The Weeknd’s ‘The Hills’ Certified Diamond

Published: Saturday 29th Jun 2019 by Rashad

As fans anxiously await new music from The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye), the singer-songwriter has much to celebrate as his 2015 hit single, ‘The Hills,’ just recently crossed the Recording Industry of America Association’s threshold for Diamond certification.

Details inside:

On June 28, the Canadian hitmaker became the 23rd artist in history to earn a Diamond certification for a song as his hit ‘The Hills’ – produced by Max Martin – recently exceeded sales equivalence of 10 million units (an effort aided by its whopping 1.3 billion streams on Youtube).

The second single from Tesfaye’s chart-topping ‘Beauty in the Madness’ album (2015), ‘Hills’ topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks in the year of its release.

    Who cares?!

A diamond certification in 2019 cannot, does not, and will not EVER compare to a diamond certification from any music released pre 2005
A diamond certification in the streaming era is technically half if not more than less of the total value it carried pre-2005.

I just really wish the industry would adjust the certification label they place on certain sales thresholds for example, it’s nearly impossible for most albums released to even scan 500k pure sales which is still considered only Gold. Shouldn’t the recording industry adjust that to platinum. Same goes for platinum certifications.. at this point they should also rename a million seller MULTI-platinum. Considering only a handful of releases can scan even 1m PER YEAR… back in the day an established act selling merely 1m would be considered a flop.. and a GOLD certification might even get you DROPPED from a label.. (Tevin Campbell, Shanice, Adina Howard, Craig Mack, Charli Baltimore, IMX, City High and the list goes on)
