Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 2006 #FBF

Rihanna's 'Unfaithful' Reaches Its Hot 100 Peak
Published: Friday 21st Jul 2017 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll unlock ‘Unfaithful,’ the second single from Rihanna‘s second album, ‘A Girl Like Me’ (click here to read our ode to the project). Produced by Stargate,  the Ne-Yo-penned tune made its way onto charts the same week her song ‘SOS,’ the first of her 14 chart-toppers, hit #1 on the Hot 100.  At the rate ‘Unfaithful’ accelerated to the top 10, it almost seemed Rih was due for a repeat at the top (but this week in 2006 saw those dreams dashed when the song peaked and stalled at #6).

Her third of 31 top 10 singles, ‘Unfaithful’ eventually went on to triple platinum status and remains a fan favorite among her ballads.  Tuck in below to relive the tune and see who joined Rih in the top 25 this week 11 years ago:

Her name will live on for a very long time! Whether the haters believe it or not ??

Proud of my Chika. Real definition of don’t let nobody tell you sh*t. Believe in yourself and work hard. Hustle beats talent when talent don’t hustle.

I never understood the love for this song, it’s f****** horrible! Not so much the actual song, it’s your regular pop ballad that you’d expect to chart because it’s tailored for BB. But her actual voice at that point was ready for strong ballads. It’s very whinny and strained and her pronunciation isn’t that great. I think now, she could definitely give a good “Rihanna” performance of it not that there’s more age and depth there. That particular recording is just the theme song of during animals.

Listen to her performance of this song on the Loud Tour, it’s way better than the studio version!

Sorry her whimpering alto tones never worked for me, so she doesn’t get my funds..??‍♂️

You do keep repeating the same thing on all of her posts. Rih-Whine-a. We get it, you don’t like her/her voice, move on and stop commenting on her.

11 years later and still in the top 10 on the chart

I like ”Unfaithful’, it’s a shame that Rih pays dust to her early catalogue, she had bops in her first two records.

That Billboard Hot 100 in 2006 is amazing, I still play Promiscuous, Crazy, Me & U, Ain’t No Other Man, Buttons, Dani California, I Write Sins Not Tragedies and SOS. The music scene today is really lacking quality (still can’t believe Despacito is number 1, maybe something is wrong with me).

It has over 314 million views on Youtube as well. The only song from 2006 with more views is Hips Don’t Lie (and that was a monsert hit).
Anyway, I liked A Girl Like Me, it’s a cute albums. Kisses Don’t Lie, A Million Miles Away, Break It Off, SOS rock.

Still at the top of the charts 11 years later. It’s crazy how 95% of the artists on the retro rewind charts are irrelevant flops now.
