Jessie J Covers ELLE / Explains Why She Ditched The “Cartoony” Look

Published: Monday 1st Oct 2012 by Sam

Pop belter Jessie J serves up delicate demure on the cover of ELLE magazine’s November 2012 issue.

The singer’s refined look is world away from the dramatic aesthetic she blazed onto the scene with in 2010. And according to the 24 year old, the change in gear was very deliberate.

Flip the hood for more pics as well as her explanation for the change, soundbites on her sexuality, and more…

J, who recently sacked her stylist and hired Cobbie Yates, told ELLE:

“That really scary, spiky, cartoony kind of thing, that was me two or three years ago. Now, I’m definitely more embracing of myself as a woman and my sexuality and just being a bit more feminine.

I’ve always wanted to look like this, but it didn’t grab people’s attention. And in the beginning you’ve always got to do something that’s going to make people go, “Who’s that?” ‘

Now, I’m definitely growing into fashion. It’s about confidence. Maybe I was a bit scared. I was a bit insecure about my body, about being too grown up. But I was a girl and now I’m a woman and I want to make sure I enjoy it.”

The insightful interview also saw Jessie address her personal life, more specifically her sexuality and the mass interest in it.

“It’s one of those things where they labelled me. Sexuality shouldn’t define anyone. It doesn’t define me. Love should be at the core of what you do. I’m only interested in finding love now.

I definitely want to get married and have kids and it’s just about making sure that the person who I meet and that I do that with is right for me.”

*************

With the industry being at its most image-focal, Jessie’s outlandish look was a sure-fire hook to grab folks’ attention. And while some could argue it risky to ditch it before even releasing a second album (which it would be for your average artist), Jessie J’s talent precedes her. Hence should the “business” side of things be well tended to, there’s no reason she can’t keep “winning” no matter what she looks like. Right?

She actually looks more credible and way less try-hard like this than she did before. If anything her previous look was irritating and distracting. Let’s hope her musical approach has evolved too as aside from the big voice she’s still quite anonymous in terms of what her actual sound is. I do want to like her though because she IS talented so I see this as baby-steps in the right direction and I hope her new music is just as evolved.

    • I’m not throwing shade, but… October 1, 2012

I agree. She came out with do it like a dudes which although was awful and cringe worthy it was different, and then it went all generic. i think she looks good for Elle, but although she’s changed her look she still looks a mess.

      • That B*tch (I can’t with these delusional stans) October 1, 2012

She still looks a mess because she’s extremely ugly. How often do you see ugly successful female singers with the exception of Gaga (who I happen to love)?

      • -_- October 1, 2012

She is not ugly. She isn’t classically pretty, but she is not where near ugly. There is something about her that I find extremely attractive. The sad part is comments like yours get to her as she herself has said she doesn’t think she is very pretty, but she really is. She has great bone structure and beautiful green eyes. There is something about her face that demands attention in a good way. Plus she has a nice ass. It isn’t the biggest, but it is proportional and just really nice.

That cartoony look was “in” then, but it looked stupid even then. What she’s saying is that she needed the attention to get the STUPID public to buy her records, and now she’s over it.

  3. Monstarebel October 1, 2012

Goo girl!! I like this look on her!!

  4. the real xoxo October 1, 2012

she looks much better now. she looked too gaga fame-era before.
looking forward for her second album

record executives are insecure cows in the music industry. when jessie came out. GAGA was the hottest thing and doing her thing. i bliv the cartoon look was a try to create the new Gaga, the same way they tried to create the new beyonce with rihanna, new briteney with jessica simpson and now, new rihanna with rita. over time, artists find themselves and get outta label control. GO JESSIE. nothing new, the industry is always like this

Jessie is looking good on that cover and She’s well on Her way
up the charts and other great places along the way.

  7. wrinkle flop ora October 1, 2012

Jessie J looks like a supermodel and sings like a Diva. She is coming to murder Rita Ora next year. Jessie J has sat back and watch wrinkle flop ora be hyped up like she is Mariah, even though Jessie J debut record sales, talent and looks s*** all over Rita .

Jessie J went gold on pre orders alone, her deluxe album is outselling Rita Ora, who is not even in the top 100 on itunes UK. They always talk about Rita Ora so called Amazing debut…..well, Jessie debut LP has sold 2.5 million.

    • Are You Serious? October 1, 2012

And she is still in the top 50 on the official UK Chart and her album came out almost 20 months ago. Rita won”t be anywhere near the top 100 in 20 months with her s***** album. Jessie might not have had a number 1 album, but she sold a lot more in her first week than 45k like Rita did to get that number 1. Rita was lucky she debuted without any competition.

      • wrinkle flop ora October 1, 2012

actually rita sold 40 in her first week. Jessie has never had number 1 album, but, she was gold on pre orders.

I cannot wait for Jessie J to slay Rita Ora back into a 9 to 5

      • wrinkle flop ora October 1, 2012

rita is only 10 places higher than TALK THAT TALK BY RIH on the UK cHART, by next week, Rita wil crash out of the uk album chart.

  8. FAF October 1, 2012

Good she was copying Nicki too much anyway w/ those chinese bang wigs. She looks good now, though

    • Are You Serious? October 1, 2012

Jessie has had that hair since she was a kid. She was never copying Nicki. Now she is more grown up and can get rid of her childhood hairdo

  9. prettigurlrockD bitchesssss October 1, 2012

I love her. She looks much better now. I wish Sam would post more on her and not those other flop UK artists. Jessie J is underrated! She’s incredible/deserves more CREDIT.

    • bob October 2, 2012

soooo agree sam listen yeah ;o)

  10. MC October 1, 2012

Good move on her part. You rather people take you seriously than think of you as a cartoon character.

  11. GH October 1, 2012

I personally think the new look suits her very well. Not a risky move at all as long as the world has ears. She’s a singer and her voice is the main thing that should matter. The talent she has is RIDICULOUS. Truly looking forward to hearing stuff from the new album. 🙂

  12. kevin October 1, 2012

she looks good. I’m down with this.

  13. Americaniqua October 1, 2012

Is it just me, or does her head really look humongous on the cover?

  14. mr.m October 1, 2012

    Anyway, you’re a flop gurr
    bye!

    • -_- October 2, 2012

lol. a flop that sold 2.5 million albums and 12 million singes from a debut album and whose album is still in the top 50 after 20 months in the charts.

  15. BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare October 2, 2012

I have always LOVED Jessie J’s voice & I’m glad that she ditched the overused gimmick-look at me-get me in the top 10 of the pop charts- personae. She has always been better than that.

However, I’m waiting for the Jessie J album that goes along with her stripped down look. Could be very interesting. I’m DEFINITELY staying tuned.
