It wouldn’t be the first time he’s rocked it, but today has seen Bruno Mars place the iTunes crown firmly on his head thanks to his new single ‘When I Was Your Man’.
Want to know how?
His not so secret chart weapon below…
In following a trend that many will agree is growing a little tiresome, Mars had the single discounted to 69 cents- resulting in its meteoric rise to the top.
Frustrating, considering the lengths this ‘habit’ has gone in overshadowing the full priced sales of his new album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ which has now sold 1,142,000 units no more than five months after its debut.
In the last week, ‘Man’ sold an impressive 235,000 units pushing its combined US sales to 2,196,000- a figure that while is impressive, owes a great deal to this discount that should see him secure a Top 5 spot when the Hot 100 chart is updated in the next few hours.
So let us know…
What do you make of discounted releases?
But I dont get it?????? Aren’t these labels losing money from doing this? What’s the point? It’s just a number. There are singles that haven’t been #1 that have sold more than singles that have been #1 for a week & then fallen out of the top 5
Why is his label, team etc… so DESPERATE to get this sing to #1?
They are only doing this because “When I was your Man” is currently in the top-5 of the “Radio Airplay” charts and so, clearly, they think that if they discount the single, it will inevitably get to the pole position quicker.
This is why the COMMERCIAL arena of the music industry is not gaining any return savings and hasn’t been for the last 5-10 years: Cheap acts + Cheap music = Cheap profit.
Whereas Adele, Emeli Sande and countless other Indie-label owned acts are selling more fluidly because their team are, cleverly, carving out their artist marketing and promotional stances more carefully.
UGH. >>>
Because when the masses see a #1 song they’ll be curious to see what the hype is about and more than likely buy the song as well. M***** see m***** do type thing..
SMH
they are so desperate for a number one single.
i wont be surprised if they cut his album in half again to obtain another week at number one.
69 cents???????what’s the point of working hard when you just going to dispose the final product so cheaply like this?Itunes,Youtube and all those file sharing sites need to be banned.consumers should get their asses back to the stores and purchase their favorite music FULL PRICE…69 cents!!!!like WTF????????
Love my Bruno, can’t wait to see him in Chicago in July 🙂
Bruno, I love you but damn. You’ve been the discount king this era. He was selling fine without the discounts….
No Tea… No Shade but you can’t be considered a premium pop act peddling your material at peasant prices.
No T… No shade but you can’t be considered a premium pop act selling your music at peasant prices. No ma’am!
At this rate, anything is possible with Bruno
Gaga’s syndrome.
Price cutting has existed for years. lol Gaga wasn’t the first or last.
Fact remains that artists will do anything to stay on top and that includes slashing prices and losing out on paychecks. I find this disrespectful to the industry. I’m going to bite my tongue and wait and see on this one.
First he discounts his album, now he’s selling discounted singles. Bruno is becoming every bit as much a stunt queen as those silly ass pop girls.
I get what you all are saying and I agree the last 10 years music industry has gone downhill. But these discounts are decided by the digital retailers for the most part from what I know, not the labels
Anyway, Bruno is selling very well, he didn´t need this one week discounts. He keeps selling almost 50,000 copies of his album every single week. It would be platinum anyway, with the discount for one week a month ago or without it
Anyway, almost everybody has “benefited” from these discounts: Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, Gaga, Pink, etc, etc almost everybody (from what I heard Madonna gave her album for free with her tour tickets last year)
I like how his fans try to make excuses for him. Sorry folks but he’s pulling all the same tacky tactics to succeed as any other pop star of the moment. Some people like to have an impression of Bruno as being more “earnest” than the rest, but he really isn’t.
Yeah, I’m not a big fan of Bruno Mars either, but I think this is a hate piece created by someone who is just sick of him. All you have to do is look at the picture at the top of this “article”. Can someone tell me what it has to do with anything other than trying to paint him in a bad light? When I was your man is a good song and guess what? The lyrics actually make sense to someone who isn’t an internet nerd using fake pictures of themselves. Plus 69 cents aint breaking anyone’s bank, meaning it’s not gonna make a difference. If people don’t like the song, then they won’t pay anything for it. Why would they? Try and think about it before you condemn someone over pittance.
