Jhene Aiko Battles For Billboard #1 With Debut Album / Performs On ‘Kimmel’

Soulful songbird Jhene Aiko is taking flight and is making a beeline for the top spot of the Billboard 200.

The singer’s debut album ‘Souled Out’ is currently duking it out with Gospel star Lecrae for the #1 position on the coveted count.

So as to give the LP an added push, Aiko secured a slot on the ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ show where she performed new single ‘The Pressure’.

Check it out below…

Hmm. That was not the one.

The song is solid, yet with Aiko’s stage presence (or current lack there of) it just didn’t translate well live.

We were going to bemoan the odd juxtaposition of Jhene and such a large audience – given that her music and performance style are much more suited to an intimate setting. Yet, the reality is that whatever the brand or strand of music one brings to the table, the said artist should be able to sell it in a compelling way. After all, likes of Jill Scott manage to thrill crowds of the major and more intimate persuasions.

Still, luckily for Aiko, her album makes for a great listen. As such, she has a solid body of work to help her perfect her performance craft.

Leave the R&B posts to someone who knows a thing or two about R&B. Mentioning Jill Scott was totally stupid on your part because thats a totally different audience and age group. Jhene will slay with this album – she’s basically an underground artist with only 1 hit under her belt and yet she has established a thick fan base because of her skill and talent.. I’m here for it

  4. The Wig Snatcher September 10, 2014

Who are the enablers lacking good taste who are buying Jhene Aiko’s new album besides Sam? I’m sure Def Jam paid Sam to say nice things about her on this post when he’s been shading Rihanna. Why are people supporting miserably, talentless crap? This is a reason why real talents are losing in this music industry. #sigh

    • Sit the f*** down September 10, 2014

Oh girl! you know nothing about talent if you’re a Rihanna fan. Sit down and shut up

      • The Wig Snatcher September 10, 2014

Smegma – you defending a Rihanna wannabe shows you do not know anything about talent. GTFOH thot!

      • Jhene Aiko Stan September 10, 2014

No, you GTFOH. How is Jhene even remotely similar to Rihanna or talentless? She makes quality music and is an actual ARTIST, not some puppet with no creative input. How dare you, a Rihanna fan, call someone talentless. Rih cant sing, dance, write, produce, direct, or play any musical instruments. Several seats for you.

  5. Who September 10, 2014

    what is a Jhene Aiko?

    • The Wig Snatcher September 10, 2014

      A Rihanna wannabe.

        Do explain how.

  6. HALF AMAZIN September 10, 2014

Jhene is interesting but every song on the album sounds the same. I’m afraid she might be a one trick pony. I was ready to buy the whole album but couldn’t get past hearing the same song 14 times. I bought 4 songs including The Pressure.

    • Cupid September 10, 2014

Her songs sound similar but her penmanship is amazing. Love her understanding on different aspects of life. Her lyrics are much better than possibly anything R&B female artist are putting out

    • Jhene Aiko Stan September 10, 2014

Maybe its just me but I dont see how Pretty Bird, Brave, To Love & Die, and Promises sound remotely similar. Different meanings, different production, different tones.

    Somewhere Cassie is pissed, lol.

    • AmbeRussell September 10, 2014

She can’t be too mad, she f***** to get to where she is at or wishes she was at. Ryan Leslie, diddy n her career still didnt go anywhere since “me n u”, which was the summer of 06. Her 2nd album has been pushed back soapy times that I graduated high school AND college in the time frame. So she can’t be too mad ppl didnt gravitate to her

    • Jhene Aiko Stan September 10, 2014

A Ciara fan couldnt appreciate good penmanship so Im not surprised.

Jhene proved her vocals at the BET Awards, so miss me with that nonsense. If you’re looking for a Janet Jackson type performer, Jhene isnt for you. If you want generic meaningless songs to twerk to, Jhene isnt for you. For people who enjoy quality music and ignore other irrelevant factors and focus solely on the music, then Souled Out is the album for you. I’m willing to argue that Souled Out is the best R&B album of the year and Jhene is leading the parade of the new generation of R&B. Jhene doesn’t have a strong voice but it still manages to be soulful and heartfelt, that’s what I love about it. People stan for images, voices, dancing, charts, or sales. I stan for the music and it’s effect on me.

Oh look another artist with zero stage presence. How do you expect to be a decent performer if you can’t even engage your audience properly? Aside from that, I will say her lyrics and instrumentals are on point so she isn’t completely off. She desperately needs to work on her stage presence and vocals.
