‘Next Lifetime‘ hitmaker Erykah Badu got the internet dragging of a lifetime when she incited stings from Beyonce‘s beloved #Beyhive over suggestions the music megastar swiped her beaded braid hairstyle for her March-released ‘Cowboy Carter‘ album artwork.
Albeit not the first time she ruffled the fan group’s wings for insinuating Bey stole her look, the latest accusation grabbed headlines as it got so bad Badu called out for help from Bey’s husband JAY-Z.
“Say something Jay,” she said at the time of the Beyhive backlash. “You gone let this woman and these bees do this to me?”
More recently Erykah was spotted at ‘The Breakfast Club‘ for the hit radio show’s Halloween episode where she recounted the frightful incident.
Look inside to see what she said that may have reignited #Beyhive fury.
While chatting it up with hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne tha God, and guest Lauren LaRosa, Badu reflected on the bout with the Beyhive from March.
“Where’s the Beyhive now,” she quipped before saying. “I ain’t seen the BeyHive in a long time. And I love bees. They don’t know I like it. I love bees. They’re my totem…They gon’ tear me up.”
Speaking more seriously later in the conversation, Erykah shared she “loved JAY-Z” and that Bey’s fans just didn’t get her “sense of humor” when she suggested the ‘Cowboy Carter’ creator was stealing her style [again].
When quizzed on her general belief about artists (not just Beyonce) copying her without credit, Badu gave a very diplomatic response.
“As much as we love our art, it doesn’t belong to us once it goes out in the world…You can’t manage what people are going to do with the art. You can’t manage whether they’re going to duplicate it, or do another interpretation of it, or just enjoy it, or use it as an inspiration. You can’t manage that, but you don’t have to remain silent about it,” she said before adding, “If it makes you feel a ways, you should say something about it.”
