So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll turn the dial back to 2005 and press play on Madonna‘s disco-flavored comeback hit ‘Hung Up.’  The lead single from her 10th studio album, ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor,’ the tune – which samples ABBA‘s 1979 ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ – was written and produced by the Queen of Pop herself (with a little help from Brit-born producer/songwriter Stuart Price).  Unveiled at a time where hip-hop and Urban-flavored offerings were dominating the charts like never before, ‘Hung Up’ – drenched in disco – was not only a risk due to its sonic distance from mainstream music, but also because Madge was having to prove herself a viable seller following the failure of 2003’s ‘American Life.’

The risk later proved a lucrative one.

Debuting at #20 this week in 2005, the song would eventually go on to peak at #7 (giving her Madgesty her 36th top 10 single), earn platinum status in the U.S., and lead its parent album to #1 on the Billboard 200!

As we get our life to ‘Hung Up,’ you should look under the jump to see who joined the ‘Jump’ singer in the top 25 this week that year:

This week we’re getting everything we need and more from ‘Everything’ – the third single from Mary J. Blige‘s 3x platinum third studio album ‘Share My World.’  The Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced cut, which famously samples ‘You Are Everything’ [The Stylistics], was accompanied by one of the Grammy winner’s most memorable visuals – a Hawaiian themed clip helmed by hit video director Hype Williams.  Helping it reach its Hot 100 peak of #24 this week 19 years ago, the song is an enduring fan favorite from Blige’s catalog and is undoubtedly a “must hear” on her ‘King & Queen’ tour with fellow R&B royal Maxwell [click here to read more] .

Thrilling new music isn’t the only art Lady GaGa has been working on recently.

For, blossoming into an unstoppable force is her relationship with Ryan Murphy‘s ‘American Horror Story’ which reached a sweet high after she won the ‘Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film’ Golden Globe for her role in its ‘Hotel’ tale.

With this in mind, can Murphy be blamed for calling on her to return to his ‘Horror’ for its next season?

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll jet back to ‘I Believe’ – the inspirational inaugural release of 2004 ‘American Idol’ winner Fantasia Barrino (known mononymously today).  Launched this week 12 years ago, the tune made an impressive debut at #1 on the Hot 100 – standard fare at the time for winners of the juggernaut reality singing competition.  Temporarily disrupting the reign of the year’s biggest success story – Usher (and the hits found aboard his blockbuster album ‘Confessions’) – ‘Believe’ only lasted atop the singles chart a week before the Grammy winning crooner reclaimed the spot.

To date, the soaring single may be songbird’s only flight to the Hot 100’s perch, but in 2016 it’s clear the purpose it served:  to introduce the world to the magnificent vocalist that is Fantasia.  Today, unlike many of her fellow ‘Idol’ alums, the world is still singing her songs (and her praises).

Rewind with us back to 2004 where it all began for the North Carolina-born beauty:

This week we try (and fail) at doing our best hip roll to Shakira‘s hit single ‘Hips Don’t Lie,’ featuring Wyclef Jean.  Though this week in 2006 brought with it the song’s dethronement from the top of the Hot 100 by the year’s ‘American Idol’ winner Taylor Hicks, by the time he hopped over ‘Hips’ to occupy the tally’s perch, the damage had long been done by the Colombian beauty.

Topping the charts in over 50 countries worldwide during its prime, ‘Hips’ lent Shakira her first and only #1 single (to date) on the Billboard Hot 100.  Going on to sell nearly 20 million copies, the song was not only the most successful release of 2006, but still reigns as one of the best-selling tunes of all time – thanks in no small part to a rocking video that featured the return of hip-rolling choreography that brought Shaki to U.S. fame a few years prior (see: ‘Whenever, Wherever’).

Tuck in below to see if any of your faves from today can be spotted on the Hot 100’s lineup this week 10 years ago:

Welcome to a special edition of Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature carved out to take you on a journey back into TV and Film’s past.

Today, to celebrate the life of the late African-American entertainer Prince, we make our way back to December 10th 1999, the day on which the performer bared all on life, love, music and religion in an interview with CNN‘s Larry King.

Much to the delight of his supporters, the conversation saw them mine the guarded entertainer’s changing mind as he promoted the LP ‘Rave UN2 The Joy Fantastic’, offering them what stands as an undeniably unforgettable interview.
