Despite being one of Pop’s stronger pieces, Christina Aguilera‘s 2010 effort ‘Bionic‘ found itself shunned and overlooked, as a result of the negative press the vocalist fell prey to at the time.
Failing to soar commercially, it would take two years for the album to earn the respect its currently being afforded, following Aguilera’s successful stint on ‘The Voice’.
Now, she has spoken openly on the era.
Her estimation below…
Speaking to Billboard:
“With Bionic I fully went in there with [the idea], “I’m going to experiment and not be commercial or pop.” I wanted to play with different sounds and textures of my voice while bringing an electronica feel to it because that’s what I was listening to a lot at the time. And it was a blast.
I can proudly say it was ahead of its time, to be honest. It wasn’t so commercialized. You had to really be a music lover, be a true fan of music and the love of being open to really appreciate that record. It’s just a special piece in my body of work that will forever live on. The older the record gets the more people will come to appreciate it actually and check it out.”
Her conversation with the publication also announce the name of a new song, which features on her forthcoming LP ‘Lotus’.
She announced:
“Absolutely. There’s a song called “Army of Me,” which is sort of a “Fighter 2.0.” There is a new generation of fans from a younger demographic that might not have been with me all the way but that watch me on the show now.
I feel like every generation should be able to enjoy and have their piece of “Fighter” within. This time, the way it musically came together it just felt right for this time and this generation. There’s always going to be a fighter in me getting through some obstacle and some hurdle.”
As we touched on here, ‘Bionic’ is anything but the ‘trash’ many Aguilera detractors would have the masses believe.
Of course, though the handling of ‘Not Myself Tonight’ did little to help cause either, ‘Bionic’s only fault is that it was released in a time where Christina was Pop’s public enemy #1.
Therefore, if she is to launch a tour in support of ‘Lotus’, we hope jams like ‘Woohoo’ and ‘Prima Donna‘ find themselves in the set list, and given the exposure that evaded them two years ago.

I love Bionic, people tend to say that an album was bad, just because it was not a success (as they likes to call it, a FLOP), honestly, i think she hasn’t done a bad album yet, all of her records are great, i know Bionic is not “Stripped” or “Back to Basics” but is a good album, even her first album was a Pop masterpiece that will always be remembered as one of the best records of her time. She is undoubtedly part of Pop Culture.

Same with Bionic, I heard the reviews & when I listened to it, because I bought it, I was like Meh. But when I sat down & gave it a good listen w/ an open mind, it was AMAZING! Christina hasn’t done a bad record, even Burlesque the Soundtrack was a slay to me. She’s a true artist & musical genius. You can be delusional & call her a flop because of one record, but you can’t deny all her success, her voice, & her amazing music. She’s above most artist, if you wanna call them that.

Bionic wasn’t that bad, i mean it went to no:1 in the UK so enough people purchased it, but i think that the peoblem is that is was too pop for Christina when people expected pop/r&b. This is exactly the same problem with Alexandra Burke, she lost fans due to singing pop when people wanted her to utalise her voice with more soulful music. Hopefully both wont be making the same mistakes with their next projects.

I don’t like when celebrities brag and make excuses about generally poor pieces of work with such over-inflated opinions about it. “Ahead of it’s time.” Where is this time-transcending piece on it? The album was full of immature lyrics about s** and showing off (Not Myself, Desnudate, Prima Donna, Woo Hoo, Vanity, Glam, S** For Breakfast etc). It was also (like the 2 previous albums) about 10 tracks too long! The Deluxe had better songs on it which made it far more interesting and enjoyable.
I LOVE music and being born in the early 80’s I know a good song/album when I hear one; when the lyrics, music, image and vocals are all on point. Xtina sounded rough on the record, the lyrics were too shallow, the music was just head-humping nonsense for much of it and her image (especially as a married mother) was off-putting in the “Not Myself” video.
When these artists can put out a Thriller/Off the Wall/Bad/Dangerous/History, Butterfly/Daydream/Music Box or a Rhythm Nation 1814 I’ll believe their masterpiece claims. Until then Christina Aguilera needs to STOP giving us BAD cabaret music (B2B), singing about s** for sales and screaming all over the place and deafening her fans into thinking it’s real singing.
However, I AM looking forward to “Lotus” and hoping she’ll channel some depth and meaning, not 22 tracks of “Cactus” vocals!

Just like high grossing films, great music is usually devoid of profanity, bad performances, gimmicks and tackiness [think Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Titanic and Matrix). There are some great elements in all Christina albums yet she hasn’t yet put together a great piece of work from start to finish unlike those people often compare her with (except Beyonce, although “4” was quite consistent). S** For Breakfast was a beautiful arrangement, but that title! Ugh! Looks like it belongs on the front cover of The Sun news paper. Songs like “What a Girl Wants”, “Nobody Wants To Be Lonely”, “The Voice Within”, “Hurt” and a few more show a great side to Christina. Maybe she should work with Herbie Hancock and other musical legends to help bring out her best, but she’s not the kind of person to take direction… oh well!

You failed to mention the best songs on the album: Lift Me Up, Stronger Than Ever, You Lost Me, Monday Morning, Bionic, etc, etc.
The album wasn’t just s** s** and showing off. It was a masterpiece that included a wide range of styles.

As I said, the deluxe tracks were better and more interesting than the forgettable B-Side sounding ones on the standard edition. This s** talk is the same thing that’s helped railroad Janet Jackson’s career over the past decade.
As for those songs you mentioned, I think they are good songs ruined by Christina’s singing. A ballad is a ballad, not a rock song. I lived with a MASSIVE Christina fan last year and heard them often. Her voice sounded awful in “Stronger Than Ever” almost like she’s drunk and “You Lost Me” and “Lift Me Up” lacked the subtlety ballads should have; it was just more of her belting. “Bionic” was disappointing, cheap, nursery rhyme sounding lyrics “Bionic, getcha supersonic ay!” or whatever it was.
A true masterpiece doesn’t need a deluxe because it is good all over and is a complete piece of work lacking nothing and needing nothing more added onto it (see MJ, Whitney, Janet, Stevie Wonder and Mariah). Good Pop/Dance record? Yes. Masterpiece? That’s really reaching.
She did say it was a playful record. As long as she acts mature in real life & takes care of her son, why does it matter if she has fun immature record. Lighten up, that’s the problem with society, so uptight about everything.

Hey BOB, Christina has much talent as she can sing, dance and songwrite. On a physical scale that’s actually more than Whitney and Mariah. However, Christina’s problem has been her execution of such.
Writing mature lyrics isn’t the problem. Think about it, when Madonna started her sexually explorative phase she was the only one really doing it. Then, although as a Christian I don’t condone it, it was revolutionary and somewhat intriguing. Christina on the other hand is giving us what we had been hearing for almost 2 decades by female rappers, girl bands and female artists; in short it was nothing new.
A good example of an album that contained a wide range of topics without having to be overtly suggestive in it’s playfulness is Michael Jackson’s “Bad”. There are themes of competition, “Bad” love, “Liberian Girl”/”I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, hyperactivity “Speed Demon”, crime & suspense “Smooth Criminal”, self improvement “Man in the Mirror”/”Another Part of Me”, groupies, “Dirty Diana”, relationship pursuits “The Way You Make Me Feel”/”Just Good Friends” and songs with dual meaning like “Leave Me Alone” which lyrically is about a woman but visually about the media. In fact, nearly all the short films for Bad told an additional story to the lyrics. All of this in 11 tracks! That’s extremely impressive. Many of these artists fail to be so broad, (take Beyonce for example who either sings about relationships or telling people women run the world).
You’re probably right about Stripped being her best though, as every single and video told a different story. She hasn’t grown artistically as much as she should have though. She moves from one genre to the next so quickly she fails to bring the previous audience along with her! True artists know how to keep all their followers interested.

Christina had a specific vision for Bionic and that vision got thrown away by her label who wanted her to go more commercial. You obviously haven’t listened to the songs that were put on the deluxe edition because none of them were about s** or showcased her vocals.
What song on B2B was about s**? The only one I remember is Nasty Naughty Boy. So if B2B was full of s** filled lyrics I’d like you show me receipts. Stripped had very nice sensual songs that you could view as too sexual but all in all, Christina music catalogue is very sincere and cemented. Michael Jackson had plenty of songs that were about s**, so did Janet, Madonna, Chef, David Bowie, Billy Idol etc… So before you single Christina out again for selling too much s**, look at the music acts that were at their peak during your generation as a t*** and young adult.

I have a feeling however that ‘Lotus’ will top ‘Bionic’…it may even be her best work in her career so far. She’s been recording for 2 years, she worked hard and she’s readying a truly diverse album, properly promoted and launched as well this time around.

I just want Xtina to offer great songs. You know, better than Your Body. That´s great for radio cos it doesn´t allow anything else anymore apart from pop and dance. It´ ssuch a good move. But after that I want the rest of the album to sound different. At least a big part of it. Xtina always has great songs on her albums. She cares about choosing good music among what producers have to offer. I don´t care that much about her vocals on those songs cos we know she sounds a mess half of the time (and stunning a few times too). But the songs she includes are what make her an interesting albums artist

It’s not that I didn’t appreciate “Bionic,” it just seemed a little oversaturated. There were so many tracks on there and I feel like if she cut it down a little the record would’ve flowed better and been a little bit more cohesive. “Elastic Love” and “Glam” were definitely stand out tracks. The ballads on the album stand as her best work to date IMO. My favorite album/era from her is “Back To Basics.” That music had a lot of soul and I loved the production because it touched on hip-hop elements and even jazz a little without coming off pretentious. She just seemed so comfortable with herself and was still s*** but classy at the same time. Sorry I’ll stop blabbing.

I didnt listen to the bionic album in it’s entirety so my opinion is null and void whether it’s trash or not. The songs I did hear tho I didn’t like. Not myself tonight was okay but it wasnt epic or making me raise a hair like her other songs on back to basic or stripped. I loved every song on stripped and back to basics was wonderfully done of an old jazz and swing type of era she had bought to modern day. I’ve liked the themes that Christina have bought to her albums so I hope this one will not be a bionic part 2. But something different to expect.

she gotta be one of the smartest and most devoted and articulated female artists ever , i liked “bionic” so much , you have “you lost me” , “lift me up” and other ballads for ballads lover , you have “i hate boys” . ” my girls” , “Monday morning” , “primadonna”, ” wooho” , etc .. for pop fans , you have ” birds of prey” , “not myself tonight” , “elastic love”for ppl who like something electronic in there ears and this is what she meant by “experimental” , bionic had everything a music lover will want in an album IMO. u don’t have to lie an album just cuz it is a success or because everyone liked it ! i liked “Rated R” when everyone trashed it , now all of a sudden after 3 years everybody says ” it is a classic” , ” that’s her best album” , etc ….
