Billboard Weigh-In On Katy Perry’s Sales & What It Could Mean For The Industry

Published: Saturday 4th Sep 2010 by Sam

Though Katy Perry‘s sophomore set ‘Teenage Dream’ topped the charts with respectable sales of 192,000 this week, many were left wondering why the 25 year old never sold more. With industry estimates predicting sales of more than double such a figure, Billboard ask whether Perry’s case will have ramifications for the industry at large.

Check out their interesting article, which sees many a label exec weigh in, below…

Via Billboard:

By most measures, Katy Perry’s new album, “Teenage Dream” (Capitol), has been a resounding success.

The album bows this week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, thanks to first-week sales of 192,000 units in the United States, the ninth-best debut week so far this year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album’s first single, “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), has scanned 3.6 million downloads, while all individual digital tracks from the album have sold a combined 5 million units, according to SoundScan. Put another way, sales of albums and track-equivalent albums (where 10 digital tracks equal an album) for “Teenage Dream” totaled 689,000, according to SoundScan.

“It’s a thrilling accomplishment from our perspective,” says EMI Music Services executive VP Dominic Pandiscia, who oversees the company’s North American sales operations. “The magnitude of the marketing plan is about driving overall revenue around the project, including track downloads, ringtones and video sales. Album scans is one component of it.”

Yet “Teenage Dream” fell short in one key area: It didn’t meet first-week sales projections in the industry. And that, in turn, has sparked worries that the album’s performance may affect retail orders for other superstar releases due later this year.

Executives at other major labels say they expected Perry’s sophomore album to debut with sales of anywhere from 300,000 to 700,000 units, with most figuring the album would scan about 400,000.

“I’d like to meet one industry executive last week who thought her album would do under 200,000 units, because I don’t think that person exists,” a senior executive at a rival major says.

“It was a wake-up call for some folks,” the head of sales at another competing major says. “Some think the sky is falling. Others said, ‘Wait a minute, she’s a singles artist.’ And still others said EMI should have put out the album six weeks ago and it would have sold more.”

According to sources, EMI shipped 1 million units of the album prior to its U.S. street date of Aug. 24, which indicates that big-box retail chains like Walmart, Target and Best Buy were expecting the album to post robust first-week sales, as was Starbucks, which featured the title in its stores.

It would also be roughly in line with typical industry practice of shipping about twice as much product as anticipated first-week sales for a major album release. But prerelease shipments of “Teenage Dream” turned out to be about seven times debut-week sales.

The album sold 89,000 units at mass merchants and 65,000 through nontraditional merchants, including 50,000 downloads. It also sold 35,000 units at chain retailers and 3,000 units at independent stores and regional chains.

Competing major-label executives say it wasn’t EMI’s fault that the album didn’t meet sales expectations. “EMI did a tremendous job in setting up that record,” one executive says.

Perry shot to pop stardom with her 2008 debut album, “One of the Boys” (Capitol), and a penchant for provocative lyrics and music videos.

Newbury Comics head of purchasing Carl Mello says he expects “Teenage Dream” will sell well through the end of the year and that it will be one of the holiday season’s top titles. But he notes that the album’s first-week sales “aren’t as big as you would think for somebody who has become so omnipresent.”

While anticipation for Taylor Swift’s forthcoming album, “Speak Now” (Big Machine), had sparked debate over whether superstar artists will ever be capable of generating debut-week sales of 1 million units (Billboard, July 31), “Teenage Dream” has shifted the conversation to whether labels should even consider shipping 1 million units before street date.

“I don’t know how you ship a million units now,” a major-label head of sales says. “Even if I was asked to ship a million units, you just can’t do it anymore.”

Some label executives say expectations were too high because most female pop artists commonly sell a lot of track downloads but don’t enjoy big debut-week album sales. “When I saw how Perry was doing, I was shocked,” a senior sales executive at a competing major distribution company says. “But then I remembered that Fergie’s ‘The Dutchess’ only did about 160,000 units in her first week in September [2006] and it took until December until the fans started buying her like an album artist.”

EMI’s marketing push for “Teenage Dream” and Perry’s appealing stage persona will no doubt score her high-profile TV appearances this fall, which should help boost sales of the album. “Mark my words: I will bet you ‘Teenage Dream’ will sell more than [“One of the Boys”],” another senior label sales executive says. ” ‘Teenage Dream’ will be one of those ‘at the end of the day’ records.”

Yeah very sad times for the music industry, and it will only get worse as long as the internet exists.

  2. GangsterA September 4, 2010

only time will tell i think it will sell more and she wont be a single artist and it will def sell more than one of the boys the album is very dope love it

  3. Dave September 4, 2010

I’m confused why they’d think Katy would do those numbers. I mean who is she besides her highly charting singles. I’m surprised when has been fanbase and did the numbers she did first week with this album.

  4. GAGA MINAJ September 4, 2010

    I love the album

  5. I’m just saying September 4, 2010

Um, maybe people just didn’t like the album?

  6. OUPS I S*** ON YOU AGAIN … September 4, 2010

She is a single artist. If Gaga and Eminem can sell why not her …
she is a SINGLE ARTIST PERIOD-> NEXT

  7. royalkev September 4, 2010

Katy Perry has a really good album, but I have no idea why industry experts were expecting a higher debut week for her. I see Taylor Swift (who has a much higher profile) shifting much bigger numbers. Katy is still proving herself and showing the buying public her worth. She has a few hits at the moment, but she wasn’t by any means an album’s artist. I ended up checking out the cd and brought it due to the fact that I was finding so many of the tracks enjoyable. I’m still not a Katy Perry fan. I think alot of people don’t really care for her or feel indifferent about her at this present time. I don’t why know what kind of “experts” would not realize that?!

    ***Happy Birthday Beyonce Knowles***

  8. ADE September 4, 2010

Yeah I’m quite surprised she didn’t sell more as well to be honest. If Katy couldn’t sell what was predicted she would with two massive hits then there is no hope for Ciara. No shade but that’s the truth.

  9. Jaz September 4, 2010

i like almost all the songs on her album except for the singles she already put out…i may not enjoy her live but her songs are pretty decent

  10. pookie September 4, 2010

    every song sounds the same!
    Who needs the album?
And where’s the talent?…..I think that’s the bigger question!
Where have all the singers with actual SINGING TALENT gone?
That’s a much more important topic that an easily forgettable Katy Perry…who,by the way, I never understand why she’s brought up or featured on this site….
I get Lady Gaga but why Katy Perry on That Grape Juice….REALLY….

  11. DaTruth September 4, 2010

I swear some of these execs need to come out of their offices and reead some of these blogs! Noone I knew expected her to shift 400-700k! that’s crazy but she should have been able to move 275-300k easily with her ppromo and radio hits.

Prediction: asnlong as artists cater to the youth who don’t buy albums for the most part, gone are the days of 300k plus sales for hitmakers unless you are the flavor of the month or a hot rap or country artists.

Ciarra won’t go gold and will sell less than 130k first week (no shade)

Leona Lewis will not do well here either

Jazmine sullivan will go gold-she appeals to the youth and older people who buy

    Mariah Carey
Gold will be her nnew platinum and I don’t see her going platinum anytime soon uless they overship and discount heavily

    Whitney
Gold will be her new platinum as well but she will make up for it by catering to her international fans and touring

    Rhianna-
hmmm-no blockbuster first week sales but she should go plat as well

  12. MISHKA September 4, 2010

The fact is : KATY PERRY is fake and people know that.

Singing about California and making a Willy Wonka-esque video about it, that doesn’t make any kind of sense. Flaunting her (hot) body while dissing Lady Gaga’s acts proved how contradictory are her thoughts.

Katy Perry is just one of the girls: she’s pretty, she’s hot but that’s pretty much it. What is HER game? People know what to expect when they buy Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye, Madonna, Beyoncé or even Taylor Swift albums, but Katy is not a great pop singer, nor a great pop dancer, nor a great performer, nor a songwriter. Flaunting her boobs all over the place can’t fool nobody.

With the internet era , every artist has to be at the top of his CHOSEN GAME to outsell the competition. People won’t run to the store to buy Katy Perry’s album because of her Hervé Leger dresses. She needs to focus on what she’s better at and WORK on it. She’s not an A-list artist for now and for a sophomore act, that’s rightly disppointing.

  13. MISHKA September 4, 2010

BTW, HAPPY B-DAY QUEEN BEE !!!!

PLEASE BE BACK AND SHOW THOSE KIDDIES HOW IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE DONE !

you’re so on point. I’ve been saying the same thing for a while.
This is another reason why so many mediocre singers are so successful. The Internet. It’s good and it’s bad…smh

Hey, I just got your message not too long ago. Wasnt too sure

of how to reply to it. You Said Alot In One Message. And I dont

get to read that side of you much because it seems like overtime

there for awhile you built up a wall around you to keep people from

being able to mess with you. Alot of people do it after they take in so

much and just can’t take in anymore. I’ve definitely been at that point

before in the past, so I can understand why you may have felt you had to

do that. Could’ve been my imagination, but definitely seemed like you did have a

protective barrier up for a long time. Anyway, I wanted to let you know, that the

feelings the same in me. I know I’ll always be your boy, and I Hope you realize that

you’ll always be my boy. Your one of few people in my life that I can actually talk to

that understands me, and I definitely feel like I understand you and the the things

you tell me as well. So Its Good that we have eachother. I understand the dilemna

between you, your mom, and gram. Its a tough one for you to be placed in the

middle of an ongoing issue between the two of them that should and could

have ended along time ago. I don’t think that gram even realizes

that you end up in the middle of it when you stay with your mom or

associate with people that she dont get along with. I deal with the same

thing. Tonight I told her that you dont want her to be mad at you or hate

you for choosing to do what you felt was best for yourself by getting on

that side of town to be closer to your friends and other family. I explained

to her that you mentioned that she kept saying she was going to move

and never did. So you finally took it upon yourself to make the move yourself.

I explained to her that its alot more convenient that way. But your right,

she doesnt have any reason to be pissed, upset, or mad at you at all.

But ultimately, you have to do what makes you feel best anyway, and as long as

your happier, more comfortable, or more content, thats what matters most Tay.

Listen don’t think that way. When you said sometimes you feel that your abandoned

and alone that can be one of the worst things someone can feel and you think things

are going to be bad for you. Don’t think that way at all. Because First Of All,

I’m Not Ever going anywhere. I’ve been here since you were born and will most

likely be here until your older and more adjusted and use to being an adult and

living that kind of life. Well, Hey if you feel like you get alot out of talking to him

and the conversations help you, then thats what matters the most. As long as you

feel like it makes you feel good inside or better inside then thats all that matters.

Well, music is something that comes natural to you. Always has and always will.

Its Definitely in uor blood. Trust me, I know. BAsed on how much I write too.

Yeah, its so important to try to find answersto questions you have when your

young, but take those questions one step at a time. If you try to get them

all answered at once, it can get confusing. So, its really better to take it all

one question at a time. Dont Be Scared. Because Your Going To Be An

Adult for Most Of Your Life. You Might Feel Like Things Have changed

majorly, but you might not. t depends on how things go for you when you

turn 18. You’ll still be young. Nobody expects anyonewhi is 18 to have

their life figured out or to have their answers to this life all figured out

either. So if thats what you think everyones going to expect from you,

In All Hoinestly i believe those expectations are high for some who

turned 18. Im 27, and have been dealt so many setbacks, that I am

still figuring things out, when I had them figured out years ago. I just

took myself back to square one so many times by creating myself dilemnas

when none of it was ever necessary. But I learned from my mistakes and

quit doing that for good. So, You have good support coming from me, and

I’ll be around to help you do the things you need to do to get things in place

and set up, and figured out. Ya know, Moving, not letting people mess up your

apartment and trash it, not letting anyone f*** with you, or whats yours, not

letting anyone try to set you back further than where you’ve gotten, and show

you ways to keep you from doing it to yourself. I mean, thats just a few things

I can help you with. Hey, you dont have to apologize for that stuff. You were

young, and doing what came natural to you at the time. I just felt like you should

have been going to school and not skipping, and I felt like if people came over

that late, it should have been on the weekends when you were off school. I was

trying to help you have stability in your life. Thats all. But apology accepted.

I understand you were young and a teenager, and didnt give a f. I went through

the same in my younger years. But I’m just glad you put that side of you behind

you for the most part. I do understand why you had trouble getting up and going

to school. Its a known face that on average, over 27 percent of students who

go to jr high and high school have trouble coping with the situation as a whole.

Between the drastic change in the amount of people, the constant shift in

classes, different teachers, the fast pace of it all, and the way its structured

can easily be too much for many people to take. I went through the same

s*** and dropped out in 9th grade when i turned 16. People everywhere

couldnt understand why, or how I was doing it, but I was. I had everyone

fooled. But What nobody knew was that Inside, I couldn’t do it anymore.

I f***** HATED IT WITH A PASSION! I saw no reason to continue. In my heart,

it didnt make any sense to go anymore. I made everyone think I was going

for about 5 and a half months, and before I knew it, they started catching on.

I’d go to home room so that I wouldnt get reported as absent, so they wouldnt

call the house, and then I’d leave between home room and first period. And hey,

The same goes to you. I apologize for all the b******* I put you through in the past,

and want you to know that I see some of the decisions I made as the worst ones

I could have made when theyre were many other options I should have taken.

I vowed to myself and to GOd, that I wouldn’t Ever make certain decisions that

I’ve made in the past ever again. I dont fight with family, friends,or people

on any level physically or verbally unless its to protect my family from outsiders

and thats it. And only that. And I pray that my family and I arent ever put in

a position where we even have to protect eachother from outside people, ya know?

I want you to know that I love you too, and I Always Will! I hope you found it in

your heart to forgive me for all of the B******* I caused you in the past too! Im

glad you wrote this letter, because it shows me that your more real than 99% of the

people walking this green earth. It definitely shows the Real side of you! I love you

Man!!!! And Thanks you for appreciating me being there. I want you to know that

I will always be grateful for having a cousin in you who always was and is going

to be more like my other brother to me. Im extremely grateful for you being

there for me too! We are going to have to look out for eachother in the future

because some things might or might not come our way depending on how life

wants to treat us. As long as we think things out and deal with it like we are

stronger than those things, we always will be! I do have to sign off and get

going home for awhile. Ill ttyl. Love you Bro. Later!

Music industry sucks. Katy is really really great, and don’t forget that One of the boys peaked at only number10 in 2008, but it was gone PLATINUM everywhere… So just relax. and wait.

  17. Lexi September 4, 2010

well that was a wake up call.
kids arent gonna buy s***! they’re gonna Limewire it.
Katy has no longevity, in 4 years, shell be gone (thank God)
the candyfloss and tarty dresses arent gonna fool me!
her music is simple n meaningless, and people are not seeing her as an album artist.
I am surprised though, with all the promo! I think we’re in a new age in terms of music, people are gettng music for free AND being more selective about what music they buy.

  18. elleuk September 4, 2010

im still confused as to why they thought she would sell between 300-700 in the first week??!!
a hugh promotional push, clevage and a celebrity romance will not mask the fact that her music is quite simple. simple songs may go far in the singles chart, but who wants to listen to an album of 10 simple songs.
this means nothing for the industry as artist such as sade, eminem and lil wayne have proven that you can still sell big. Being a big celebrity does not mean that people will buy your music, it just means that you face will sell more issues of heat, us weekly ect.

  19. Sarah1 September 4, 2010

There are a few female artists that push large first week numbers. Beyonce, Taylor, Britney, etc to name a few. Even Mariah pushed large first week numbers with two of her last albums from the last decade.

It’s insane that these music exec would expect Perry’s album to sell more than what it did. Also, Fergie’s Dutchess album had some really strong singles which carried the album to WW success.

  20. DION-ISH September 4, 2010

KATY PERRY CANT EVEN TOUR!! SO HOW THE HELL DO PPL EXPECT THE “I KISSED A GIRL” SINGER (Known by plenty, before hand) TO SELL THAT MANY COPIES?!

I Get It…She’s had major success and promo, but so did Gaga and Rihanna, and there first week sells didnt even do that high (but of course later on it did)

  21. DION-ISH September 4, 2010

    MY POINT IS THO….

NO BODY TODAY CAN REALLY DO THEM NUMBERS OFF THE BACK LIKE THAT UNLESS YOUR LIKE A VETERAN IN THIS MUSIC INDUSTRY AND HAVE A SET (YET, GROWING) FANBASE LIKE EMINEM, BEYONCE, BRITNEY SPEARS, JAY-Z, USHER ETC…

  22. JAE September 4, 2010

@MISHKA basically said everything that i was thinking and more.
katy perry needs to find her niche, although the album is solid, its sound is all over the place. she needs to find her niche within todays industry.

    p.s. happy birthday beyonce~!~

  23. Kyle September 4, 2010

I really enjoyed reading that article. I think it’s only going to get worse and I don’t think album sales are that important to an artists success as they once used to be. I think us fans set high expectations for album sales as if this were like 2002, but those days are far over.

  24. jojo September 4, 2010

ummmmmmmmmmmmm……..i never understood why they expected katy perry to sell so well i mean i love her and bout the cd first week….but katy perry is definetly a singles artsit though her albums sell well too…she does not have a strong large fanbase/stanbase like gaga, rihanna, beyonce, and britney………….people like her but she is one of those artist that have 50,000 or more people saying katy perry s my favorite singer……she may be in the top ten but i dont think ahe is anyones favorite……example if u go to a katy perry fansite u may find 10-20 people on at one time…..and sometimes less than that …..go to a rihanna to gaga fansite and there is always 200-300 on at one time on like all of them(and there are alot)…….no shade at katy but why would someone think that if gaga and rihanna could not sell more than 200,000 their first week(how could katy) and those b****** were realeased the same day…imagne if katy would have released on the same day as rihanna ad gaga……………..she would have much much lower sales

  25. jojo September 4, 2010

………….people like her but she is NOT one of those artist that have 50,000 or more people saying katy perry is my favorite singer

i mean rihanna daily and gaga daily both have more than 50,000 follerwers on twtter and everyone has heard of those fansites does anyone even know the name of a katy perry fansite

  26. SHUT UP September 4, 2010

The music industry destroyed itself when it destroyed real artistry. In the mid to late 90s, record execs became more interested in manufactured pop acts (Spice Girls, Britney, NSync, BSB) and less interested in real quality music. The industry has been image obsessed since the 1980s thanks to artists like Madonna but it’s gotten significantly worse. Now if a singer isn’t outrageous or supremely attractive (Gaga, Beyonce.. etc) they don’t get the mainstream’s attention. Not to mention all of the “imitator” acts who are losing their luster (JT, Usher, etc.) The internet hasn’t helped matters either. The watershed moment of illegal downloading was Napster and once that was outlawed the illegal downloads simply increased with other people adopting the Napster format. i-Tunes and Ovi Music have helped to diminish such activities but it’s still a problem. People aren’t buying CDs anymore, making it harder for record companies to profit off in-store sales & vice versa.

Let’s also not forget how the music industry has screwed extremely talented artists over (MJ, Prince, George Michael, Hall & Oates, Toni Braxton, the list goes on) The music industry DOES NOT CARE ABOUT MUSIC!! They care about marketability and profits.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6055R020100106 >> U.S. album sales fall despite Michael Jackson boost

  27. Lady Gaga’s Invisble Twin Marty September 4, 2010

The problem is that these artists today are only singles artists, and just that. They cater to teenagers and young adults who may buy a single or two off iTunes if they really like a song, but never a full album. People are being more selective with what they buy and sites like Mediafire and Limewire are not helping. Hell, I know I’m not gonna pay for an album if I don’t even like half of the songs or if I know I won’t even be listening to it 3-4 months from now.

  28. MyWay September 4, 2010

Damn, this is the longest post I have ever seen on TGJ what’s up with that? LOL 🙂

What is this? Who in the hell thought Katy Perry was going to move between 300,000 to 700,000 units, with most figuring the album would scan about 400,000 in her first week of sells? Are they serious? The music industry had better wake up to the new movement sweeping the nation. Ppl work hard for their money and are not gonna throw it away. Ppl are looking for all around talent not just a pretty face and lots of nudity. However, she is on top of the game right now so you do have tp give her credit for that.

  29. DION-ISH September 4, 2010

    @SHUT UP

MADONNA IS LEGENDARY AND EXTREMELY TALENTED.

  30. WHITE JESUS September 4, 2010

so some american pie(whitegirl)with breast implants underperformed and the industry will have ramifications really.
are they out of their cotton picking minds never mind monica(90’s r&b star)moving 400-500 thousand her first week or sade etc WTF.
how about people just aren’t that dumb, she’s always trying to sell a concept like ”kissed a girl” and ”teenage dream” even ”California girl” is all about the idea of a cali girl which is okay i suppose eh.
Britney never sang about being a teenage dream she WAS THE teenage dream, what would really help her is some really good music.

  31. Rihsus September 4, 2010

    LOL no.
Yeah album sales are down but they were seriously on some heavy next level s*** if they thought she would 500-700 in her first week.
Ain’t nobody checking for her like that. She’s a singles act and her albums only have at best 4 songs -which are all meant to be singles- but this album has nothing left “hit” worthy.
There are few females who still pull in big numbers and she definitely isn’t one of them.

  32. XXOO September 4, 2010

So when Katy moves 192k its respectable but when Rihanna sol right around that number last year yall called her a flop…

  33. ILOVEXTINA September 4, 2010

Not only is she a singles artist, but the audience she markets her music towards are mostly teens & young adults that buys singles not the whole album. & when she goes live it sounds sub par at best & will have ppl saying “She wants us to buy an album that will cause massive blood loss from the ears?” She’s not on Bey’s or Gaga’s level yet. She can’t bring in that adult audience singing about California H*** & Teenage Wet Dreams. Now that Justin Bieber girl has an audience that will cry & make their parents go crazy to buy his album, that’s why he’s as successful & that’s the demographic she should have moved to w/ this album.

  34. Miss Virgo September 4, 2010

where have all the Katy Perry stans disappeared to ? You’re hopping on to the next fad already ?

    Damn dkiciriders

IT IS THE ECONOMY AND FREE MUSIC THAT IS CUTTING DOWN ON THE SALES. BUT CAREERS GO ON ANYWAY.

CONCERTS IS WHERE MONEY WILL BE MADE IN FUTURE. THOSE THAT DONT HAVE A GOOD STAGE SHOW WILL FIZZLE OUT.

SINCE MY CIARA SIZZLES ON STAGE SHE WILL ALWAYS HAVE A BOOMING CAREER.

  36. Rated X September 4, 2010

I’m shaking my head at those idiots who thought Kathy Perry was gonna bring 300-700k..
um, first of all Kathy is a single artist…and shes also using the same old “S** SELL”, crap to sell an album..
beside the weird outfits and hairstyles(haircolor), what the hell else different shes doing?

people are getting tired of just “S** SELL” crap..and beside this is a freaking recession..

people keeps saying albums just dont sell like it used too..true..
but look at Beyonce, Gaga, Britney spears, Sade, Sasan Boyle…all came out with big numbers
its not that people dont buy albums anymore, its just that we rather spend our money on people who are talented..

  37. CELEBRITY September 4, 2010

Monica sold 184 first week without a major pop hit.

Katy Perry 192k with two major pop singles, and one of them being #1 on the hot 100.

I hope Monica leaves J records because they always seem to drop the ball when she’s concerned. A major record company is waiting for Monica to leave J records, so they could scoop her up and put their promo machine behind her.

duhhh the album leaked..who’s shocked?? well im not

I agree with what a lot of you are saying. Katy of course was a powerhouse on radio these past couple of months, but I didn’t expect more than 180k either, and I bought her cd. I pretty much expected that because that is now the standard for a good first week, matter of fact, if you sell 100k, you have done a great job. The industry hasn’t seen a multi-milli record since Usher in 04.’ And with the times changing, and people not caring enough about music anymore to pay even 9.99 for a record, this what we have come to. Katy, idk, perfect summertime artist, and had everything lined in her favor so far. But the fall is when things get serious and many heavyhitters return to cash in on the holiday bonus. As with Taylor Swift, people care a little bit more about her as an artist because she is a musician, songwriter, and more of a universal appeal to all ages, that is what singles out Katy on a more musical perspective. But don’t get me wrong, it has only been a couple weeks since release, so she will definately sell more. But I don’t know why execs got their hopes up that high. Even us consumers can see that the music industry is not, and probably won’t be like it was before itunes. There you go Billboard.

Katy Perry IS a singles artist and except for the tweener singles no one cares about the album. Funny that the recording industry expected such high sales when people even on this board estimated 200-250k or less! LOL. Plus, the tweener market generally sells singles, they dont sell albums. Kids want them for free, they aint paying 10-14 bucks retail for the cd when tons dont even have jobs and have to get their parents to buy it for them. You’re talking the 14-17 yr old market who comprises the majority of tweener stars – Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ke$ha, etc.

Albums just don’t sell like they used to do the END!

  42. True Blue September 5, 2010

People just aren’t into her very much. It doesn’t have to do very much with whether people think she’s talented or not (if that were the case, 90% of today’s pop acts would all be flops), it’s just that people are turned off by her image and music. Plus, her label made the major mistake of waiting 3 months to release her album after dropping “California Gurls” as a lead single. They should’ve striked while the iron was still hot, and release her album when people were still interested. Besides, this is clearly a summer album full of party songs, who the hell is gonna buy it in September?

  43. notadummy September 5, 2010

Well, I went to 4 targets, 2 Walmarts, and 2 Best Buys before finding fantasia CD at the last best buy. The others were sold old which means that the sloop record lael J Records dropped the ball. They are the worst record label!!!

  44. this is NOT a madonna post September 5, 2010

    @DION-ISH

Can you please quit licking Madonna’s nasty old v*****. F*** OFF!!! Madonna was NEVER that talented & most people in the music biz know it (I can post tons of quotes if you’d like). She was all about image and shocking people. Without that she would’ve been another flash in the pan. Get over it. Madonna doesn’t even give a f*** about her fans

“My fans lead such boring lives”~Madonna circa 1985

  45. lax September 5, 2010

this is a blog, post and leave “DION-ISH” the hell along because its a free speak your dam mind site , stupid fool,, if she wants to talk about yo ass its not off limits, stfu…
DIRECTED @ THIS IS NOT A MAG POST, HELL IT IS IF “DION-ISH SAYS IT IS…..

  46. ty September 5, 2010

She is a better single seller than she is an album seller.
But to be honest, she sells blowjobs way more successful than she does in records.

  47. KD September 5, 2010

WTF? Katy Perry selling 700 000 units first, what the hell were these “execs” smoking when they came up with this number?

Anyway why was this not an issue when Flo Rida released his albums…I mean he had a string of #1 singles if I am not wrong, and his albums barely went gold (if they did at all). Some people do not have the IT factor to pull off monumental album sales; Katy Perry happens to be one of them.

  48. raraskils September 5, 2010

serves them right, tryna feed us all this crappy, fast-food music. :/
how do they expect to get such huge sales from a singles artist with only ONE hit album under her belt??

  49. raraskils September 5, 2010

she doesn’t have a strong following yet….according to most she’s just “that s*** chick they play on the radio”.

  50. ERIC September 6, 2010

KATY’S GOOD, BUT I THINK THE EXECUTIVES KINDA EXPECTED A MIRACLE… THOSE NUMBERS ARE NOT EASY NOW-A-DAYS.
SHE’S GREAT AND ENJOYABLE, BUT SHE WILL ALWAYS BE THE SUMMER-HIT GIRL TO ME AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE.
I HOPE THE SALES INCREASE THESE WEEK TOO. 🙂

  51. TRUTH IS September 6, 2010

    @LAX

Please get a life. This Is Not A Madonna Post is right. Dion-ish clearly has no life & stans for MaNdonna like she gets paid for it.

  52. james September 7, 2010

Record sales have steadily decreased since 2000. Obviously due to the internet.
Now don’t think this is a stan rant, but i’ll use Beyonce as an example (numbers aren’t accurate).

But Dangerously in love = 700k first week
    Bday = 500k first week
Sasha Fierce = 300k first week

and Sasha Fierce was the most critcally acclaimed. So you can kinda see the wierd trend.

This is also why i think its a bit unfair to say “well omg ____ has sold $X Millions!” when they were big in the 90’s, coz people just don’t buy albums anymore when you can just download.
