Summer may be well upon us worldwide, but nowhere brought the heat more than the first-ever Yam Carnival in London.
The inaugural installment of the extravaganza took place at Clapham Common and was attended by thousands of music lovers who were treated to flavorsome performances from the likes of Davido, Kehlani, Yemi Alade, NSG, and King of Dancehall Beenie Man.
As the Jamaican royal triumphantly informed the capacity crowd, the showing was his first major stage performance in the UK for 13 years — and he did not disappoint. No hit was left untouched and fans lapped up resonating renditions of bops such as ‘Who Am I,’ ‘Girls Dem Sugar,’ as well as ‘Rum & Red Bull.’
Backed by dynamic dancers, Ms. Banks blazed with ‘Dip,’ ‘Snack,’ and more.
And while Kehlani’s set was shorter than intended, she did not disappoint. Brief but sweet, the GRAMMY nominee wowed with her silky tone during her assured showing; one which saw her in full command of the capacity crowd.
The event’s undeniable main attraction was Afrobeats titan Davido, who magnetized the largest audience of the festival.
Powering through colossal classics such as ‘If’ and ‘Fall,’ the Nigerian superstar enchanted the audience with potent stage presence and zeal that captured the essence of the entire day.
For us, and the thousands in attendance, the Yam Carnival was the sweetest of treats.
