Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
Today, we’ll get down with ‘I Wanna Be Down’ – the official inaugural single of R&B siren Brandy. Launched in 1994 from her self-titled debut album, the Urban groove was quickly lauded by critics for housing some seriously seasoned soulful vocals from the then-15 year old. Soaring straight to #1 on the R&B charts, this week in 1995 saw the tune stay put at its Hot 100 peak (achieved two weeks prior) amidst a group of the day’s heaviest hitters.
Joining rank with the likes of Boyz II Men, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and more, tuck in below to point out the familiar faces and find out where ‘Down’ hit its highest note on the pop charts:

“Practice What You Preach” was no joke!! OMG…”It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me” was fire too! I love Barry White’s voice. He would’ve made a good narrator for some Hollywood movie.

And just a month later Brandy’s debut album would be certified platinum.
Brandy,TLC,Madonna,Janet,Bon Jovi,Gloria,Barry White and Boyz 2 Men on the same chart…talk about diversity
Once again: incredible diversity and big talents (for the most part) in the 90s list. And once again: terrible list at present, except for Adele. The fact that Justin Beiber keeps staying there and has not had a huge #1 only due to Adele´s blocking power is appalling. He´s terrible and those songs even more.
