Scribbled in history books for some good and not-so-good reasons, 2016 brought with it some of modern entertainment’s most memorable moments.
As the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on 31 moments that rocked – and to some degree shaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.
Next up, we reflect on the habits of the serially tardy songstress Lauryn Hill…
After earning quite the reputation for tardiness – or all out absenteeism – the Grammy-winning diva did little to quell those thoughts by the time the 2016 Grammys rolled around. Scheduled to perform with The Weeknd, Hill canceled at the last minute citing “little opportunity to prepare.”

The Recording Academy not only clapped back (hard) by vehemently denying Hill’s claims, they even allege the singer had plenty of time to prepare and had rehearsed well in time for the show. Click the pic to read more:
Later that week, the singer made it up to fans by hitting the late night circuit with The Weeknd (click here to read more on that). But, just as murmurs about her tardiness were starting to lower, Atlantan fans took to Twitter to drag her for being unforgivably late to a show there. So late, she was later confronted by a fan and even clocked by Questlove for her incessant lateness.
Click the pic to read her now infamous apology where she states:
“The challenge is aligning my energy with the time, taking something that isn’t easily classified or contained, and trying to make it available for others.”
Wrapping her year with a North American tour, we’re hoping reports of tardiness are being overshadowed by jaw-dropping performances and that 2017 doesn’t follow with many of the reports that damned her 2016.
