Yes, she’s not even an average or exceptional live singer, but her pen game is STRONG. That woman was CRAZY and CONFIDENT enough to WRITE her ENTIRE third album, which several labels WARN ARTISTS TO REFRAIN FROM DOING because the potential to score a hit is highly unlikely without a major popular songwriter or producer. Needless to say, she provided memorable gems like “Forever and Always” (she literally wrote this song at 4 am after waking up from sleeping and decided to add it at the last minute to her second album), “State of Grace” (arguably one of the best album opening tracks of this decade), “Treacherous” (often deemed one of the best songs she’s written and fans consider it a part of her trilogy) and “Clean” (the imagery in this song is so vivid and breathtaking. She literally tells a story while you listen.) Now, what I can do without is the production in “This Love”, although I love the lyrics. Her layered vocals didn’t mesh well and it was a complete mess all over the place. I was pissed. She could’ve recorded it better.
