After landing a top 30 hit with the Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign-assisted ‘Swalla’ in 2017, Jason Derulo – instead of following with news about the tune’s official parent project – opted to crank out more songs with no report of what larger body of work the tracks were tied to.

As we reported here, that changed last month when the stage blazer took to Instagram to confirm his new album – the follow-up to 2015’s ‘Everything is 4’ – would arrive November 8.  Originally christened ‘777,’ the opus, now titled ‘2SIDES,’ is actually listed on streaming and digital outlets as a pair of EPs (contrary to previous reports).  Its first installment, which debuted today, houses a six song track list.

And, while it only boasts rapstress Stefflon Don as a feature, the effort does not include any of the standalone tunes Derulo’s dropped over the last two years.

Will it be just what the Miami born singer needs to reignite Stateside interest in his music career?  Listen inside and let us know:

December 20 marks the date the star-studded film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber‘s Broadway classic ‘Cats’ pounces into a theater near you.

Starring Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, James Corden, Rebel Wilson, and many more familiar names, fans of any of the aforementioned can expect to see much of them in the coming months hitting the promo trail in support of the Tom Hooper-directed flick.

The latest in a string of visuals to that point comes in the form of a behind the scenes teaser released Monday (September 9).  Highlighting the fancy feline footwork of the film’s stars, the clip shows the work that went into conditioning the actors for their portrayals of cats.

Castmate Corden echoed the sentiment:

“You’re gonna take a load of people, and they’re going to pretend to be cats,” he says in the new teaser. “Like, if you just say it out loud, it’s bonkers. But that’s where the most fun happens, really.”

As streaming continues to anchor itself as the primary means of music consumption, more pressure than ever is being placed on artists to deliver big numbers on-demand.

Indeed, whereas streams of music video and audio used to serve as an additive measure to the more dominant digital downloads, the roles have reversed.

This has caused for the birth and boom of artists whose success is fuelled primarily by streaming such as Migos, Cardi B, and Lil Uzi Vert. It’s also helped boost acts whose traditional sales aren’t quite blockbuster ala Rihanna. There’s evidence too to suggest that it could very well have been a catalyst for established winners such Beyonce pivoting towards visual-driven roll-outs.

However, streaming hasn’t been as advantageous to all.

See, part and parcel of the streaming push is the rise and prominence of VEVO, whose “machine” like size and reach have allowed them to help build huge followings for the acts who use their platform. These artists have typically been signed to labels of VEVO partners such as Sony Music, Universal Music, and select indie entities.

This, in effect, has made it quite difficult for many acts not in said equation to compete. For, they’re left to use “normal” YouTube channels (often relegated to drive behind the scenes clips and the like) to push their actual music videos. The end result being lower views than their VEVO counterparts. This has especially been the case for indie talent as well Warner/Atlantic acts – with the few exceptions of the latter being Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, and Jason Derulo.

It’s also put acts who’ve, for example left Sony for Warner, in an odd position. Because in jumping ship, they give up use of their VEVO (and the millions of subscribers accrued) to begin dropping audio and video on their standard YouTube channels. Most of which are often much less populous.

That all looks set to change, though, following a major new announcement from YouTube.

#Barbz in need of a Nicki fix have gotten more than their fill in 2017.

The rapstress, who not only set but also extended a historic lead among women on the Hot 100 earlier this year, is looking to ensure none of her closest competitors come anywhere near threatening the record.  And, after one listen of ‘Skrt On Me,’ her brand new collabo with Calvin Harris, her mission will most likely be accomplished.

Found on the famed DJ/producer’s star-studded ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1’ (in stores June 30), the sexy Summertime single sees the Trinidadian beauty tap into her island roots over a soca/dancehall-inspired instrumental.

This year’s Billboard Music Awards may have drawn its lowest viewership in 5 years, but that certainly didn’t stop those who did tune in from showing love to some of the performers on the show’s star-studded roster.

With show-stopping performances from the likes of Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Cher, and Celine Dion, the awards ceremony’s showings not only dropped jaws, but – if a recent report is to believed – also encouraged viewers to drop coins in support of their favorite acts.

According to Billboard:

The 2017 Billboard Music Awards prompted a 37 percent sales gain for the songs performed on ABC’s May 21 broadcast, according to Nielsen Music.

The songs performed on the three-hour show – not including newly released tracks from Camila Cabello and Miley Cyrus – sold a total of 332,000 downloads in the week ending May 25. That sum was up 37 percent compared to the tunes’ collective sales haul in the previous week: 243,000.

Some notable increases include:

  • Bruno Mars’ “Versace on the Floor” (up 395 percent to 7,000)
  • Drake’s “Gyalchester” (increasing 158 percent to 7,000).
  • Cher’s “Believe” jumped 499 percent (to 4,000 sold)  while “If I Could Turn Back Time,” zoomed 578 percent (to 4,000).
  • Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” nets a 393 percent sales gain (sold 6,000 downloads in the latest tracking frame)
  • Jason Derulo’s “Swalla,” featuring Nicki Minaj (30,000; up 19 percent)
  • Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill” (30,000; up 35 percent)

Fifth Harmony lead a star-studded line-up of artists tapped to perform on the 2017 Good Morning America Summer Concert Series.

The Pop quad – who are gearing up to release new music – have been announced as one the major names set to rock the annual extravaganza, which takes place each Friday over the next few months.

With all eyes and ears on the group following the departure of Camila Cabello (who’ll be performing on the TODAY Show’s rival series), it would appear fresh material is nigh. For, rarely will an act perform on the platform without new music to plug.

The ladies will be gracing the GMA stage on June 2nd – by which time member Normani’s high profile stint on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ will have wrapped.

In any case, other talent on the bill include Jason Derulo and Big Sean.

Your thoughts?

Nicki Minaj entered history books this month for earning the ‘most Hot 100 entries among women’ when her three scorching new singles – ‘No Frauds,’ ‘Changed It,’ and ‘Regret in Your Tears’ – all made their respective splashes on the chart.  Granted, without the aid of a music video the trio of tunes don’t seem to be faring well (as we predicted here), but never fear, as this week’s refreshed charts have demonstrated she is still making her mark.

After the debut of the colorful Jason Derulo video for ‘Swalla,’ the diva has been given yet another taste of Hot 100 glory.  The result?  An extension of her already historic lead amongst females.

Tuck inside to find out where ‘Swalla’ made its debut on this week’s single charts:
