Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
Now, let’s press play on ‘Disturbia,’ a #1 stunner from serial Barbadian hitmaker Rihanna.
Found on the re-release of her 2007 ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ project, this week in 2008 the song’s ascension to the summit came as part of a summer long ‘musical chairs’ that saw she, gal pal Katy Perry, and rapper Lil Wayne consistently trade spots at the top and in other parts of the top 10.
Fans may remember after she enjoyed a brief run at #1 with her Ne-Yo-penned hit ‘Take a Bow,’ the song quickly bowed out of the top spot to be replaced by Wayne’s ‘Lollipop’ (which was quickly kissed goodbye by Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’).
Songbird Perry, on the other hand, wasn’t so quick to give up her time on the perch:

Omg Disturbia and Bleeding Love slayed me that year…also I Kissed a girl is overrated.
I kissed a girl sold half of your faves album sales with a SINGLE alone, don’t reach so hard halfy
Last I checked you don’t stan for Katy so get your bottom feeding ass out my reply section.
Half isn’t a whole uggmugg
Almost doesn’t count
And didn’t yall beyonce fans say it’s easier to sell singles than albums, anyway? 😆 😆 😆
Too bad Rihanna is a flop now
Rihanna was slaying that year. Love the GGGB era.
WOW. 2008… A time wen Plies waz actually relevant for music instead of (Sweet P****) Saturday on Instagram. I mizz this music.
Of course YOUR ghetto ass does.
OF COURSE YOUR WEAK ASS wud c** here trying to shade. Sit the f*** down
Ur shade is almost az weak az ur walls.
This week in 2008, Ciara was nowhere to be seen 🙂
I love that my haters dedicate their whole TGJ existence to me and my fav kii
Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” was a global smash. “Take a Bow” is one of my fav songs by Rihanna, the #1 song was trash back then just like it is now.
Rihanna bout to slay again… Now the she is done with her try hard mess that she Kanye West was feeding her.
That list is just as bad, even worse then than it is now…Viva La Vida,Pocketful Of Sunshine and Take A Bow are the better tracks on than top 20
I agree. It´s just a bad Retro Rewind. It all started to go downhill with the new millenium so I don´t know why they chose such recent year.
Not gonna lie, I thought Katy would be a one hit wonder in 08. Rihanna became Queen that year, and this also shows that Chris Brown qas NEVER the bigger artist, every time Rihanna hit would block Chris’.
This would be the year that Beyonce would see her LASt #1, same with Mariah and Ciara to EVER crack the top 10. (or even the top 20) opps.
This is a really bad Retro Rewind. If you want to see how the mainstream industry has declined you have to choose a year from the 90s or the 80s.
Haha “metro station – shake it”

Rosie and I used to jam to this back then when ScEnE was still relevent and Jeffree star was queen of the Internet.
