Ouch! ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot & ‘Smurfs’ Suffer Lukewarm Box Office Openings

Once believed to be the summer’s most anticipated movies, ‘Smurfs’ and ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ may have added new chapters to their beloved film franchises over the weekend but moviegoers were seemingly unimpressed.

The battle of the reboots, last weekend’s box office (July 18- July 20) was dominated by reimaginations of well-known film franchises and characters.

Proving no match for the power of DC’s ‘Superman‘ (which soared to #1 at the domestic box office for another weekend) and the latest addition to the ‘Jurassic Park‘ franchise ‘Jurassic World Rebirth‘ (#2), the Jennifer Love Hewitt-led ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ slid into the #3 spot with a $13 million domestic opening.

The fourth installment of the ‘Summer’ series, the 2025 slasher flick follows 2006’s ‘I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer’ and stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, and Jonah Hauer-King alongside the 90’s original version’s leaders Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Brandy.

Falling in fourth place was the Rihanna-led ‘Smurfs.’

Opening to a tepid $11 million at the domestic box office amid mixed critical reviews, the animated movie features a star-studded cast that includes Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, Maya Erskine, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, and Jimmy Kimmel voicing the beloved characters.

I was excited about I know what you did last summer but this movie fell flat. Was good seeing Freddie and Jennifer but director/writer messed that story up I hate that they did this to a classic

I love IKWYDLS. No forced diversity in there and that’s why we want!💅🏽

I loved the IKWYDLS reboot. Great story, characters and thrills. It exceeded my expectations!

Gen Z account for the biggest percentage of movie goers these days. 90’s nostalgia just doesn’t hit them like it hits Millennials and Gen X-ers. So we probably can look for these flops to do better on streaming services. Meanwhile, Hollywood needs a new formula.

  6. RWT movie outgrossed Smurf’s opening weekend lmaoooo July 22, 2025

No one wanted to hear Rihanna’s deep auntie cigarette smoking voice in a cartoon movie. 🤢
