Exclusive Album Review: Ciara – ‘Basic Instinct’

Ciara has experienced several commercial struggles during the last 2 years. Her 2009 release, ‘Fantasy Ride’, performed poorly on the charts, selling less than 200,000 units in the US to date, despite producing the top 10 hit ‘Love Sex Magic (Ft. Justin Timberlake)’.

Additionally, instead of being praised for attempting to diversify her sound, Ciara endured a backlash from her listeners who argued that she had abandoned her Urban roots. So how has Ciara decided to respond to her critics? By giving them exactly what they want – a return to basics.

‘Basic Instinct’ features the Atlanta entertainer unleashing her sexuality over 11 bass-heavy tracks crafted by the likes of Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, Kenneth ‘Soundz’ Coby, Ester Dean, Tyler Williams, Nelson Kyle and Hilton Humphery. However, Ciara’s attempts at reclaiming her title as the Princess of Crunk N’B prove to be more lukewarm than the audio fire that some would desire.

Surprisingly, the strongest songs on ‘Basic Instinct’ are the singles. The Soundz-produced ‘Gimme Dat’ provides ample opportunities for listeners to put their dance skills to the test as they attempt to keep up with the high-octane beat and pulsating bass. Although the record may not have been the best choice for a radio release, it definitely sets the pace for the rest of the LP.

Moreover, Ciara reunites with one of her favourite collaborators, Ludacris, successfully recreating the chemistry of their worldwide hit, ‘Oh’, with the help of the sensual melodies and suggestive lyrics on ‘Ride’. Even ‘Speechless’, which was initially underwhelming because of The-Dream’s predictable and redundant productions skills, proved to be quite enjoyable after several listens; a ‘grower’ in every sense of the word.

Nonetheless, there is nothing redeeming about the weakest song on the album, ‘Girls Get Your Money’. Lyrically reminiscent of an elementary school playground game, the track is nothing more than uninspired filth. The limitations of Ciara’s vocal ability could not have been made more obvious as the tone of her voice made the record even more painful to bear. In fact lines like “they always want to holla but they ain’t got no dollars” almost require the song to be renamed ‘Girls Get Your Money And Buy Another Album’.

Other missteps on the LP include ‘Yeah I Know’ and ‘You Can Get It’. A glance at the production credits for the latter is not needed as The Dream’s lack of variation is easily detectable while listening to the song’s melody which is striking similar to his own ‘Mr. Yeah’ from his ‘Love vs. Money’ LP.

Still, all is not lost for Ciara as there are a few album cuts that are almost as enjoyable as the selected singles. The mastered version of the future club anthem ‘Turn It Up (Ft. Usher)’ and the infectious ‘Heavy Rotation’ demonstrate that she has not fully abandoned her quest for mainstream success on the Pop formats; mixing Dance and R&B for favourable results.

Other gems include the uniquely interesting ‘Wants For Dinner’ which includes unmistakable Reggae influences and the sensual mystique of ‘I Run It’ display Ciara’s ability to manipulate her voice to various compositions. She may not have the most expansive vocal range yet she certainly knows how to operate within her limits.

In the end, Ciara has put forward a mild yet respectable body of work with ‘Basic Instinct’. What is most apparent about the album is that the songs that featured contributions from producers other than just Tricky and The-Dream were clearly superior; another glaring example that variation is the key to success.

Undoubtedly, however, this project would have been better suited to an August release, as she originally planned, as it reflects a Summer vibe and it may be lost in the shuffle of the various other albums due this December. Nevertheless, only time will tell if this will be the hit that she deserves.

  2. Robier December 3, 2010

YOU WERE VERY NICE. MORE LIKE 2.5 OUT OF 5 STARS. WHERE IS THE ‘GREAT’ MUSIC SHE PROMISED MONTH AFTER MONTH?

  3. Simply Phillip Brown December 3, 2010

    Why Ciara????

Why would you have waited til the last minute to start promoting this album?

Half of Atlanta didn’t even know you had an album coming out!

You will be lucky to make it with-in the top 10, and even that’s a stretch.

  4. S*** December 3, 2010

    C-ERROR VS Skeri Stranger??

Lord Have Mercy, do I even want to know who will win this Battle of ‘the MOST BASIC B**** in Heels’?? FLOP

Unless you’re Beyonce, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, R.Kelly, or Usher. Its best you just throw in the Towel & call it a rap… 😐

  5. CIARA IS A MAN BEAST December 3, 2010

She’ll need all the luck selling 50k+ opening week.

As a fan, I’m ready for her to be dropped from her label. I think only then will she make better efforts in her music career.

  9. Music Lover December 3, 2010

    great review.. well written.

i totally agree with this album being suited to an August release as she originally planned instead of December.

Her biggest buzz this entire has been RIDE. when she released RIDE.. the internet went crazy.. Everybody was like yasssssss, yasssss.

People wanted more after hearing “RIDE”. august was her month to shine. As much as i want to see Ciara do good, I dont see it for her.

No performances, No promo, No interactions with fans, just NOTHING.

I look at keri hilson whose releasing her album december 21st. Her buzz is bigger than ciara right now. Shes doing video blogs, performing on shows, making appearances.. etc. and top of that.. She have a big controversial video out right now thats being talked about all over the blogs.

None the less. i wish Ciara good luck. I really want her to do well and I think alot of people do.

  10. chitwnchick December 3, 2010

i respect your opinion of the album I PERSONALLY LOVED ALL THE SNIPPETS but i do understand what i mean by “girls get your money” that is probably my least favorite song BUT that type of song Ciara knows how to make it useful when it comes to her concerts its just a song she can have fun with. other than that FROM WHAT I HEARD I LOVE THE ALBUM ALREADY AND I CANT WAIT TO BUY IT DECEMEBER 14TH

But Thanks That Grape Juice for your support and always honest opinion

  11. Criss_Vaughn December 3, 2010

Ciara made a HUGE mistake allowing The-Dream to produce her entire album. At this point in time, ppl should really start giving The-Dream and Tricky a break. so they can be more creative with the sound of their music. Every song on the record base don the previous sounds dated and like another previous production of a previous song.

FAIL. As a Ciara fan, diappointed. This was her make it or break it album….and she broke it. DROPPED.

  12. Ryan December 3, 2010

That was a very well-written review, Trent. I’ll still be buying this album to support my girl CiCi but it’s a damn shame that her music is rarely as good as she is.

  13. I BEEN FLOPPIN FOR A MINUTE December 3, 2010

I BEEN FLOPPING FOR A MINUTE NOW IT’S TIME TO TAKE A SEAT, GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME DAT SEAT, GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME DAT SEAT !!!

  14. TERRIBLE REVIEW December 3, 2010

How did trent get this job ? I don’t like Ciara but I agree, Trent is just terrible at writing reviews…just awful he has no idea at all how to articulate.

  15. I HATE CIARA December 3, 2010

Trent is just s*** at writing reviews, Sam should do them in the future.

  16. Janie December 3, 2010

    12.14.10…the end….

  17. Ciara Stan 21 December 3, 2010

Trent I really don’t care what your opinion is, I know that all of those songs will be hits! Ciara has put so much effort into crafting this project, and she has endured all of the hatred and criticism that has come at her. And through all of that she has kept her head high and hoped for the best. And that’s what Ciara deserves; the best. And I’m certain she will get it, even though people might doubt her, Ciara will reach her goals.

    CIARA——BASIC INSTINCT———12-14-10——————–GO CIARA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Shae December 3, 2010

lmfaooo i agree wit Nicole up there…after hearin britney about to drop her album in March and wit Chris Brown album coming around the same time….IM NOT GIVIN A DAMN ABOUT CIARA….SHE SHOULD HAVE DROPPED IT BEFORE WHEN HER RECORDS WAS HOT AT THE MOMENT. SHE F***** NOW!

  19. THEILLEST December 3, 2010

i actually thing the album is pretty solid so i’m expecting decent numbers with the help of inflated sales.

None the less promo should have started back in November… even a pre album tour would have worked in her favor.

  20. THEILLEST December 3, 2010

    THINK*

  21. toni December 3, 2010

Great review, I am still going the album because I loved what I heard so far

  23. BEE December 3, 2010

Sounds like this album should have gotten 2.5/5 stars instead of 3…

  24. Ciara Stan 21 December 3, 2010

    @THEILLEST
Ciara has been on a pre-album tour, and she’s gotten great reviews for it also.

  25. Shae December 3, 2010

  26. Ciara Stan 21 December 3, 2010

    @Shae
What Ciara fans don’t like Basic instinct??!!! Because I would know!

  27. luvmedj December 3, 2010

I’m still the fence about buying this or not, and thats a barb wired fence at that….its jus OK to me, a few nice tracks but for the most part its forgettable. I can see myself listenin to it for a few days then puttin it away and only playin select songs on my Itunes.

  28. luvmedj December 3, 2010

    “On The Fence” *correction*

  29. RihannaForever December 3, 2010

The album’s okay. I preferred Fantasy Ride and her first 2 albums but Basic Instinct is okay. I just hope it does well…Ciara deserves it. I just have a feeling this will do badly because it hasn’t spawned any hit singles except kind of “Ride”, but that’s been falling off of the charts since July.

  30. Drew December 3, 2010

No. Just no, Ciara. I’m sorry. I listened to the album and liked 5/11 songs.

Basic Instinct will NOT add to my album collection. I want to like Ciara, I really do, but she’s making BAD career choices these days.

  31. RihannaForever December 3, 2010

    @CiaraStan21
What’s wrong with a Ciara fan/stan disliking a Ciara album? There have been lots of songs by Rihanna that I don’t like…but I stan for her.

  32. Traci Summers December 3, 2010

@CIARASTAN 21 CHILE PLEASE REVIEWS ARENT NOTHING HER BEING SEEN AND BEING RELEVANT IS.. AUGUST WAS PERFECT FOR CIARA. NOBODY WAS RELLI DOING ANYTHING THEN .. RIDE>>>GIMMIE DAT>>>>BASIC INSTINCT RELEEASE SHE WUD HAV HAD A NO.1 OR NO.2 ALBUM SHE HAD CRAZY BUZZZ THEN… SHE IS NOT PROMO-ING HERSELF. AND U KNO WHEN EVOLUTION CAME OUT THAT BISH WAS EVERY F****** WHERE.PERFORMING OR DOING INTERVIEWS N THATS A FACT. SHE AINT DOING S*** NOW.SO STOP DELUDING URSELF

  33. Rob December 3, 2010

How ya’ll gonna give this 3 out of 5 stars and shade Rih with only 2. Fraud! Thats ok we all know who the real flop is.

  34. DEATH AT HOW HARD C-ERROR GON FLOP December 3, 2010

C-ERROR’S CAREER IS DONE, AND IN 12 DAYS WE WILL ALL SEE HOW POORLY THIS ALBUM IS GOING TO SELL. CH…… I CANNOT WAIT.

12.15.10 – BASIC INSTINCT FLOPPING HARD AS HELL 😀

@S*** I AGREE. BEYONCE, RIHANNA, ALICIA, USHER,ETC. HAVE THEIR PROMO/HIT SINGLES ON LOCK. C-ERROR IS JUST COMPLETELY HOPELESS.

  35. RihannaForever December 3, 2010

    @CiaraStan21
Ciara was doing promo everywhere for her first 2 albums but she didn’t really promote Fantasy Ride a lot and she’s only done a few radio interviews for Basic Instinct. If she had promoted “Ride” a bit more and made it a crossover hit, Basic Instinct would’ve had big first week sales if it was released in August.

  36. Deontae December 3, 2010

F*** all of you like forreal…put as of this review i agree. It was unbiased and well-written and that’s what I appreciate. If a critic can say the album is a decent listen and worth my money then who cares what promo Ciara has done. Damn the girl has been promoting for a while, just not as effectively as she needed to. Keri needs to promote because no one is checking for her f***** album. You b****** just blow me..f*** all you like forreal. Ciara album will do fine…and if it flops well it flops

  37. sid December 3, 2010

i love the album my fav tracks are ride gimme dat heavy rotation what he wants for dinner and speechless i will be getting the album when it drops

  38. luvmedj December 3, 2010

Ciara has waited waaay too long to release this, the entire buzz she had is gone and hardly ANYONE know’s its about to be released. It sucks cuz I like her as an artist but the label screwed her over yet again with no lube.

  39. LaKee December 3, 2010

HUGE Ciara fan here… and i gotta say the person who said she should have released her album in August was dead on. Even I, who couldn’t wait for the album, just really could give a hell. And after those weak ass snippets. The WHOLE album is filler. She’s making no statements at all on this album expect “I’m from the A” which we all already know. and why the hell is “This Is What Love Is” not on the album?

  40. TAMI December 3, 2010

Aww C-Error LMAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!Poor thang!I ain’t buying that s***. Anywhoo man I cannot WAIT for 2011!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Beyonce,Gaga,Britney, J Lo, Willow, Leona Lewis!Damn who isn’t coming out with an album. I heard Rihanna too.Smh I’ll say that s*** is gonna flop between errbudddy!

  41. Traci Summers December 3, 2010

@deontae WE LOVE CIARA SO U NEED TO SHUT THE F*** UP WE CARE IF CIARA FLOPS OR NOT.. SO SIT DOWN WITH UR LIL “RANT”

  42. Rated Xxx(aka rated x) December 3, 2010

are we really surprise that her new album is not gonna sell?

comw on now, I like ciara but, she hasnt been promoting that album at all…

and all those push backs, I mean why didnt her label release the album when her singles were hot?

hell I cant even remember the name of them…

cici u need to do better…

  43. Tracie December 3, 2010

I’m really worried that this album is gonna fail. I don’t think she can take another poorly selling CD. Good luck Ciara! Sincerely Good Luck!!

  44. ABC December 3, 2010

    @RIHANNAFOREVER

Fantasy Ride actually received A LOT of promo…she performed Love S** Magic EVERYWHERE including most late night talk shows, SNL, Ellen, Asia’s MTV VMAs, just to name a few…she performed on some fashion show that was televised too.

Waiting for the week of the album release isn’t the right thing for her, she really should of been doing performances when Gimmie Dat was released

  45. luvmedj December 3, 2010

…..and The Dream n Tricky did this entire project?

  46. Ciara Stan 21 December 3, 2010

    @traci summers

The reason Ciara hasn’t had much promotion is because of her team. They are not supporting her enough, and I don’t know why, she has so much potential, that I get confused why The Talentless Rihanna gets so much support and Ciara is just left alone… But whatever happens I’ll always be supporting Ciara, and not because I’m a die hard fan, I’ll always be supporting her because she has talent and strength.

Oh and @Rob we do know who the real flop is, it’s that goat with the red hair, with all of that promo she still hasn’t gotten a #1 album.

  47. Dave December 3, 2010

Where is the lack of Ciara’s vocal ability when she’s a trained singer with over 3.2 vocal octaves of range.?She’s showed her VOCAL ABILITY on her ustreams, & quite the few times live, she’s even showed over 2.5 octaves of range live without strain. So, i’m already dead @ that. That’s as far as i’m gonna go on this review because that was a dead point there.

  48. tones December 3, 2010

For all the ppl saying the album shoulda got less than 3 stars, have you heard the album: no, so if Trent think it’s worth 3/5 stars, then it’s worth 3/5 stars, but as I a hard Ciara stan and supporter, I can honestly say without a doubt, this album will flop because there hasn’t been any major promo, I’m predicting first week sales around 75,000 and a debut at #4 or #5 on the Billboard 200, and overall, this album will sell around 200,000 in the US. A few weeks ago Ciara tweeted about Yeah I Know, saying she can’t wait 4 ppl 2 hear it, so maybe it’s the next single and I heard a snippet of it and it sounds like a mix of Get Up and Goodies, so it may be a hit. But after this album is released, whether it sells 200,000 or 2,000,000 she needs to leave Jive, sign to brand new label and get new management and marketing and start working with new producers and songwriters and a take a break for a while and then come back with brand new s***.

  49. luvmedj December 3, 2010

@TONES I don’t think she’ll have much of a choice whether or not to stay with Jive, cuz I’m sure she will be dropped. This will be flop album #2. *shrugs*

  50. LOL December 3, 2010

     great

  51. Jasmine December 3, 2010

Ciarra cannot “recreate” crunk&b music without Lil’ Jon or Jazzy Pha. While many say crunk music is gone and I agree with that on some small level, still hooking up with the Dream to produce your album is not going in that direction. He is good for producing one or two songs on an album (only if he gives you his best material….for example Mariah Touch My Body) but when produces your whole album with Tricky you are bound for a too many filler tracks and no variety (…an example is when he produced Mariah’s Memoirs CD).

  52. g3 December 3, 2010

im disappointed not even at Ciara @Jive they’re no help just gimmie the album already i dont care if it flops or not w.e

  53. mindgames December 3, 2010

@S***: you stupid ass beyonce stans are all alike. i feel sorry for her having stupid ass stans like you. poor woman. btw, SHE’S NOT GOD OR A LEGEND. idiots

lollllllllll ‘Girls Get Your Money And Buy Another Album’ ..gee, “Girls Get Your Money” reminds me of a similar song with a similar title but better XD

good luck to cici, she’s gonna need it. XD

  54. rh December 3, 2010

Don’t be hating on ciara her ablum is going to do . You don’t have nothing nice to say please shut up. Yeah gimme dat hot and ride if u don’t like don’t buy it but I’m buying it dec 14

  55. toni December 3, 2010

why are people assuming she will flop and get dropped, it will be so funny if she does the opposite and prove the naysayers wrong!

  56. Imanni December 3, 2010

WOW!!! Not a huge Ci fan but i do like her. I have her 1st album it was alright but Evolution was better. I didn’t even bother with fantasy Ride and I’m not sure if I’m gonna bother with this one. SMH I want her to succeed to but I’m with @Music Lover I don’t see it happen either. Its a shame cause she is very talented she just don’t have the right people backing her up. Anyways I still wish her the best of luck and who knows maybe she’ll surprise us and sell more albums then we think.

    @Nichole
I was on twitter today when she announced that. All the Brittany stans were going nuts it was hilarious lol

  57. jeneil December 3, 2010

she’ll be DAMN lucky if she passes 100k sales in the first week

  58. d-mac December 3, 2010

I love Ciara to death but I am confident that this album will flop…I will buy the album but, I can honestly say that she has not grown as an artist not one bit, she still talkin bout she from the A…where is the depth???…She has the WORST team ever & its crazy bcuz she has so much potential..if this album flop, which i kno it will..she will be counted out of the indusrty and forgot about…i feel so bad for her..like why don’t her team pull strings and get her promotion together…she let award season pass & she has not performed anywhere…keri hilson is everywhere…I don’t even see Ciara on magazine covers anymore…smh i love her but she needs a wake up call & get inspired..take 2 years off & come back with a new look, sound, label & management team

  59. Keylaine December 3, 2010

I pretty much agree with most of the review i’ve heard the album….Girls Get Your Money sounds like it belongs on Goodies album which was five good songs(the 4 singles+ thug style(sorta)) and the rest fillers. Idk Why people act like that was a really good album. Evolution was far better Thats Right, Promise, Like A Boy, Get Up, CRUSH, My Love, Make It Last Forever, I Found Myself were all good and appealed to different audiences and different people liked them.

  60. THEREALNICKY December 3, 2010

    CICI

GIRL I LOVE YOU , BUT THOSE SNIPPETS WERE NOT THE BUSINESS!!!! UGH!!! GIRL , GET NEW MANAGEMENT AND A NEW TEAM

    IN OTHER NEWS:

RIHANNA LOUD HAS SOLD OVER 710,000 WORLDWIDE SO FAR AFTER 2 WEEKS!
WILL BE PUSHING CLOSE TO 1 MILLION COPIES COME NEXT WEEK!!!!!

    HATERS YOU LOVE IT?

    CUZ I DO!!!!!!

  61. Imanni December 3, 2010

    @Jazmine
Im glad you bought Jazzy Pha and Lil Jon up cause I was thinking if her whole purpose was to get back to the basics then shouldn’t she have hooked back up with the people who helped her in the beginning. I know Crunk N B is not in no more but couldn’t they have did something. Or better yet are they still doing anything; I haven’t seen or heard from neither of them in a while

  62. Keylaine December 3, 2010

Standout tracks on this album that are good and get better the more you listen: Turn It Up, Ride, Heavy Rotation, Gimmie Dat, I Run It, Yeah I Know! Speechless/You can get it are good choosing which to play depends on your mood. 7/11 tracks are a good listen which is pretty better than most albums released this year but it’s not a life changing forever classic type of album nothing released this year has been. This album Is good for the here and now but I only see a few of these songs off the album being remember for a long time.

  63. Pucci December 3, 2010

“Yeah I Know” & “You Can Get It” do sound like album fillers & i do wish she had more than 11 songs on the album, she usually does, don’t know why this time she decided to switch it up.

But I so agree, this definitley would’ve been better being released in August. Though I love Ciara, i have to say that ever since switching to Johnny Wright as manager, her career has taken a little detour.

Though she is still the s***, i made up my mind back in August & it’s not changing for anything or anyone… I WILL BE BUYING BASIC INSTINCT on December 14.

  64. TTB December 3, 2010

Her problem was having Tricky & Dream do the whole album…i think without them she might have had a chance!!

  65. Keylaine December 3, 2010

Jazze Pha isn’t that good of a producer seriously how many hits has he produced and how many of them are actually good songs?…I hate when people act like if Ciara hook back up with him things will magically be amazing….IT WONT! She probably do even worse lol

If anything she needs to hook up back up with Lil John, Dre & Vidal, Bangladesh, Polow Da Don, and Soundz& Infinity for her next album. Maybe a song by Darkchild. If she did that and actually wrote MOST of each of the songs like she did on Goodies & Evolution then she would truly be back! But her letting Dream and other people do most of the writing she will still be stuck in the same boat.

  66. toni December 3, 2010

tricky and dream did not produce the whole album, can you not see that their were other producers on the cd

  67. Mr. FENTY December 3, 2010

This is so sad, i pity the poor thing who put her heart and soul into it. But like someone mentioned, it’ll be lucky if it sold over 100,000 first week. She should of release it in the summer, when Ride was at it’s peak in radio play. smh- tragic

  68. Imanni December 3, 2010

    @Keylaine
MY BAD! I didnt know all those other people were producing her albums. I always saw Jazzy and Lil Jon in all the videos so I was just assuming.

  69. Christopher Smith December 3, 2010

How in the HELL are you going to criticize something you have not heard in entirety. Yall havent heard nothing more than 30 second clips of those songs. 30 SECOND CLIPS. A song is 4 to 5 minutes long. Thats like judging a movie by what somebody else says and not seeing it for yourself. WTF. After the albums release, and you buy it, listen to every song then you can address your opinion. It just makes me mad that nobody wants to see here succeed after all the hard work she puts into her creations. The least yall can do is wait until you hear every song before knocking somebody’s hustle. This s*** is ridiculous. What GOD has for you nobody can block. So Cici just needs to keep doing her thang, and everything else will fall into place. When she drop a #1 hit, i dont want any of yall hating asses to jump on the Cici band wagon because you are not welcomed.

  70. sugarwalls December 3, 2010

I love Ciara! She’s undeniably talented
However, She lacks the charm! She just don’t have that elusive x factor to appeal to fans!

  71. latin86 December 3, 2010

you Neva know these day really how cd gonna do Truthfully I throught Ne-yo Cd gonna Flop badly but he pull off pretty good number so Ci-Ci might could do the same

  73. Kyle December 3, 2010

I agree with all the comments sadly but truely. I feel like she had quite the buzz during early summer when she originally planned to release the album as planned in August. I am very concerned with how this album might affect Ciara’s career…She’ll be lucky to debut in the top 10 with this album, top 20 is even a stretch at this point. I am obviously going to buy this album and I know I’m gonna like it because I’m a big Ciara fan, it just sucks how this project went sour for her. I feel like this has been a complete repeat of what happened LAST TIME.

  74. Jamie December 3, 2010

I don’t mean any harm, but this album is pure garbage. It doesn’t even touch her past albums. Her voice is not strong on any of the songs, and is very displeasing to the ear. It also doesn’t help that the songs are mediocre–no substance, the lyrical content stinks, and are altogether not memorable.

  75. KELENDRIA ROWLAND December 3, 2010

Look she probs gunna flopp hard, not everyyone can be Kelly Rowland and score hit after hit, but GOOD LUCK cici!

    ~~
    Support Ms Kelly!

  76. ChrisJCRM December 3, 2010

Ppl need 2 stop comparing Ciara 2 Janet cuz this is just a disgrace. I heard snippets of the album on Amazon and Trent is rite. The singles is the strongest tracks on the album. When Ride came out back in April, everyone was talking about Ciara and that would have make perfect sense 2 drop the album. Now the album comes out nxt 2 weeks and she decides to promote. The fire been burn out baby girl. For the looks at it, BI look like it will flop harder than FR. I always taught Ciara would have become as big as Bey or even Janet esp going into the her evolution era but not anymore. Now that Britney annouced shes coming and Ga Ga soon 2 debute, hell even Bey, its over. O well at the end of the day, @ least she can still out dance everyone else!!!!

  77. cane December 3, 2010

prefer to wait and buy Briney’s album.
Heard she put all of her good effort on that epic album.
This gonna heat up the industry.

I don’t see any of struggling,…coz Britney, gaga and Beyonce deliver us with different gnre of musics. But for me,..Britney always give the fresh one rather than ‘years old’ music that Bee and Gaga bring on.

So i prefer to be with Britney even she need to lip-sync all over the place.
Who cares,…we just want a good music.

  78. Dave December 3, 2010

Sad how much her fans overseas support her than the ones in her own home country *smdh*. They truly “Ride” for her.

  79. Stacy December 3, 2010

Haven’t heard the album and I suspect 99% of the people commenting also haven’t heard the album so yall are in here discussing Trent’s opinion and not the actual music.

I’m buying Basic Instinct and I’ll formulate my own opinion , because mine is the only opinion that matters.

    December 3, 2010 at 4:37 am

Jazze Pha isn’t that good of a producer seriously how many hits has he produced and how many of them are actually good songs?…I hate when people act like if Ciara hook back up with him things will magically be amazing….IT WONT! She probably do even worse lol

If anything she needs to hook up back up with Lil John, Dre & Vidal, Bangladesh, Polow Da Don, and Soundz& Infinity for her next album. Maybe a song by Darkchild. If she did that and actually wrote MOST of each of the songs like she did on Goodies & Evolution then she would truly be back! But her letting Dream and other people do most of the writing she will still be stuck in the same boat”

I agree. All the producers you mentioned would have been great for her to work with. Her label put a lot of money into this album and it could have been spread to them producers instead of the ones she worked with. I like “Ride” and I think if she had done a less racier video for the song BET would have played it. The other singles that she had videos for seemed like her label’s desperate attempt to put out the existing effort instead of having Ciara record more songs.

Also, Jazze Pha is not a bad producer. He has talent. Any producer that has his type of talent that is not being utilized is bound to have a few hits ready for an artist like Ciara. He produced Goodies on her first CD and he could have produce another hot song for her (not an entire CD).

I don’t think this CD will make or break her career. Ciara can dance and carry a tune so maybe her next CD will be better. Her label seems to stick by their artists so I doubt she will be dropped if the CD flops.

  81. YOOS December 3, 2010

I do love Ci and all, but a flop I think, really enjoy the album, but the tracks, and most sound the same. Unfortunately i do not think she will do that well. Hope for a deluxeeee 🙂

  82. Max_Ciara December 3, 2010

hmm k, i kinda agreed with the review and I LOVE CICI TO DEATH, but i dont agree that we waited 4 more months for only 11 tracks(12 if bought off itunes) and how jive jus ignored speechless and jump right to gimme that.! and now gimme that not even chartin.! most of the songs are pretty gud i do agree that girls get your money is weak, but why didnt she put blauw, secret, im up in the bank and soo much more she coulda add. imeen freaking dirty money has lik 16 tracks and they ish got push back before for like 2yrs. This makes me soo made cuz i want the best for her she def. deserve it and for singles like whats my name to go numb 1 and gimme that doesnt makes me upset.! rihanna didnt do s*** but sit around and walk dwn the street, ciara f****** worked hard on dancing and outfits and errthang. she put soo much into that video and people dont care enough to support her. But its cool im fa Ciara all day even if she sell only 4 copies in the first week. She stays true to her self and never give up. s*** fantasy ride album is still doin better than sum of these so called artist who can sing better then her(i.e. mya, janelle monae, amerie, teairra mari, tyra b, n more.!) but i still support u cici and imma def. goin to but the album both hard copy and itunes.! Im hoping basic instinct sells $175,000-$225,000 in its first week.! and i kno its not gon be numba 1 cuz of micheal jackson cd but like top #3.! LETS GO TEAM CICI.!!!

  83. GangsterA December 3, 2010

i didn’t listen to the album but i agree with the release date augst was great and pepole were checkin for her now i don’t know cici i will listen to it before i buy it lets see if it worth buying

  84. BeyBeyBey December 3, 2010

    can’t wait!

  85. royalkev December 3, 2010

I honestly think people want to have a chance to say, I told you so! They eagerly anticipate seeing Ciara fail. It’s as if they want to punish her for not being able to control her, rather than see a worthy album perform well in it’s first week. I sense bitterness, because Ciara has so many scrutinizing everything she’s done in the past year on a personal level. Oddly enough it’s for all the wrong reasons. It’s so much resentment that it’s almost impossible for her to impress anyone, no matter how hot the album is. For some people, I don’t even think it’s about the music anymore. People hated the fact that she moved to Cali and became more “hollywood”, then people complained about her being too articulate(and thought she was being someone she’s not by speaking proper, instead of being proud of her growth). Then some people hate her choice of friends. Having an association with the Kardashians made so many people judge her. Also this thing that stuck with her throughout the year – was she’s unfocused and partying too much instead of promoting. Ciara could be a walking billboard for Basic Instinct and it still would not be enough.

…So what happens, she conjures up a well crafted album. If this was alot of other artist , it would have been the best sh*t ever. I don’t have any bias when it comes to music. A good song is still a good song, even if I hate the artist. It also doesn’t take long for me to know a good song. I heard the snippets and I’m certain that Ride, Yeah I know, Turn it up, Wants for dinner, Heavy rotation and I run it are solid and above average! Girls get your money is awful, You can get it – forgettable. Basic Instint, Gimmee dat and Speechless – average. This makes most of the album listenable. I’m sure this would meet most people standards, especially with all the crapy music that is out(from so many artist on a grand scale to a small one). It’s sad that she does getting the backing she deserves(not only from her label, but from her “fans”). I hope this does well, because so many are jumping on band wagons and running all the catch phrases of the year when it concerns Cici. She’s an underdog, but if anyone deserves a real shot it’s Ciara. The one thing I have always agreed with is, that this album may have had a great shot at success if it came out in August. Still, getting past that – and realizing that Ciara delivered with a great album, doesn’t make me want to penalize her. I wish her the best on 12-14-10.

  86. royalkev December 3, 2010

*** orrection: It’s sad that she DOESN’T get the backing she deserves(not only from her label, but from her “fans”). ****

  89. Yellow Gorillah December 3, 2010

I dont even know what to sayyy

Yes I also agree she should have released it in August when ride was hot then gimmie that as the second single do all the promo theeeeeen drop the album but nooo she had to release the album like 4 months later loooool I cant

I think it will Flop but I think it might be a good thing so it will make her wake up and she really needs to change records comanys jive just aint cutting it she needs new managment new producers and old producers and she might be ok =| but her dancing ————-> the rest

  90. RosaRubbel December 3, 2010

I really don’t know about this album! How long have her fans been waiting for this? Ciara was hot in April, when she released ‘Ride’, everyone was on the blogs etc. But now? This projected has been labelled as a flop since her pushback in August. December is by far the worst release date for her album, because there’s a lot of competition out there and Ciara is known for club anthems, which don’t really fit the winter, in my opinion.
I have to admit I was a fan again after ‘Ride’ & ‘Speechless’, but the wait has been too long & I think I’m not the only one who is over this project!

  91. rh December 3, 2010

i think her album is going to do really good she been promote a lot and yeah speechless number 1 on the radio and gimme dat was number 1 on 106 and park and yeah please don’t say negative dang about her .Basic instinct most deciated album to fans .so yeah watch the abulm do good ciara is going to shut all the haters up so watch her and shut up

  92. MissImpartial December 3, 2010

I can not get excited with Ciara’s new album as she has now been talking about this album for at least a year now. Artist should not be naming an album before a release date has been set and how can you release an album 3-4 months after your only successful single charted.

  93. lisa December 3, 2010

CIARA HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND SHE IS THE BEST DANCER I’VE EVER SEEN, SHE DOES IT NATURALLY LIKE NOBODY ELSE AND I’M GOING TO BUY 100 ALBUMS ON THE FIRST DAY FOR STOCKING STUFFERS FOR CHRISTMAS, WE CAN’T WAIT FOR DECEMBER 14TH 2010, LOVE YOU CIARA A FAN TO THE END!

THAT CRAZY BISH IS USING ALL HER TIME, MONEY AND RESOURCES HATING ON COMPETITION. IN REALITY SHE REALLY HAS NO SKILLS TO GO UP AGAINST TRULY GREAT ARTIST LIKE CIARA. THE FOOL IS PURELY INSANE.

  108. MissImpartial December 3, 2010

    @VOSHA

You can not blame Jive records for not promoting Blackout as Britney was going through a Breakdown during that time and as for Chris Brown he was never going to have big album after what happened with Rihanna.

He released the album to quickly. Jive would have promoted he massively as they had done with other albums of his.

As for Ciara I think Jive gave up on her that why they are not wasting so much money on her.
Ciara is doing a lot wrong with her career how can you let two people produce your entire album. Noone does that as this is quite risky. She should have worked with some of the people like Jazza Pha who produced her biggest hits. Or she should try to get herself a reality TV show.

  109. MissImpartial December 3, 2010

I mean all her song are the same I mean can you really say there is a huge difference between her song Gimme Dat, Work and Get Up.

She should sing about something different and stop using the same beats.

  110. Me December 3, 2010

And how can I hurt her career with stating my opinion it’s not like I own a media station. I am just saying she should do something different as what she is currently doing is not bringing her any sales or chart hits.

Grammy Award Winning, and multi platinum artist Ciara gets back to basics with Basic Instinct which features the new uptempo single “Gimmie Dat” which is at Australian radio now. The video directed by Melina and Ciara, showcases Ciara’s signature jaw dropping moves and feisty beats.

Initially heightening anticipation for Basic Instinct was the s***, sensual first single “Ride”. The mid-tempo track, produced by Tricky Stewart and The Dream, features frequent Ciara collaborator Ludacris, who adds a devilishly clever verse to the song. “Ride” was received well in the US with the single peaking at No. 3 on the Urban Mainstream chart. The sultry video-set off by Ciara’s unparalleled, lithe dance moves-boasts more than 15 million YouTube views.

  116. janie December 3, 2010

    NOW THAT IS GOOD ADVICE.

MANY STARS LIKE BRANDY, FANTASIA, TREY SONGZ, AND MONICA HAD TO FOLLOW THEIR CDS WITH TV SHOWS JUST TO SELL A MODEST NUMBER.

I’D LOVE TO SEE CIARA IN A TV SHOW. I FOLLOW HER ON TWITTER AND HER LIFE OF MODELING, SHOWS, AND TRAVELING ALL OVER THE WORLD IS A YOUNG GIRL’S DREAM LIFE. MEN FALL AT HER FEET. I’D LOVE TO WATCH HER GLAM LIFE ON TV.

  117. Keylaine December 4, 2010

@janie I doubt Ciara would ever do a Reality TV show. She is very private, Ciara is very good at only being seen when she wants to, most of the time when she isn’t working on a album or about to release it she’ll completely go off the radar. When she is working on one she only lets people see her shopping thats about it. I couldnt see her or Beyonce, or Ashanti or a few others with Reality TV shows only because of how private they are.

  118. cocoa49 December 4, 2010

If only her people would have let her drop the album in August. With Ride going big as it did she didn’t even have to drop another single. I was disappointed when i heard it was dropping the end of the year. I heard she is doing a couple of shows starting next week. Maybe this will help her some. Good luck to her

  119. cocoa49 December 4, 2010

Oh and i don’t think it will flop that bad. She may surprise yall and hit high numbers the first week.

  120. Jeannie December 4, 2010

real fans are pre-ordering on amazon

if nicki minaj with all her MASSIVE millions of dollars exposure, and being on EVERYONE CD could only sell 150 thousand then Ciara with her very limited exposure and marketing will be doing good if she sells 100,000. ciara has almost no presence in a major city like chicago with a large black middle class. i just left there. Ride was a major hit even when dirty BET banned it. WHEN SHE GETS WITH THE RIGHT RECORD COMPANY SHE GONE BLOW UP BIGGER THAN BEYONCE DID WITH SLEEPING WITH CAMEL AND SPENDING HIS MONEY ON DISTORTING THE SELLS.

Jive is not in to those 360 contract where has the record company gets 80 percent of what you earn, like most record companies. And artist on Jive label got to get out there and promote themselves. There is know buying up the artist albums are any of the luxuries that most record companies do to make their artist look banging.

With our a 360 deal you get little to none endorsement and the only time you are approached by endorsers is because you have a song they wish to use to sale their product and you just come along has the complete package.

I don’t know why Jive does the things that they do, but it has hurt Ciara and she deserves so much more.

  125. Rob December 5, 2010

  128. Marcus December 5, 2010

I’m disappointed… I’m almost certain Fantasy Ride had plenty of unreleased leftover material that could’ve been better suited for this Basic Instinct album. I’m not loving many of the snippets at all. She can not go back to the basics without pulling in the producers who gave her some of her biggest hits from the start: Jazze Pha, Missy Elliott, Polow Da Don, and Lil Jon. The-Dream has stale productions at this point. Ugh. I predict 40K first week sales. =/

  129. ABC December 6, 2010

The album is better the the review you gave

I agree with what ituneschat said on twitter, that you probably wrote the review based on the snippets not the actual album

  130. tones December 6, 2010

last time I checked critic reviews of albums didn’t matter: Chris Brown’s Graffit album has a score of 37/100 and is nomianted for 3 Grammys and Rihanna’s Rated R has a score of 76/100, MJB’s Stronger with Each Tear has a score of 75/100, Rick Ross’ Teflon Don has a score of 80/100 and The-Dreams Love King has a score of 77/100 and none of them were nominated for a single Grammy this year. For all the haters: Ciara has been promoting overseas that why she’s not in the US and she has like 6 or 7 TV appearances over the next week or so including a 106 & Park Takeover day, she’s promoted on BET, MTV, Twitter and on the radio and in several magazines. Even though Basic Instinct is expected to sell 90 – 125k in the first week, I’m pretty surer it’ll sell well overall, I’m pretty sure she’s gonna release You Can Get It, Yeah I Know, Heavy Rotation and Turn It Up as singles and based on the snippets, they all sound really good. But I bet the haters will buy the album just to say negative s*** about it. Basic Instinct in stores 12-14-10 #TeamCiara

I just felt that the album could a been a million times better. The production is just terrible, i mean come on now, the dream and tricky produced every song. The album just sounds like it’s lacking control and substance. The songs are not hits, its just album fillers. Ciara already doesnt have the best voice as it is and the songs doesnt capature the classic ciara that we all love from the goodies era. I was hoping she would leave the pop music in the basement and gear towards hip hop, R&b and crunk. Lil Jon, Jazza Pha, Polen De Lon, Missy Elliot, hell even Rodney Jerkins, sterotypes, and of course man hell timbland would have given her a good quality sound. The songs just dont add up to fill up a quailty album. the album has been pushed back way too many times and should have been released in october, poor promotion and poor choice of singles will turn this album into a flop, she will be a forgotten artist like ashanti , tweet , mya, saldy but true.

    boring album
needs better producers missy, jazza pha, rodney jerkins, polen, claude kelly, sterotypes, and timbland.
    more party ciara jams
    better promotion

First of all a label is only going to put money behind the artist if they know the artist can sale the album. That just goes to show you how much faith they had in their own artist. There was no need to put money behind promotion because the label knew ciara album was able to compete right now. Had they put more money into promotion and had ciara change up a style a lil might have made the sales a lil better. I use to be a big fan but Ciara is played out. Her last good album was evolution and to be honest it pissed me off cause there was only like 4 good songs. But i feel like ci ci has shown us all that she can do. And that queen of down south hip hop or what ever you call it , its a bit played out. Who cant pop and shake a lil ass! LOL, It’s time for ciara to stop all the damn dancing and focus on her vocals and s** appeal. Right now was not a good time to drop her album cause she cant not no way in hell compete with the big names out right now. I listened to her new album and she only has 3 good songs, and those include the tracks the Dream wrote and helped produce. time to LET IT GO CIARA.
