Jhene Aiko keeps the ‘Chilombo’ party blazing with the release of the video for ‘Tryna Smoke.’

The harmony-heavy jam has long been a favorite from the Platinum-certified LP and has officially received the visual treatment after calls from fans.

Like much of Aiko’s output, the clip makes no apologies for its simplicity – which compliments the song in earnest.

Its arrival follows the videos for ‘P*ssy Fairy (OTW)’, ‘None of Your Concern (ft. Big Sean),’ and ‘A&B.’

From The Vault hits you with yet another classic this. Today’s pick is Ne-Yo’s game-changing ‘So Sick.’

The second single off the singer-songwriter’s 2005 debut ‘In My Own Words,’ the track was a worldwide phenomenon and helped establish Ne-Yo not only as a leading Pop/Urban act but one of music’s most notable writers. Its production was handled by Norwegian hitmakers Stargate and its melody-heavy rooting ushered in a new soundscape in the mainstream.

Inspired by a difficult break-up, ‘Sick’ sees the lovelorn singer lyrically lamenting over his heartache.

This song is considered the star’s breakout single, having reached #1 both in the US and the UK.

Although an initial visual was filmed for the track, another was shot by director extraordinaire Hype Williams.

The fresh iteration, which skewed more seasonal and embraced Williams’ then-prominent aesthetic (see: split screen), was shot in the snowy mountains. Perhaps as a means of capitalizing on the Fall/Winter window and its ballad friendly climate.

What a time!

Not since Ne-Yo (and Chris Brown) has there been a male artist who came out swinging like this from the get-go; even Bruno Mars had to secure spots on well-placed features before the launch of his official solo career.

Looking back, Mr Smith’s success was most certainly justified. Upon hitting the scene, he delivered a genuine dose of freshness. He veered away from the Michael Jackson formula that Usher, Timberlake and Brown were so reliant on at the time. Instead, his proposition was one anchored in the production of melodic, emotional, and lyrically engaging radio jams that were paired with striking visuals. A modern Babyface, if you will.

We can only hope he has as much longevity as his predecessor.

Ne-Yo, we salute you!

‘Good Man,’ the seventh official LP from R&B crooner Ne-Yo, may be the first project of his prized discography to miss the top 10 upon its debut (click here to read more), but that certainly hasn’t stopped Grammy-winner from showing off some of its gems on the promo trail.

Limiting most of its promo to radio, print, and online to date, the 38-year-old took to the late night circuit courtesy of a visit to ‘Jimmy Kimmel’ this week to give televised performances of new tunes ‘Push Back,’ ‘Apology,’ and ‘Nights Like These.’

As a songwriter and performer, R&B crooner Ne-Yo‘s run of back-to-back hits in the noughties almost knew no equal.  Debuting atop the Billboard 200 with his debut LP, ‘In My Own Words’ (2006), his presence on the album charts in the decade that followed – despite varying degrees of success – still saw each of the 5 projects that succeeded ‘Words’ premiere in the tally’s top 10.

His latest effort, ‘Good Man’ (released June 8th), is unfortunately unable to boast the same.

Kicked off by a number of teaser tunes before seeing its title track and the Bebe Rexha/Stefflon Don-assisted ‘Push Back’ named its official launching singles, the effort admittedly went to chart battle with little fanfare – especially compared to antecedent albums.

That absent buzz, coupled in a week dominated by news surrounding the releases of Dave Matthews Band and Kid Cudi & Kanye West‘s first joint album respectively, saw ‘Good Man’ pushed back to a much lower entry point on the Billboard 200.  Its debut not only comes as Ne-yo’s first project to miss the top 10 upon its release, but the entire top 30!
