While pop icon Mariah Carey has made headlines recently for referring to her early 90s marriage to legendary music exec Tommy Mottola as ‘wounding’ due to his alleged ‘controlling’ manner (click here to read more), he – on the other hand – has had nothing but glowing things to say about his former bride.
Taking to Variety magazine to dish on his exit from the music industry and entry into the theater realm, namely with his latest Broadway venture (the Donna Summer bio-musical), the one-time leader of Sony spoke candidly about his present relationship with the songstress. Discussing her disastrous 2016 NYE performance and its 2017 redemptive redo, Mottola weighs in on the status of the singer’s current career while angering ‘American Idol’ fans for his comments on Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

ON REALITY SINGING COMPETITIONS:
“…I don’t watch any music competition shows. I was the biggest “American Idol” fan ever, OK? Simon Cowell is my friend. They didn’t develop one star.
Kelly Clarkson is a great singer. She never became a recording star. Carrie Underwood had a recording career. When you think about it, not one global superstar broke out of that show, and the show was No. 1 in every country in the world.”
ON MARIAH CAREY:
V: Are you and Mariah still friendly?
TM: I’m friendly with everybody.
V: Did you watch her on New Year’s Eve?
TM: I thought she was great. I didn’t have to give her advice again.
V: Did you call her last year after she had that stage malfunction?
TM: Yeah. It shouldn’t have been her problem. The people she had working for her, how do you allow that to happen? It’s like, “Come on. That should all be fixed in sound check.” There should be no room for error. I felt bad for her. Look, she’s as talented as one can be. Those songs, they’ll go on forever. Some of her vocals and all those albums we did are incomparable. Everybody tries to emulate them.

Kelly Clarkson has had plenty of global success. The only market where she hasn’t really enjoyed any success is Japan and the rest of the Far East. Carrie Underwood is very much a local act because of her genre, but she has still done well

Please don’t make yourself look foolish. I didn’t say she was a global star. Kelly has had success in the Americas, Europe and Australasia. Her albums chart in places like Japan and Korea, but she’s no way near the level Mariah was in those countries
I just wish people would stop making excuses for Mariah over the NYE performance. Technical difficulties aside, at the end of the day, YOU are the star and YOU have the voice. She could have broken into an impromptu acapella moment, or ANYTHING, other than just standing there looking stupid, knowing she could just put the blame on someone else. Yep I always say it. Mariah is one of those true greats we still have not seen again. The music+voice album after album is a standard. The only comparable phenomenon music has seen since Mariah, Celine and the likes is Adele, and she cannot compare when it comes to vocal ability and she has only dared to release two albums since becoming the huge global star she is. The type of things Mariah did are memorable.

Lots of artists can sing Mariah under. Mariah only made it big because she is a ho and she is white looking. She was whoring with Tommy while he was married with 3 kids. Nothing is really that special about Mariah or her struggle voice. Plenty of artists from the 90s could sing better than her but did not get as good a break because they were not whoring around with the president of a record label or passable as white (Karyn White, Toni Braxton, Kelly Price, Faith Evans, Yolanda Adams, Tamia, Tamar Braxtom, La India, Nikki Gilbert, Tamela Mann, etc).
