Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
This week we’ll go back to ‘Feedback’ – the lead single from Janet Jackson‘s 2008 album, ‘Discipline.’
Written and produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, the song was hailed a comeback for the Pop icon who – thanks to the infamous 2004 Super Bowl incident – had been blacklisted from radio stations and other promotional platforms across the country.
2008 brought with it a much needed change as the industry blackout had a significant impact on her ability to build awareness around projects released in the time frame leading up to it. Beyond the wealth of critical acclaim afforded the tune in late 2007 before its intergalactic visual surfaced, Jackson conquered the likes of ‘Ellen,’ ‘TRL,’ and more with high octane performances of the cut to help boost public cognizance. The result? Janet’s first top 20 single in 7 years.
This week in 2008 the song bounced to #19 on the Hot 100, where it peaked. In addition to topping charts on the international front, ‘Feedback’ – now a fan favorite – went on to lead its parent album to #1 in the U.S. and abroad.
