Seven years after joining the record label, the hit-making genius that is The Dream has cut ties with Island Def Jam, despite the pivotal part he played in pushing it’s leading performers to noteworthy heights.

Details below…

Despite struggling to find footing as an entertainer at the label, his position as Executive Vice President of A&R at Def Jam saw him enjoy success through releases launched by the likes of Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey and serial chart-topper Rihanna, with whom he first collaborated with on 2007’s ‘Umbrella.’

Announcing his departure via his personal Instagram account, the ‘Single Ladies‘ creator went a long way to tease a brand new venture with:

“Let the New Tides bring The Things not yet seen. There’s more where those came from!”

After its May 28th 2013 release, the charitable chart staple’s last LP with the label, ‘IV Play’ now finds itself on course to hit US sales of 100,000 units, after shifting 42,000 units in its first month.

I bet you he goin 2 Roc Nation

  3. Lovebird January 9, 2014

Let’s be honest, he was fired. It’s not like he brought anybody new to island Defjam or developed their current roaster like an AnR rep is supposed to do.

    i don’t like This Person, I just Don’t like Him. 😕

  5. ROSEGOLD January 9, 2014

42,000 in a MONTH? And he had the nerve to say Ciara was “done”? Lol…

  6. Lovebird January 9, 2014

That story about Being Mary Jane being a ratings winner put a smile on my face.

Thank god BET is finally getting it right.

  7. ROSEGOLD January 9, 2014

@Lovebird BMJ is an awesome show, I’m glad it slayed in ratings. Gabby is a badddd 41 year old! Of course people are boycotting it and Scandal because of the subject matter, but you can’t please everyone. It’s just TV! The days of the Cosbys are long gone….get over it people!

  8. Lovebird January 9, 2014

Yes the show is fantastic, never mind the haters.

  9. MusicStan(Ya’ll know who I stan for) January 9, 2014

Welp with the dream leaving Def Jam and no tea no shade but rihanna is on their roster I wonder if she is still going to work with him cause usually when someone leaves a label as a singer songwriter or producer the artists don’t work with them anymore due to conflict of interest…. hopefully we will see what 2014 bring fr him as long it isn’t singing cause he need to let it go ( in my keyshia cole voice)

  10. The Boy Toy January 9, 2014

@Musicstan isn’t he affiliated with Roc Nation? He ain’t leaving Rihanna’s camp lol.

  11. Lovebird January 9, 2014

I don’t think IDJ will question their biggest artist ATM.

Looking at Defjams performance last year, RIHANNA has a lot of leverage there.

  12. The Boy Toy January 9, 2014

What I like about the Dream is he always gets Rih to cowrite with him. They’re a good team.

  14. Jay Scorpio Navy General January 9, 2014

in other news… have you guys catch the tea in the Most Juicy tab… All those Beyonce threads are fading like that album of hers is about to do…..

    **plays Rihanna’s Fading***

Can’t you see that you’re…Fading, fading, fading, fading…Away, away, away, away…I opened up my eyes, and I finally realized…Today, today, it’s too late…You’re fading away

Bye Bee, the hype is OVA!!!

  15. ratedxxx(bad chick) January 9, 2014

I’m sorry the dream is not really a great songwriter..his songs never quite stayed with me…he should thank rihanna every single day, because she put him on the map…

    now I f**** with ne-yo..ne-yo can write…

  16. ABC January 9, 2014

    Oh…

  17. ratedxxx(bad chick) January 9, 2014

the dream is not on roc nation…has never been on roc nation…

he just writes for basically rihanna and beyonce on there..

as for the show being mary jane.. I haven’t watched BET in years, none of their shows has interest me..but since being mary jane is a scandal knockoff..and basically gabrielle was made to play that part..she lived it for years as a jump off…

I mean who am i to knock somebody’s elses hustle..good for gabby..aint gonna watch it..but good for her

  18. ABC January 9, 2014

Being Mary Jane and Scandal are nothing alike aside from
Sleeping with married men. Why are you judging something you haven’t watched ?

  19. ABC January 9, 2014

If anything “The Haves and the have nots” is the closest thing to a Scandal rip off……

  20. ratedxxx(bad chick) January 9, 2014

I prefer shows like law and order, snapped, cop shows, lawyer shows, anything that has to do with murder, who did it, why..

shows like scandal and so on never interest me…I’m glad a black woman finally is able to carry a show on a huge network…

but gabby, meh…never liked her as an actress…but good for her for stacking her paper, because we all know her fiance is a dirty dog ass dog

i don’t know why people are surprise gabby is great on that show..it’s her real life..s*** she better be great at it

  21. ABC January 9, 2014

Gabrielle Union is brilliant as Mary Jane Paul. It’s no an uncommon story. A 30 something year old woman engulfed in her career and taking care of everyone else, but feels like her biological clock is ticking. She just wants to be loved and have that baby & a picket fence. Maybe that is her real life, but who am I to judge? My mom was so focused on her career that her love life took a back seat, and she didn’t have me until her mid-30’s…..

  22. ABC January 9, 2014

Scandal isn’t as good as it used to be….too forced and corny now imo but Kerry does a damn good job as Olivia Pope

  23. ABC January 9, 2014

The Dream lost me when he said that he’d no longer work with Keyshia because of her bow down statement. What kind of ass kissery?

  24. Lovebird January 9, 2014

Well that is your opinion and it’s noted.

I avoid BET like a bad rash save for the BET Awards but BMJ is the only thing that has interested me on that network of recent.

I’m mostly happy BET has finally gotten it right. They have two very talented chocolate actresses (Gabby, Tika) on it and are telling a story common amongst successful African American women.

What’s wrong with that. Anyway to each their own, but I love the show and will continue to watch.

Less ratchet reality TV, more shows of substance; good job BET.

  25. Stephy Tha Lambily January 9, 2014

Yall need to shut up cause this MAN wrote Beyonce’s & Riahnna’s biggest hits… Also, wrote a whole bunch of other hits for them as well…

  26. Lovebird January 9, 2014

That doesn’t mean we have to like him. He is an insecure asshole.

  27. Keri Krew Kween January 9, 2014

Sorry but the Dream proved to be a one trick pony. Not a fan of his work

  28. Kareem Williams January 9, 2014

This is going to be good for the dream. Now he can get that Independent money.

  29. Stephy Tha Lambily January 9, 2014

How are you not a fan of his WORK… When im sure you listen to many of Beyonce’s & Rihanna’s songs… LOL

  30. Fantastic January 9, 2014

    Roc nation

  31. FAF January 9, 2014

I used to like him but he’s so negative.. SMH! Just catty like a b**** and if he goes to Roc Nation he’ll be put on the shelf there, too.. Kylie moved there & how did her song w/ Ludacris do?

  32. FutureCIARA January 9, 2014

This is the same old tired Queen that is only capable of writing successful hits for Beyonce & Rihanna, but cant get a hit anywhere outside of those two artist. (Ciara, Kelly, Brandy, Mariah, Etc…)

The same old tired Queen that wrote left over scraps for Ciara, and even insisted on being featured on not 1 but 2 of Ciara’s albums just to get his name out there as an artist, But it FLOPPED hard. (No doubt because he had something to do with its production)

The same old tired Queen who released a solo album in 2013 and it was the biggest FLOP of the year, but continually shades every artist except Bey & Rih in all his interviews… (Ironic Flop Queen)

(IV Play sold 23,000 copies in its first week. In its second week the album sold 9,100 more copies. In its third week the album sold 5,500 more copies. In its fourth week the album sold 4,600 more copies bringing its total sales to 42,000.)

The same old tired Queen that couldnt even write a hit song for Christina Millian, The freaggin Mother of his child, just so that they can be well off.

THE DREAMER has been DONE! And will never achieve success like “Single Ladies” ever again. He’s had his time and he should just retire now, We all know he was FIRED or “released” from his label. And the producer department has been taken over by fresh NEW talent anyway. So Im pleased by this news!

    BEAT IT CREEP!!!!!

  33. Josh January 9, 2014

Now I’d like to see him work with Christina Aguilera! I think He could make something really s*** and catchy with her!

  34. Ami January 10, 2014

He’s a cheating louse! Don’t know why he gets any attention from the media 😡

  35. The Beyonce World January 12, 2014
