The lead single from Mariah Carey’s highly anticipated ‘Angels Advocate’ remix LP has finally surfaced. The ‘Angels Cry (Remix)’, which was supposed to have impacted radio on January 4th, features R&B crooner Ne-Yo. ‘Angels Advocate’ hits stores on February 23rd.

Although the track features identical productions to the original, Ne-Yo weaved his vocals and lyrics expertly into the arrangement and actually enhanced the already brilliant song. However, I would be lying if I said that I was not expecting them to recompose the entire track. As two of the industry’s premier songwriters, they had the opportunity to create some epic material. Either way, having had the experience of working with each other on this song, it would be interesting to hear what they might come up with in future ventures. Good stuff.

According to our friends over at the uber reliable Mariah Daily Journal, Mariah Carey is set to release ‘Angel’s Cry’ (Remix) featuring label mate Ne-Yo as the first single from her ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel’ remix LP. The song is set to go for adds on US radio on January 4th 2010.

Hmm…I’ll reserve judgement until hearing the actual song, however it goes without saying that there is a lot riding on this ‘remix’ (aka saving face) project – not least Mimi’s relevancy. Yes, she has a dedicated fan-base, yet as the sales-to-date of ‘Memoirs’ show, sometimes that just isn’t enough. Also worth mentioning, is the hilarity that is any suggestion that Mimi is beyond needing to sell anything or prove anything to anyone – which I’ve heard from a few. I’m afraid when you’re one of the world’s biggest stars and signed to a MAJOR label, you’re expected to bring in profit from your sales. Simple as. I strongly doubt Def Jam would be pumping money into her videos and promo, and not expect anything back. “C’mon son”! The industry doesn’t work like that.

Anyway, feeling I’ve slightly drifted off topic, I imagine this track will ‘surface’ any time from now. Mariah and Ne-Yo sure sounds like a great collaboration on paper. Here’s hoping it translates well on track.

Your thoughts?

Today saw the premiere of Ne-Yo’s video for ‘Never Knew I Needed’, his contribution to Disney’s animated movie ‘The Princess & The Frog: Tiana and Her Princess Friends’. Though I doubt this will be setting charts alight anywhere, hats off to Ne-Yo for expanding his market. The video itself is pretty cool too.

What do you think of the song / video?

Ne-Yo - 'Discipline' (Janet Demo)Some of you may recall Janet Jackson’s ‘Discipline’, the title track to her criminally underrated album of the same name. Well, the demo version of the song, performed by the song’s writer Ne-Yo surfaced today. It’s real interesting hearing his take (essentially the original) on the record, as he really seems to channel Janet vocally with his delivery.
Note: This is a demo and the lyrics are written for Janet to perform. No rumours or messiness folks LOL!

R&B songstress Brandy has been hard at work on her 6th studio album, with this new Ne-Yo collaboration ‘Decisions’ said to be the fruit of these new sessions. Some of you may remember Brandy saying in her interview with That Grape Juice earlier this year that she wanted to work with Ne-Yo, Tricky Stewart among others. Well, it turns out this song was penned by Ne-Yo and produced by Tricky.
About the cut itself, I’m really liking this one. While I feel ‘Human’ was the best way for Brandy to re-enter the music scene (a message driven record), it’s great to see Ms. Norwood return to her more commercial rootings and still churn out a winner. This really sounds great; both her and Ne-Yo’s voices mesh effortlessly and the production is hot. Great track.

Ne-Yo Covers 'Take A Bow' Ne-Yo stopped by the UK’s top Urban radio station 1Xtra earlier today to promote his upcoming ‘Year of The Gentleman’ LP. The talented singer/songwriter also performed a rendition of Rihanna’s #1 smash ‘Take A Bow’. I’m really liking his take, on the otherwise, so-so track.

Ne-Yo - 'Miss Independent'With R&B star Ne-Yo gearing up for the release of his third studio album ‘Year of The Gentleman’ (due August 5th), the LP’s second official single -‘Miss Independent’- has surfaced. While ‘Closer’ exhibited a more Euro-Pop sound, ‘Miss Independent’ is, no doubt, familiar territory for the singer/songwriter musically. The mid-tempo cut sounds like a progression of the sound Ne-Yo championed on his first (and IMO best) LP. Good stuff.

Ne-Yo - 'Trouble'Those awaiting the release of Ne-Yo’s third LP ‘Year of The Gentleman’ will be disappointed to learn that the album has been pushed back from its June 24th release to August 5th. I’m assuming Def Jam are going for the 2-single pre-album release strategy, as the set’s first cut ‘Closer’ seems to be slowing down on the charts (#54 on the Billboard Hot 100).
In any case, ‘Trouble’, which will feature on the record, should help ease the wait. The R&B/Pop/Dance fusion further embraces the sound the singer/songwriter channeled on ‘Closer’. Very ‘European’ sounding. With each track I hear from the set, I’m becoming increasingly more amped for what the record will be delivering. Good stuff.

With R&B star Ne-Yo’s ‘Closer’ burning up the airwaves in the US, it’s apt that the song’s video made its debut today. Evidently, someone’s been watching more than a few Michael Jackson videos, but it’s all good. I’m really liking the song and feel the video compliments it well. ‘Closer’ is featured on Ne-Yo’s third studio album ‘Year of The Gentleman’, which will be released on June 24th.

What do you think of the video?

Ne-Yo - 'Let's Just Be' As Ne-Yo readies his third studio album ‘Year Of The Gentleman’ for a June 24th release (via Def Jam), a new track from the set has surfaced. ‘Let’s Just Be’ sees the singer/songwriter re-embrace a more smooth R&B sound (in comparison to the album’s material heard thus far). The solid mid-tempo cut is laced with Ne-Yo’s trademark melodic harmonies and compliments the album’s title well. Still, I’ve yet to be ‘Wowed’ by anything I’ve heard thus far from the project. Here’s hoping the best is yet to come.

Ne-Yo - 'Used To You'As Ne-Yo preps the release of his third studio album, ‘Year of The Gentleman’ (due June 24th), new material from the anticipated set has surfaced in the form of ‘Used To You’. With its trademark Ne-Yo harmonies and it’s, somewhat, 80’s throwback inspired production, this seems like a sure-fit for the direction the singer has thus far showcased for his upcoming LP. Saying that, the song, is by no means, single-worthy, and I’m hoping this is either a sample of what he’s working on or solely an album cut.

Ne-Yo - Closer R&B star Ne-Yo is currently working on his third studio album. This new track ‘Closer’, which surfaced today, is said to be first single from the LP.
Upon listening to this, I was a little surprised. On the uptempo track, Ne-Yo fuses Euro-Dance/Pop with R&B, serving up a pretty solid song in the process. Considering the creative and sales slump he saw with his last album ‘Because of You’, I’m hoping this ‘different’ sound here is indicative of a new direction he’s venturing into musically.
