Scribbled in history books for its fair share of good and awesomely bad reasons, 2017 brought with it some of modern music’s most memorable moments.  Now, as the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on our favorite happenings that rocked – and to some degree reshaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.

Next, we reflect on the celebrity divorces and breakups that sent headlines into a spin.  From Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill to Janet Jackson, Tamar Braxton & Vincent Herbert, and the [ongoing] fallout from Mary J. Blige‘s 2016-announced divorce, celebrity splits ignited many-a-story on That Grape Juice this year.

Tuck in below for the year’s highlights:

The visual journey Kendrick Lamar has taken his fans on with his new album ‘DAMN’ has been stellar to say the least.

Today, another Dave Meyers-directed piece joins the family before the year’s end.

What for? The song ‘LOVE.’

Give me a run for my money
There is nobody, no one to outrun me
(Another world premier!)
So give me a run for my money
Sipping bubbly, feeling lovely, living lovely
Just love me
I wanna be with you, ayy, I wanna be with
I wanna be with you, ayy, I wanna be with
I wanna be with you

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll shake things up with ‘Milkshake,’ the first single from Grammy-nominated Urban alternative artist Kelis‘ tertiary album, ‘Tasty.’  Written and produced by The Neptunes (Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams), the tune was originally pitched to pop superstar Britney Spears but was passed on by her team in favor of other cuts that lined the ‘In the Zone’ album (click here to read our ode to that project). Landing right in the lap of singer/songwriter Kelis – who was still reeling from the commercial failure of her sophomore set, ‘Wanderland’ – her recording of ‘Milkshake’ looked to be just what the doctor ordered for her career.  Going on to become her signature song for its tongue-in-cheek lyrics and delectable instrumentation, late 2003 saw the tune quickly make its way up the Hot 100 ladder and eventually peaking at #3 this week that year.

To date ‘Milkshake’ remains her best-selling single and only release to reach the top 10 on the tally (let alone the top 5).  Join us as we travel back 14 years ago to a time when Kelis brought all the boys to the yard with this infectious bop:

One of the acts hoping to benefit from his midas touch is Epic Records label-mate Jennifer Lopez.

Currently cooking up Spanish and English language albums, J.Lo hit the studio with Khaled – who seemed even more excited to be working with her.

See what he had to say about the partnership below, where more pics await…

Rihanna has barely touched a stage since wrapping her ‘ANTI World Tour.’

Indeed, in the time since the troubled trek, she’s busied herself with successful ventures such as Fenty Beauty and her Puma line. She’s also kept visibility in music by way of high-profile collaborations with the likes of DJ Khaled, N*E*R*D, and Kendrick Lamar.

Tonight, RiRi teamed with the latter to make her grand return.

She appeared at his annual TDE Holiday Concert (which is also a toy give-away).

Together they performed their hit ‘Loyalty,’ while Rih went on to rock the crowd with more magic – such as ‘Wild Thoughts’ and ‘Lemon.’

JAY-Z‘s candid cadence on new album ‘4:44’ has earned him praise aplenty – including 8 nominations at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

The LP resonated with many thanks its lyrical truth on tracks such as ‘Smile,’ which has now received the video treatment.

Jigga’s mother Gloria Carter joins him on the song; apt as he uses the length and breadth of the cut to shine light on her story.

From raising he and his siblings to finding love with a woman.

It’s a narrative the rapper captures well in track’s accompanying the visual (featuring Gloria). After an initial TIDAL roll-out, it’s now available via VEVO. Watch after the jump…

Well, wonder no more. Because the official ‘Camila’ tracklist was just unwrapped.
