Despite being nowhere near the Dolby Theater at the time Will Smith made headlines for slapping Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s hair at the Academy Awards Sunday night (March 27), August Alsina has seen his name mentioned by many as part of the ongoing discussion about the shocking incident.

The chart-topping R&B star, once a close friend of the Smiths, dominated headlines in 2020 after revealing he had an affair with Jada – an extramarital fling that not only popularized the term ‘entanglement’ but also ushered the Hollywood power couple into revealing their union was not conventional.

Regardless, critics still point to the embarrassing aftermath of the revelation as part of the frustration Will was carrying that ultimately made him explode on Rock at the OSCARs.

During his first apology for the assault, the 53-year-old – while accepting the first Academy Award of his legendary career – made clear the incident was out of character for him.

“I want to be a vessel for love,” he said before adding, “This is a beautiful moment. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father. But love will make you do crazy things.”

On Tuesday (March 29), August uploaded a lengthy message to Instagram about desiring to ‘televise and broadcast love.’  And while it was not immediately clear if the 29-year-old was intentionally referencing Will’s speech, commenters quickly drew the comparison.

The full caption reads:

Commenters felt the August post was also a subtle reference to the Smiths because of his mention of ‘healing,’ which comes just hours after Jada took to social media to say ‘this is a season for healing.’
