‘I wanted to follow in Madonna’s footsteps.’

Words that should be uttered by any Pop belle with half a glass of ambition, the above quote came from none other than Pop Empress Beyonce last night, shared with her fans during the screening of her visual album in NYC.

Joining fans to celebrate the album’s release in the city, the ‘Tell Me‘ performer answered a number of questions via the photo-sharing platform Instagram, doing so at the ‘School of Visual Arts.’

On the release, she shared:

“I’m very private and I’m very respectful, and I think it just took me no longer being someone’s child once I became a mother, I felt like I could tear those fourth walls and I just felt like it was time.I completely feel liberated.”

“I felt like I wanted follow in the footsteps of Madonna and be a powerhouse and have my own empire. And (to) show other women when you get to this point in your career, you don’t have to go sign with someone else and share your money and your success, you can do it yourself.”

She went on to share:

“Honestly I was at a point where I felt like, you know, everything feels the same … that’s how I felt and if I could not challenge that, then maybe it’s time for me to do something else or develop more artists, which is something I want to do.I just hope that I continue to move forward and challenge myself, and I think now that I’ve become a mother, I just want my legacy to inspire people.”

“I took all of my insecurities, all of my doubts, all of my fears and everything I’ve learned over the 17 years and I applied it into this project. But more than the music — I’m proud of myself as a woman … the biggest message is owning your imperfections and all the things that make you interesting, because I refuse to allow someone to put me in anyone’s box.”

She inspires me to be a better person in this world. She will get there.

We all know that Madonna can’t sing to save a life, same goes for t********* (that’s why she was lip syncing for the president). Talentless frauds of a feather I guess, match made in heaven

That was so moving, congrats Bey for thinking different and taking the leap,it inspires me to be a risk taker and not a conformist. She is great!

  4. cake like lady gaga December 22, 2013

Madonna set a world record last year when MDNA had the highest sales drop in its second week (a whopping 89%).. T*********’s third and forth week sales will match those of her inspiration.. How cute

I can see right thru this BS. I am studying PR and branding. Beyonce, like all African american singers look up to Diana Ross, Whitney and Tina Turner. Matt Knowles said BEY used to study old tapes of the supreme to learn star quality. BEY HAS ALWAYS BEEN TINA TURNER. Donan summer and diana ross diva. Britney was the only one who was linked to madonna.

Rih, being West i9ndian, born overseas, was teh 1st black girl, who did not uses Diana Ross / Tina Turner / Donna summer / Whitney, or even Janet as blue print. Rih ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO MADONNA and wanted to be the version of her. From 2008 onwards, Rih has been compared to mADONNA,even Princess Diana. HER FANS call her the ‘ black madonna’ No black comes close:

Madonna was beaten up Sean Penn – Rih was beaten up by CB

Madonna came to NYC nad had to make it on her own – Rih came to NYC nad had to make it on her own. Beyonce was more like Berry Gordy and Diana Ross.

Madonna was PURE U**** S** – SO is madonna

Madonna pissed the haters – SO DID RIH

Mdonna does all styles of music – so does Rih

Madonna has the best videos – so does Rih

Madonna changes her hair and style – RIH IS THE ONLY BLACK WOMEN, in the last 10 years to do that. She is the only black woman who does not need to rely long blonde / black weave and sparkly gowns.

RIH IS THE ONLY BLACK GIRL COMING CLOSE TO BRE4AKING MADONNA’S records. Madonna started her career at 25; d the math.

Now, all of a sudden, Beyonce is sucking up to madonna; hugging her kids up at concerts ( pr move ) getting madonna to call her queen etc; copying her videos; now giving interviews about how she wants to be the new madonna.

Rih really is the most powerful woman in the game; she done caused beyonce to switch up her idol No more Diana Ross, Donna summer, whitney or Tina Turner.

WELL, we all know RIHANNA IS THE REAL BLACK MADONNA AND SHE HAS THE HITS AND STATS TO BACK IT UP. Rih is gonna be bigger than madonna and bey when she is their old ass age.

    You sound like a fool.

  7. Rihanna black madonna December 22, 2013

THIS FAT BLACK FOOL stays copying Rihanan

She copies her blue print of GGGB AND UNA

SHE COPIES HER FASHION – beyonce was not wearing Balmain, Gareth Pugh, Givency before RIH was. Rih was the 1st black celeb I SAW wearing these DESIGNERS. Even Beyonce copied Rih in wearing Topshop. Beyonce was not wearing toshop in 2000, AND TOPSHOP HAD BEEN AROUND SINCE 1980’S. Rih was the 1st USA celeb to rock, now they all do.

She even went to the UK to groom a white clone of Rih; that WHITE girl who copies Rih’s tweets and instagram pictures and works with all her producers, songwrtiters and even took her rejected tracks.

Then Beyonce even copied Rih ” na na” and song titles ( drunk in love ) EVEN Copying her s*** bad ass image . Beyonce new album has her posing in thong, just like pour it up video. Beyonce is a knock off from UNA blueprint.

Admit BEY, YOUR ROLE MODEL AND IDOL IS RIHANNA. WE ALL CAN SEE IT.

  8. Bey Is Grown December 22, 2013

    We love you Bey

  9. i’m too Sazzy December 22, 2013

I remembered when Rihanna said she wanted to be like the black Madonna and now all of a sudden Beyonce is praising Madonna’s glory. I guess when RiRi comes back out and says Janet Jackson’s name I guess Beyonce is going to do the same thing. Wow stalk much Bey.

  10. Rihanna black madonna December 22, 2013

Madonna and Rih bot ” both cannot sing” but they have sold more albums than beyonce, who is a good singer. POOR DAT.

AND THEY did not need daddy or a girl group to do it. THAT RIHANNA REIGN JUST WONT LET UP.

The monster is still the biggest song on Radio, meaning beyonce X0 does not have chance in displacing it from NUMBER1, meaning RIH still makes history. In fact, it is growing on US radio, so it will be number 1 for the next months. Beyonce buzz is wearing off, hence why the 50$ promo money from pepsi is being used to buy people off alt walmart and flogged instarbucks, they cannot keep it up forever. This LP has to last as long as RIh. RIH still has the upper hand.

  11. h2o December 22, 2013

Such an ambitious, positive, smart, powerful woman.

  12. Rihanna black madonna December 22, 2013

Bey is so jealous of Rih, even though Rih was in NYC, she did not invite her to album release party. WHY? PURE envy, SHE KNOWS rih STAY F****** UP HER . RIH TEH goat SINGER made her step her game up.

CATCH UP HEAUX! RIH WAS IN NYC testing for her new male fragrance line, that IS RIGHT SHE IS SELLING TO DUDES NEXT YEAR. 1ST WOMAN TO DO THAT. Catch up heaux

Even Lebron james called Rih deal with Balmain a KING MOVE – Catch up heaux

2 movies for 2014 – catch up heaux

3 VOGUE COVERS – catch up heaux

Shakira song ( WHICH I HAVE HEARD) being OFFICIALLY launched at a radio event in a big way ) Catch up heaux

SHE. X R8 HER BIGGEST LP SINCE GGGB – catch up heaux

Maybe…????????Maybe a south american leg of DWT? WHICH could take her to 200 – at age 25 catct up heaux. Shakira and her bRAZIL VOGUE COVER WILL OPEN HER UP IN SOUTH AMERICA.

THAT rihanna reign got yo fave acting up.

  13. Rihanna black madonna December 22, 2013

You do not go from Diana Ross and Tina Turner to POP white woman, who could not really sing and uses s** appeal and shock value, creativity and chameleon style, unless YOU STALK RIH.

RIH IS THE LINK. HOW MANY OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN SINGERS were into madonna? NONE. They all SANG in the church and loved them some Aretha, WHIT and Tina etc TEH BLACK DIVA’S. RIH was 1st one who said, “f*** that” I capping for Madonna went a pop Style route. Now, beyonce is Madonna?

Madonna, Tina and Diana have nothing in common. Anyway, Rih is doing Rock like cher and joni mitchell on her new album, so No doubt beyonce will start trying to be Cher, mICK JAGGER type..

And this was t*** ‘ goat singer ‘ from the B’dos, who was meant to be one hit wonder, who copies BEY? F*** OUTTA HERE, BEY IS SCARED OF RIH, that is why she cannot be in teh same room as her unless it is and event. Because Rita Failed getting rid of rih, bey is now trying to BE RIH.

BRING ON 2014……….IT IS ABOUT TO GO DOWN……

  14. Brazilian Yoncé!!! December 22, 2013

  15. Rihanna black madonna December 22, 2013

BEYONCE was there in madonna was in her prime in 1998 and 2000. Yet, I never heard or read her saying anyting about madonna. She never spoke of mUSIC LP OR RAY of light. Look at her videos and songs from 1998 – 2000, there was no madonna influence. She was like most black women in the usa, she grew up on the supreme’s, and the black legends. Black people living overseas tend to listen to more pop.

Her dad told essence magazine that he made DC watch videos of the temptations and teh supremes. There was nothing pop about DC OR BEYONCE. Then Rih gets signed and does a song called unfaithful and SOS . Before that, U never saw black singers making ‘ SOS’ AND Unfaithful songs, black singer, including BEYONCE WERE all working with Darkchild and talking about how men cheat. RIH CAME TO THE USA AND BROKE THAT MOLD.

EVER SINCE then, FOLKS have been trying to copy the blue print ever since. Rih is the only black singer this decade who did not need to work with darkchild to get a hit. She did not need to sing about men cheating on her or up in da club, nor did she need to sing with a rapper to get a hit. ALL black singers before her were stuck doing that. BEYONCE DOES COPY RIH AND IS ENVIOUS cos RIH DONE WAS SHE THOUGH COULD NOT BE DONE: Go AGAINST the AFRICAN AMERICAN blueprint to FAME.

Rih ‘s was paid off: She is more famous than any black american singer; she doen it her way and in a quicker time and she did not need to SANG

Yes at the Navy commenter keeping the HlV+ pressed for the gods, I live 🙂

  17. h2o December 22, 2013

Beyonce’s US album sales are now at more than 31 million sold since 1998. I think the new album could take her to 33 million with a well-handled era.

  18. Brazilian Yoncé!!! December 22, 2013

    Where’s Queen Onika?
The girls can’t take this slayage anymore they’re so pressed they keep writing essays.

The navy is even more mad because they taught Beyoncé was going to flop. Don’t yall worry the GP is in her side.

  19. Arie December 22, 2013

Congrats to Beyonce on her success but let’s be honest, this is a speech one would say after studying Rihanna. What flaws has Beyonce embraced? As far as the Madonna comment that is very sweet of her but we all know that Rihanna is the one using Madonnas career as a blueprint. Beyonce has taken a 180 turn because her career was modeled on the era of Divas and you add Tina Turner in mix

  20. GREEKGOD December 22, 2013

How retarded can you be. Comparing someone’s 4th week sales to someone’s 2nd?

  21. maya December 22, 2013

Delusion at it’s worst. Rihanna is a singles artist. You have to be able to sell albums and have record breaking tours to be more successful than Beyonce and Madonna. And you obviously didn’t listen to the video. She wants to be like Madonna by being successful and owning her own company. Madonna made 125 million this year, so she’s doing something right. Also, I find it strange that rihanna has done 5 tours, released 7 albums, done multiples features, and release multiple singles, but her peer networt worth is so much higher than hers. Even those who came into the industry years after she did, and those who are much younger than she is….strange. So what does that tell you? Earnings and networth show how successful you are at what you do. I guess those single sales ain’t bringing in as much as those album sales.

  22. cass December 22, 2013

i heard beyonce already outsold artflop

  23. RoyalKev December 22, 2013

Madonna’s probably one of the best examples of a fearless woman in the music biz. I’m not a fan of hers, but that woman clearly thinks outside of the box. Although Bey don’t really remind me of her in most ways, that’s definitely what both ladies share in common. I also love that Bey is becoming more of an artistic visual artist (that is Madonna’s greatest strength as an artist). I think she’s admiring some of the best qualities Madonna have that she can apply to her own career. Still all around I think of MJ, Tina/Diana as being a part of Bey’s DNA. I just hope Bey (like Madge) continue to write her own rules, I love that about her!

Can This Hoeanna Stan Read????? THE QUEEN said she wants to follow n her footsteps by owning her own record label, managing artists, and being a certified Boss B****. She’s not talking following her music dumbass. THE QUEEN said that before Hoeianna popped on the scene. So get it straight f**. And R**** will never bey on Madonna’s level, because she’s a puppet with no self direction. That’s all she will have is her single sales. That’s how she broke 100 million records sold. When u got artists with less albums like Britney, Madonna, THE QUEEN all reach that Gold n more album sales than record sales.

  29. RoyalKev December 22, 2013

    @ Rihanna Black Madonna

Rih didn’t initially enter the music industry claiming to look up to Madonna, she said Beyonce was her idol.

Although Bey has given every legend respect from Whitney and Janet to Madonna (who she’s praised bfore), she’s clearly stated that MJ was her FAV.

I don’t get the impression that Bey wants to move MJ over for Madonna. It’s just that if your going to admire any artist for their business acumen, it would be Madge! Simple as that.

  30. Lana Del Bey December 22, 2013

Yess my young honey bee is learning from the queen of pop! I’m 19 and as a gay male I actually love all madonnas 80’s hits she was truly revolutionary and relevant, rihanna is the modern day madonna in terms of hit songs but beyonce will go down with the same legacy Madge has created.

  31. FutureCIARA December 22, 2013

Slay Bey, But Madonna is your best example that you can come up with??

There are sooo many more Icons and Legends you could have chose from for branding yourself after.

On the plus side, You looked sickening in head to toe Tom Ford!! This ensemble was actually among my favs from his last show.

And seeing that one of your interest is taking time to develop other artist, I found myself pondering on what kind of artist you would/will have created….. A little hard picturing the queen as a mentor, But I’m sure you would be great at it!

  32. Rihanna black madonna December 22, 2013

Ever since, some, in the media called Miley Cyrus, the Madonna, Rih is pulling away from the tag. Why be the new madonna? BE THE one and only rih, I mean, Rih is breaking record at an age when MADON’ started her career.

Now, Rih is working with influential taste makers like Damien Hirst ( i hated the medusa thing ) and Oliver Balmain. Not to mention, Inez and Vindooh. SO, she does not need to cling to being a madonna wannabe, leave that to the lessors like Miley and bey, who, actually mold their blueprint on things Rihanna already done back in da day.

    It is what it is.

  33. DIGGER BEY December 22, 2013

This R**** stan is so PATHETIC lmao. How can THE QUEEN get Madonna to just call her Queen?? Madonna never folds for anyone. Its either she likes u or she don’t. She herself called THE QUEEN Queen. #MAD IT WASN’T UR FAV

Of course Rihanan was wearing this collection back in the summer and is she rocking new Tom Ford now. Wanna know Tom Ford said about Rih? He said Rih is his muses and HIS CLIENTS WANT TO DRESS LIKE RIH, so he basis his collection on what she will do next. He said no one rocks the game like RIH, she IVENTS the fashion that lessors like beyonce wear 3 years later. OOOP.

  37. RoyalKev December 22, 2013

    @ Rihanna Black Madonna

It funny how you claim Bey’s copying Rih, yet you ignore Bey’s influence on Rih.

Bey’s RTW (2011) definitely inspired Rih to step it up in her WHYB video (2012).

Baby Boy (2003) definitely birthed Rih’s Rude Boy (2010).

The whole urban to pop thing was Rih following behind Bey’s footsteps. Bey went from CIL (2003) to If I Were A Boy (2008)…

Rih went from Pon De Replay and finally dabbled in that territory with We Found Love (2012). All their other songs before that point really received both Urban and Pop airplay.

Bey’s “4” album (2011) was her contribution to reviving R&B. Rih’s seem to go from Pop being her concentration to incorporating R&B on Una (2012).

  40. DOSSOME December 22, 2013

Honestly everyone needs to look to Madonna on how to drive your own career…I had only one problem with Bey,she didn’t seem to push herself as an artist, more like playing it safe and when Videophone dropped,I lost hope…I still don’t want to think of another artist when i see Beyoncé,Not Tina, not Diana, not Madonna, not anyone else rather than Beyoncé herself

How is rihanna ten steps ahead of beyonce, when the only thing she has on her is number 1 singles? And the navy calls the hive delusional. The f****** nerve. But anyway, back on topic,it’s great that beyonce is looking up to queen Madge. Queens respect queens. Madonna has impacted the music industry and has made her mark, and there is no doubt that beyonce will do the same. Her talent, hard work, drive and passion to do what she loves just because she loves it(not for the money) is the reason why she is one of the most respected in the industry today, and will go down as a legend. If she is still here after 16 years, she will be here in years to come.

  59. Hivy December 22, 2013

I can’t at the Navy showing their 3rd grade education. The woman said she wants to build her own empire like madonnna. This have nothing to do with her music. As @Dossome said she played it safe. That is why she said she felt like she was a little girl and was afraid to take risk but since she got her child she didn’t felt that way anymore. She took all her fears and put it in the music and to be honest I a few people have been waiting for her to take this risk in her music. Madonna is years ahead of Bey in sales but sales isn’t the only thing that gives imapact or legacy. So clearly but what she said “Columbia Records” ain’t getting her money. Parkwoods < her company is getting the money so in other words her Tour gross and Album sales are hers. Learn to Read.

Yes I was like shocked when the list was released.

Only a week later, no single out, only released to iTunes, and her new album hast already sold 100.000 iTunes copies in Brazil, the best selling by an international artist of 2013 ….. and is still #1 on iTunes there as we speak

    Isn’t that’s awesome!

  72. S****** Blonde December 22, 2013

Like many here have said, I think Beyonce wants to be like Madonna in the sense of owning her own career, Madonna’s talent is not limited to be an Avant-Garde artist, she created the example that a woman can be as powerful as any man in the industry, Beyonce wants to do that and she will do it, she works hard, nobody can say Madonna didn’t work hard for her career, actually like Madonna, she will have to work harder than the rest, simply because people don’t want to see her in that untouchable level that Madonna builded for herself that separates her from the rest of her peers, it takes more than a gifted voice to be on that level, Madonna don’t have the voice but she is the riskiest mainstream artist ever, she relies on her art, Beyonce would be in another level if she can be as artistry as Madonna, imagine if she does something ala Ray of Light with that voice of hers, that would put her on the top of the Pop world. When you think of MJ, Janet and Madonna, you think, as much as Madonna don’t have the dancing skills of them, she has something that they simply lack, a vision for art, Janet more than MJ tho, Madonna knows where to pick and where to let things, always looking forward, Beyonce can do that, if she really wants to. I always thought of Beyonce as the opposite to Janet and Whitney, she have the strength that they lack, in that sense, she is very similar yo Madonna, they are very dedicated to their career.

  73. alex December 22, 2013

everything she inspires is giving up the wonderful artist she was, for following this unhuman madonna.

    Bee fan. true story

  74. RoyalKev December 22, 2013

  75. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 22, 2013

@Amanda Bynes she has been acknowledged by legends like Prince,Diana Ross,Madonna,Tina Turner,Stevie Wonder and the greatest legend MICHAEL JACKSON. She has also won the International Award of Excellence, which has only been own by legends. Have a seat on the floor

  76. Hivy December 22, 2013

Thank you very much @S.Blonde. Everything I wanted to say you said it.

    This is what she said:
I started my own company. My father taught me so so much. So much.
When I decided to manage myself it was important that I didn’t go to some
big managment company. I felt like I wanted to follow the footsteps of
Madonna and be powerhouse and have my own empire.
And show other woman when you get at this point in your career,
you don’t have to go sign with someone else and share your money and success.
Do it yourself. I said to so many people that I wanted to do an visual album and they
were like oh, ok. But I did it. And with my own company. And I’m very proud of that.

Of course I wanted people to love it. I wanted critics to love it. I wanted it to be successful.
But my goal was not picking up a #1 single. My goal was putting together a body
    of work.

(At the album release day) I had glass of wine. And my cousin Angie was girl are you alright? Cause I was talking to myself.
Because I was terrified. I was so scared.
And I already envision like the worst things
    that could happen.
I’m like people are going to hate it. It’s just the things we all go
through. It’s just human. I saw it live on iTunes.
And you know, you’re just waiting for the first comment.
And the next morning I was just so…(happy)

  77. RDK December 22, 2013

A queen showing another Queen/Legend mad respect i love. it.

  78. Jamie December 22, 2013

How bout follow your own footsteps… stop tryna be everyone else be yaself

  79. JER December 22, 2013

HMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Bey don’t push it honey. Beyonce has never EVER once even mentioned Madonna as an inspiration. It’s always been an older R&B/soul legend: Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, or whoever was receiving an award that day. So this is a surprise to me. The pop star that has wanted to be like Madonna and been unashamed about it is Rihanna. So …..yeah….

  80. LOVEBIRD – SHADE GALA GOODBYE WORLD TOUR (20TH – 23RD) December 22, 2013

This s*** is hilarious. Sorry Bey but I never see you as a Madonna, never, you’re more like Tina Tuner/Diana Ross and that is ok.

Madonna had an edge to her, she had a style to her, her sound was very versatile and she was fearless, there is only ONE person I see doing that today and it’s not you Bey, sorry.

  81. Janice December 22, 2013

And by she, i was talking about Rihanna who constantly relies on fashion to make an impact. Her voice alone couldn’t do it.

  82. Janice December 22, 2013

You all need to realize, Beyoncé didn’t said that she was inspired musically by Madonna. She was inspired by her vision of market on how to sell her image. And Madonna did that and so does Beyoncé. Beyoncé is staying true to her roots that are urban r&b music, she’s not doing pop music just like Rihanna who makes a new debut on every album. You can’t see personality on her discography, only a puppet. Madonna traveled between styles, but it was consistent and so her. You could see where she was coming from, unlike Rihanna who follows trends. The only trend Rihanna sets are on ratchet salons and ratchets copy her hairstyle. You can’t see a goal to make an statement on rihanna’s music. She does only because it’s going to sell.

Beyoncé otherwise is making an statement with this album, and its more like she said. An album to make an impact on the industry, just like Madonna did back in her peak. But musically? Not really.

  83. Mark111 December 22, 2013

You people are stupid. Bey alway channeled the essence of the greats. From Ross to Tina to ME and now Madonna. She doesn’t want to be like Mo as an artist, but channel Mo free spirit and feminism and business sense. Hint tours.
