From The Vault: Blu Cantrell – ‘Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)’

Published: Sunday 10th Apr 2011 by Trent

This week’s From The Vault comes from one of the most notable 1-hit wonders of the US. Blu Cantrell released ‘Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)’ as the 1st single from her debut album, ‘So Blu’, in 2001. Written and produced by Dallas Austin, the song remains her only top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #2.

‘Hit ‘Em Up…’ was certainly an anthem for many in the early period of the last decade. The catchy melody of the chorus made it virtually inescapable in the summer of 2001 with Cantrell’s powerful vocals booming from every clothing store and car radio.

Cantrell may be a 1-hit wonder but she is certainly an exceptionally talented singer. Although, ‘Breathe (Ft. Sean Paul)’ topped the Official UK Singles Chart in 2003, whether she will be able to score another hit in the US, however, remains to be seen.

I remember this song/album I also remember around that time Blu Cantrell was upset b/c she felt like Beyonce was trying to steal her shine when she released “Baby Boy” ft. Sean Paul….I wonder if she’s still not a Beyonce fan LOL

Chick was certified crazy. Search the interview she did with Wendy Williams..and afer Beyonce released ‘Baby Boy’, she said Bey copied her because she said the word “breathe”. Lmaoo. Like really? but this was my song though..

@Mr.M Dangerously In Love Era >>>>>>>> Blu Cantrell career I remember Blu very well, she definitely could sing circles around most of the pop stars today and i was a fan. That all changed when she started throwing shade at Princess B but now QUEEN B, talking about how THE QUEEN was trying to be her and how she had Jay Z first. GIRL BYE! We see now who won that battle LMFAO. I hope she can make a comeback though, but u can bet she wont throw shade this time around, because BEYONCE is no longer the princess, shes THE QUEEN!

I had ‘So Blu’ & ‘Bittersweet’! She was so vocally talented! “I loved “Blu Is A Mood” from ‘So Blu’ and “Risk It All” from the ‘Bittersweet’ album; really timeless songs!

  17. True Blue April 10, 2011

LMFAO, she seriously accused Beyoncé of trying to copy her by collaborating with Sean Paul? And tried to rub it in her face by claiming to have had Jay-Z first? B****, bye! Truth to be told, I actually wish Jay stayed with Blu, cause Bey is waaaaay out of his league!

    Anyway, I loved this song.

  18. PAM April 10, 2011

    @TRUE BLUE, agree 100%.

  19. Vegas girl April 10, 2011

Chick has crazy vocals, played the dog s*** out of her 2nd album. Love, love her voice. I remember back in the day though I initially thought she sounded JUST like Faith Evans but I was wrong. So many great voices a while back ( faith, blu, Kelly price, Monica, brandy, mariah…. Too many to name). Boo ….now I’m kinda sad.

  20. iLoveXtina April 11, 2011

ooooh s***! this took me waaaaay back. I actually though Tweet sang this smh. This was my summer song!

Blu is talented and beautiful, her song was out way before Beyonce’s, so i don’t see how they had anything to do with each other. Of anything she was probably more or less bothered by her being with JayZ. Queen B whatever, that saying is tired. OnToTheNext alreadyyyyy………

  22. QueenofPopJanet April 11, 2011

I knew when I saw this on the front page that it would be only a matter time before Beyonce’s name found its way into the conversation. Okay, fine, Blu Cantrell is a bonafied “1 hit wonder.”

    But here me now…
I don’t give a motherfuck about how many more albums Beyonce sold, how many more hits she has had, or how much more famous she is. This one hit of Blu’s is better than *ANY* Beyonce (or Destiny’s Child) song, and Blu could literally sing Beyonce out of the building.

Sometimes talent real loses to clever marketing, and that’s what this is.

  23. Cheers (Drink to That) April 11, 2011

WOW, Whatever happened to her??? She just disappeared. I thought she might stick around for a little bit! But she has great vocals & she’s pretty. Dunno what happened!

  24. THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF POP April 11, 2011

@janet fan Girl martket my ass! Blu ass just got dimissed throwing shade at a successful singer and had only put out one successful song LMAO. Hunnie please sityoass all the way down, because that just your opinion, when it comes to songs and singing. YOUVE BEEN DISMISSED! GIRL BYE!

  25. JonathanGardnerTV April 14, 2011

OMG THIS WAS AND STILL IS MY JAM!

    GIRL CAN SAAAAAAAAAANG!

I HOPE SHE MAKES A BIG COMEBACK
