drake‘s new “collaboration” with the late, great Aaliyah, ‘Enough Said’, as well as the news that the cut is set to feature on a Drizzy produced posthumous LP.

And while debate will no doubt rage on, the Young Money staple has broken his silence on the matter, talking to MuchMusic about the track and the now-confirmed – album.

See what the rapper, real name Aubrey Graham, had to say after the jump…

Echoing earlier sentiments, it’s hard to be “excited” for any such project given the way the releases of other departed acts have been handled (see: Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, and the like). There’s also the fact that many unreleased tracks and demos are often “unreleased” for a reason. That said, if the team ultimately rebooting Aaliyah’s “career” defy the lofty odds to deliver a compelling product, we’ll readily bake and tuck into that humble pie.

Over to you Drizzy, Noah and co…

Your thoughts?

I’m a bit conflicted about this album. I think that if it can be done in a tasteful way then we should be able to hear her unreleased vocals. Aaliyah was an amazing artist who loved her fans and I for one would love to hear her voice set to a contemporary and modern beat. On the other hand her immediate family has made it clear that they don’t want anything Aaliyah related to be released to the public and that should be respected to a degree as well. But at the end of the day they have so many amazing opportunities to keep her legacy alive and I think that they would benefit from exploring those options. Starting with the much rumored movie on her life that has yet to come to fruition. I’ll be checking for the album.

    • Raheem August 8, 2012

The Haughton family have just come out of their silence to say that they were happy for Drake to do this album, they felt that he was the best one to release it. He also gained permission from her uncle Barry who owns her material via Blackground so the family and her label are behind it. In addition to that, Timbaland has said he is also part of the album with Missy Elliott, two of their songs are expected to make the album. There is also news just out that Blackground are trying to get Aaliyah’s idol Janet Jackson on the album

      • Marcos O’liva August 8, 2012

im excited for it as long as he does her justice. she is a highly respected and loved person and artist. as a fan i would love to hear it. i feel she would want us to hear all her work. im excited to hear her smooth melodic voice back on a track.

      • Honestly Speaking August 8, 2012

That is amazing news! and her album sounds as though it’s already shaping up to be one of the best album releases to come out of the music industry in a while lol. A duet between Janet and Aaliyah would be amazing, especially since they have similar voices.

    • Mobwife August 8, 2012

Have you heard that damn track? It sounds like crap! I said it before and will repeated it now, Timberland & Missy Ellliot CREATED A SOUND that perffectly matched Aalyiah’s vocal range and ability. They didn’t just throw her vocals on top of any old crazy beat.

Wait, I swear her family said they disapproved of the release of any new music so what is he talking about?

  2. That B*tch (would you like a rihfund with that)? August 8, 2012

Didn’t her family say they didn’t want him making an Aaliyah album? That’s very disrespectful to her family’s wishes. I like Drake and all but he needs to have a seat and get some help for this obsession.

    • Nik August 8, 2012

I know right! I saw a video of him talking about Aaliyah and he looked at the camera as if he was talking to her, it looked like he wanted to lick his lips. Very Disturbing.

      • That B*tch (would you like a rihfund with that)? August 8, 2012

He’s just another crazed fan, I don’t understand why he doesn’t see that this obsession is a bad look for him.

  3. yuppitsme69 August 8, 2012

i swore the family said no but hey i love aaliyah and i would love to hear new music but drake needs to be more respectful of her familys wishes cuz she didnt play wit her family and morals

  4. KingBey August 8, 2012

He Needs To Get His Ass On Somewhere, And worry about his own s***.
Leave Aaliyah’s unreleased vocals to Timbaland and Missy. And Didn’t her family say they didn’t support this? HMMM….

  5. messymel August 8, 2012

I cannot stand this dude anymore. Who is he Drake to Aaliyah other than a psycho fan? Why not concentrate on his own career and not try to reshape a deceased person’s legacy? The arrogance astounds me.

Drake has his head up so far up his ass he can’t hear a thing around him. You can tell he’s in a “bubble” surrounded by yes men otherwise his approach would be totally different.

    • Nik August 8, 2012

How did he even get in the running to be in charge of producing her unreleased tracks?

  6. James227 August 8, 2012

I will not purchase nothing from Drake nor this album or song of Aaliyah. He can go to hell wtih the b*******

    • Mobwife August 8, 2012

      THIS RIGHT HERE! 🙂

  7. coco August 8, 2012

Drake needs not to make an album in Aaliyah’s name. With all due respect! He’s really annoying me now! and Pissing me off.

Where’s DMX when you need him? DMX come shake this n-gga up yo!! And Drake STFU ain’t nobody gotta hear what you have to say.

Aug 25th will mark 11 years since Aaliyah Dana Haughton died. RIP Princess.

  8. Mr Bradshaw August 8, 2012

I like drake. I like Aaliyah. I dont like them together.

That song he released recently I loved but I felt he ruined the vibe of the song.

Last thing I read was the family was not here for it. As much as I would like to hear new stuff I rather her legacy not be messed with.

This needs to be done right. Or not at all

  9. monstarebel August 8, 2012

I feel like Drake is just trying to gain something from this he wants all this attention on him

  10. Aaliyah is Queen B**** August 8, 2012

Can this B**** just leave her memory alone already? The family already said that they don’t support any new album. He is being so disrespectful and I’m sure Aaliyah would not appreciate that.

    • Stop making money of the dead! August 8, 2012

And the b**** boy is lying about Aaliyah’s family are up for him doing it and he used Aaliyah song to diss Chris Brown how f****** rude.
The album will be full of guest artist like Him, Nicki & Lil Wayne people whi didnt even know her F*** that s***.

  11. MJ Lover August 8, 2012

    Just leave it be, Aubrey.

    • MJ Lover August 8, 2012

I mean let it be lol fail… just like that new Drake song.

  12. christinastherealtalent August 8, 2012

The first comment was my sentiments exactly but the fact that Drake used an unreleased Aaliyah to does Chris Brown is beyond insulting and very disrespectful to aaliyahs legacy and her loved ones.

  13. celebfanboy10 August 8, 2012

I am an aaliyah fan but I won’t support this album. Drake & Noah didn’t even know her so what gives them the right to “create” an album they “think” does her justice. I’m sure Tim & Missy would have put together an album years ago if they thought it was something she would have wanted for her fans. I understand he is obsessed with her but I highly doubt her family & label said to them “if there is anyone out there that can do it, it would be him & 40” …yeah right! Her brother just said the family does NOT support it…

  14. El Santo August 8, 2012

When I’ll see his ass f***** up, then I’ll be happy and exited.
    Loser.

  15. imusicjunkie August 8, 2012

Aaliyahs music is classic. He is doing nothing but messing with her s***. I’m not here for 40s tired ass reused beats!

  16. El Santo August 8, 2012

STOP MOVIN’ LIKE A GANGSTA… YOU ARE JUST A B****.

  17. celebfanboy10 August 8, 2012

Aaliyah is not here to put her creative input into this album so please just leave her legacy alone! She was very much involved in her career & since she is not alive to be apart of it now, Drake & Noah need to just leave it alone.

    • Vegas Girl August 8, 2012

      That’s what I was thinking.

  18. MISHKA August 8, 2012

DMX needs to get in there.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

      B****

      • MISHKA August 9, 2012

        Troll

  19. Mobwife August 8, 2012

Drake’s “Eddie Monster” looking a** needs to sit all the way down! Who the hell is 40? If 40 isn’t a code word for Timbo, Missy, Ginuwine, DMX & Aalyiah’s family, he needs to shut up before some decides to pull a “Drake-Evelyn” on him and start throwing bottles at his dumba**!

    • Full Moon August 8, 2012

I don’t know why your comment made me laugh so hard 😆

  20. Army Of Queen SLAYLIYAH August 8, 2012

As Much As I Want To Abide By Aaliyah’s Family’s Wishes I Cannot Let This Project FLOP , I Have To Support It So The Queen May Have A Chance To Snatch Wigs From The Grave

    • Viciousss August 9, 2012

So you’d rather support the financial side of her music than the integrity and soul of it. Clearly the message of her music was lost on you.

      • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

        Preach!

      • coco August 9, 2012

        PREAAAAAACH!

  21. Gilberto August 8, 2012

“Everyone Should Be Excited”, but no one is. NEXT!

  22. The King August 8, 2012

This s*** is pissing me off more than I ever thought it would. I pretty much agree with what everybody else is saying. Personally, I don’t think anybody should be releasing new Aaliyah music…not Timbaland, not Missy, and damn sure not Drake. Aaliyah’s music just needs to be left alone and we’ll be able to cherish what music SHE gave to us. Drake did not know Aaliyah personally, so he has no idea what she would have wanted her music to sound like. I’m finished with his f***** ass. F*** him and ALL of Young Money. And R.I.P. to the Princess of R&B.

  23. Bam Bam August 9, 2012

I don’t know why but every time I see this dude I feel like singing “Miss Celie’s Blues” (but I digress)….Aaliyah’s brother said that the family is not supporting the album and that is all that matters to me………”sistah you been on my mind”……

  24. Matty August 9, 2012

F*** OFF DRAKE, YOU SUCK AND AALIYAH RULES! leave her alone!

  25. chronic bills August 9, 2012

so wait a minute yall saying her fam not for it and dhes doing it anyway? WTF.

It don’t look like aaliyah fans for it either. Drake might wanna rethink this one. Save ya stripper anthems, moaning, and wanna be g lyrics for another artist.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

Trust that this is illuminati s*** that b**** doing

  26. Viciousss August 9, 2012

    Repulsive.

I will NEVER support any music stolen from a dead person without their consent or support to be used to line SOMEONE ELSE’S pockets.

And any person who CLAIMS they’re a fan and supports this b******* is just another thirsty selfish asshole like Drake who only gives a damn about their desires and not the woman lying in the coffin.

Drake can eat a d*** and let all these sick stans kneel behind him in line.

Disgusting. Aaliyah would be horrified to see her music being used in pawn games.

    F****** makes me sick.

  27. tbozfan10 August 9, 2012

As much as I like Drake or his music, this is incredibly strange if not downright creepy for him to do this. Her own family doesn’t support this. And she obviously has no say in how these tracks or produced nor do the people who were closest to her. Drake never knew her, so why the fck does he think he has the right to produce an album from her unused material and cash in on it. This whole thing reaks of either a way to cash in on her name and untimely death or just a creepy obsession by an over-the-top fan.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

      Illuminati s*** goin on

  28. commanderofthedancefloor August 9, 2012

Ok how many people felt drake ruined enough said? lol if you take him out that song would be great, just add in an electro piano solo or guitar and it would be great.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

      Cosign!

  29. truth tea August 9, 2012

aaliyahs vocals werent all that anyway. i just find this a cheap way to gain money sympathy because they know that the public loves any dead celebrity. people are saying “aaliyah wouldnt want this” etc she never even wrote her own songs! i like the girl but im just being honest.

    • Stephen August 9, 2012

Aaliyah’s vocals were all that, she was one of the best vocalists (among her contemporaries) that ever lived…what her voice lacked in power, it more than made up for in range and control. At least she didn’t have to always rely on belting long notes or hitting high notes or doing unnecessary vocal runs in every song to prove that she was a vocalist, unlike the likes of Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson

  30. Army Of Queen SLAYLIYAH August 9, 2012

So You You Rather The Project FLOP OR SLAY ??? oh Ok….

    • Viciousss August 9, 2012

FLOP.so that fool never touches another Aaliyah track in his life.

As for the whole slay thing…stupid beyond words. There’s a reason that lame ass terminology didn’t exist back when we had GOOD music. Who the f*** cares about slaying when you’re in heaven.

      • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

        READ B****!! COSIGN CHILE!

  31. what August 9, 2012

f***. drake and his s*** songs and his s*** producer, aaliyah fans want to hear aaliyah MUSIC not some crazed idiot adding her to the s*** music of today that currently populates the charts! F*** him, I hope he gets talked out of it.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

      ikr

  32. James227 August 9, 2012

F*** Drake and all of them like him. If people go out and buy this s***, then they were not fans of hers but they are fans of Drake who just showed up in the picture. Drake knows nothing about Aaliyah. He’s trying to make a mint off her time of death on the 25th day. Notice they are trying to do the same thing with MJ album called Bad25. These people are making money off the dead and it is down out cold. But then again these people have no souls anyway. If Missy & Timberland are behind they can forget about me supporting them.

When Whitney died people started buying her old albums just like we did Aaliyah’s if you did not have it.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

      I agree

  33. Truth(theREALISTubitch) August 9, 2012

    OmGAAAWD this girl..

  34. Late August 9, 2012

Im a BIG Drake fan, but I feel like he’s coming off way too cocky in this clip.
One thing I’ve always liked about him was his humble nature…I hope his success isn’t starting to get to his head.

  35. muzik_lover August 9, 2012

I am a BIG Aaliyah fan! She is my favorite artist…her music was groundbreaking & reached so many audiences during its release. Her last self-titled studio LP was by far her best in terms of being current yet staying true to who she was as an artist. That album was a work of art & is still relevant in comparison to music played on the radio now.

I am not a supporter of this project! Aaliyah sounded amazing on the “Enough Said” track but she has always had amazing vocals so I’m not surprised. Yet the fact that her vocals are over some recycled track disturb me. Her memory is to be cherished not exploited just because you are a SUPER FAN (Drake) and want the entire world to know. Let her legacy live on through the great artistic pieces she has already blessed us with.

I am not for tainting her image. If there is a posthumous LP (ie I Care 4 U) then I would only want to see the people who knew her like Tim, Missy, Sean Garrett, Tank, Ginuwine, Blackground & Co. involved to due her justice.

  36. coco August 9, 2012

    (yes I’ve commented before)

this is seriously breaking my heart. drake is so inconsiderate and is doing it all in his name… all for HIS sake.. f****** asshole. why touch the work of someone that’s no longer with us – he’s clearly doing it for HIS POCKET and not HER LEGACY!

    RIP Princess <3

  37. Horseshoe60 August 9, 2012

I hope and pray that Aaliyah’s fans don’t buy this album. I want it to flop and flop hard. What is this a new trend now putting music out from dead artists?. This crap should be boycotted when it’s released. We need to really stick together on this one or else these people will be doing this again with some other dead artist.

I’m not a fan of Chris Brown but I like some of his music. If Drake wanted to diss Chris he should have used his own music. Why use a dead person’s song to diss somebody. Just look at that video above, Drake jerking like some drug user. Watch his body movements. SMH

  38. PYTFROMAL August 9, 2012

Wow Drake. I understand he’s a big fan but the family has said that they dont support a new album and/or release of any of Aaliyahs music. He should respect that.

    • muzik_lover August 9, 2012

I totally agree! If you are not adhering to the family’s wishes then you are not doing any great justice to the artist.

  39. TeamBreezy August 9, 2012

i’ll be supporting this album ..

    RIP Aaliyah

  40. Eric August 12, 2012

It would be backwards to make Aaliyah’s voice fit a modern sound, because the bulk of her catalog sounds fresher and more original than most of what’s come out in recent time. I doubt very seriously Aaliyah would want to sound like the stuff on the radio right now.
