The mishandling of Lady GaGa‘s ‘Do What U Want’ remains one of modern music’s biggest injustices.
Released last November, the cut found favor in its original form as a duet with R. Kelly. Yet, when no supporting video arrived, not even a remix with Rick Ross or a stellar duet with Christina Aguilera could reverse the song’s fortunes.
Indeed, though reaching #9 in the UK and #13 on the US Hot 100, mass consensus was that the song could easily have been a mega-hit had it not been marred by the melee within the singer’s camp (see: departed managers, messy roll-out).
Still, the DJ White Shadow number appears to be the gift that keeps giving. For, today saw a new solo version placed for sale on iTunes Spain as part of an NRJ compilation.
The latest incarnation of the ‘ARTPOP’ track features re-worked lyrics (which were performed by Aguilera on their remix).

Mismanagement? Maybe. But every video doesn’t have to be a million dollar spectacle. A cheap video for DWYW with glamour shots, lip synching, and a dance sequence would have been better than nothing.
However . . . Dark Horse reached #1 before the release of the video. All told, DWYW did about as well as it was going to do. GUY exploded out the box on youtube, but the video release didn’t translate (so far) to sales or interest in general. In this Soundscan era, you can’t fake a hit into existence anymore.
Lady Gaga is flying into a headwind. Think Beyonce in 2011. Something about our collective musical tastes have changed, and for some reason, the public finds what Gaga is doing now passe. It’s a good album, though there probably wasn’t/isn’t anything that would have changed the outcome.
Christina made this song 100x’s better. Gaga trying to see her part was overwhelming because it really does showcase how powerful Christina’s voice is compared to Gaga.
Xtina´s is powerful but her belting is horrible and has always been. And it is so damn damaged now compared to a few years ago. Gaga can sing properly her own songs, changing them everytime cause she´s a musician too. The collabo was nice, but Xtina didn´t do it particularly better.

What has Gaga done to you that you are now against real vocalist like Christina just to make Gaga looks better, get over it, Xtina is superior when it comes to vocals and it’s not even close. Also if you can compares Gaga saying that she is a real musician and Xtina is not, then we can all agree that Gaga is a Musician and Whitney. Xtina´s belting has always been awful despite being powerful. It´s f****** obvious. But unlike you, I respect her and never attack her and in fact consider her a real artist who used to take risks with her albums. I appreciate her even though I´m not a fan. She´s not on Whitney´s and the rest level and you know it. I don´t know why you mentioned them.

Those were actually the original lyrics that she wrote. You can watch Gaga sing them on the Graham Norton show from September 2013. She should have released this version, instead of altering the lyric to make it more commercial.
