Usher has unwrapped the self-directed video for ‘I Cry.’

And it’s a family affair, because the singer’s sons Usher V and Naviyd contribute graphics to the visual (under their alias Dem Raymond Boyz).

Speaking on his rationale for releasing the emotional song, Usher said:

“This song was inspired by wanting to teach my sons that it is ok for a man to feel emotions deeply and to cry. Like many men, I was raised to believe that we have to be “tough” and not show our vulnerability, which I don’t want to teach them. While I was shut in during the pandemic and watching the death of George Floyd, the ongoing slaughter of Black men and women, the protests and the events that unfolded, I became very connected to the wider universal feeling of hopelessness. Like many, I grew increasingly frustrated by how slow things have been to change.  I became very depressed thinking about all the sons who have lost their fathers to police brutality, social injustice and violence; the daughters and mothers too. So I returned to this song and realized it was intended for this time, so I finished it and here it is.”

Today, we revisit the life of Lena Horne.

Born on June 30th 1917, the entertainer was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant and was the descendant of an enslaved Senegalese girl as well as the seventh vice President of the United States John C. Calhoun according to some reports.

Her uncle, Frank S. Horne, would go on to become adviser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and raised her between 1927 and 1929. Undoubtedly inspired by her family’s rich legacy, Horne would go on to carve one of her own in the fall of 1933 when she launched what would become a groundbreaking career.

Join us below as we revisit some of her best and brightest moments.
