Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll do ‘Doo-Wop (That Thing)’ – the debut solo release from former Fugees frontwoman Lauryn Hill.  Launched late October 1998, the tune – written and produced by Hill – became the first debut single of any artist in history to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 (where it was found this week that year).  A signature of the singer’s for its hard-hitting subject matter cloaked in a sonic fusion of Motown-inspired doo wop and hip hop, the song went on to Gold status before earning a few golden Gramophones at the 1999 Grammys – Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance specifically.  Helping lead its parent album, the iconic ‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ to whopping sales of nearly 20 million worldwide, it stands today as one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Over the course of Janet Jackson‘s illustrious career, the Queen of Pop has been an ardent advocate for the LGBTQ community.

It’s fitting then that the ‘Feedback’ singer was honored with the #OUT100 Music Icon Award.

The elaborate ceremony, which was was put on by Out Magazine, took place at the Altman Building in New York last night.

Glowing in fierce fine form, the 51 year old posed it up on the arrivals carpet and gave an impassioned speech thanking the community for their fearlessness.

March 2017 saw the self-proclaimed Queen of Rap Nicki Minaj dethrone Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin for the Billboard Hot 100 throne. 

Surpassing the R&B legend’s whopping 73 career-long entries on the tally with her three songs ‘No Frauds,’ ‘Changed It,’ and ‘Regret In Your Tears,’ Minaj left Franklin and her nearest competitors – Taylor Swift and Rihanna – in the dust among females [on that particular tally]. The 8 months that followed only cemented the rapstress’s place in history books as she added charting singles with the likes of Jason Derulo, Katy Perry, Yo Gotti, Future, and more to her Hot 100 resume.

Fast forward to this week, the Harajuku Barbie hits another milestone as her contribution to ‘Motorsport,’ her newest tune with rising rapstress Cardi B and hip hop chart-toppers Migos, sees the Grammy-nominated femcee nab another top 20 – a feat that makes her the first female artist in history to enter 80 charting titles on the singles chart.
