As we recounted here, R&B bad boy Chris Brown’s 2016 was a crazy year thanks to a number of highly publicized altercations, alleged assaults, and the like.  Now, barely a week into the new year, it appears the Grammy winner is set to have 2017 follow suit.

His ongoing beef with rapper Soulja Boy has been a rollercoaster to say the least, one many thought had come to a halt when the ‘Crank That’ hitmaker cranked out an apology last week.  Well…that was then.

With a celebrity boxing match scheduled between the two (Floyd Mayweather training Soulja and Mike Tyson in talks to train Brown), the ‘Run It’ singer reportedly ran to the gym to let off some steam on the basketball court when an altercation allegedly took place between him and its manager.  Needless to say, it didn’t end well for Breezy:

Following a slew of statements from manager Stella Bulochnikov (and clap backs from the production team at Dick Clark), Mimi has issued her own response.

Today’s From The Vault pick comes courtesy of a boyband who somehow managed to leave a mark in the masses’ minds despite their short-lived stint at the top of the charts.
This week we give you B2K’s ‘Bump Bump Bump.’

The track served as the launching single from the group’s sophomore set ‘Pandemonium,’ which was released in late 2002. As with most of the set, it was written and produced by the Pied Pipper himself, R. Kelly, and benefited from a guest verse from Diddy – or P.Diddy as he was known at the time.

A post-00’s serenade of sorts, the track sees lead Omarion set his sight on one girl, trying to make her his “main squeeze.”

Clearly the group’s breakthrough as well as well as their signature single, it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went on to become a worldwide hit peaking at #4 in Australia, #7 in France and entering the UK Top 20.

************

The song’s accompanying video was directed by Erik White and presented the quad dancing in colorful rooms with Diddy and lady dancers shaking it for the camera. You know the drill, a classic 00’s Urban male visual.

Though already blatant at the time, looking back something doesn’t feel right about the way Omari is apportioned the spotlight in this video. A practice that was essentially the case in most of the band’s offering’s more broadly.

Still, it didn’t stop legions of loyal fans lapping up all things O, J-Boog, Lil Fizz, and Raz B. Even if only for a short time.

************

Watching this reminds that we’d like to see update of the R&B boyband formula. As much as we reminiscence fondly on the likes of B2K and groups which came after them, the truth is that this would never fly in 2017.

We can’t wait to see what a new age boyband would look and sound like. With music, fashion, and “masculinity” defined altogether differently to what it was a decade + ago, it’d be interesting to see how the concept will have evolved.

Aside from his ostentatious presence on his social media and his collaboration on DJ Khaled’s ‘Do You Mind,’ August Alsina’s musical efforts have been moderately subsided. That is until now.

The New Orleans crooner returns with new material, which sees him race to the front of the line of acts hatching freshness in 2017. Interestingly titled ‘Drugs,’ the cut sees the 24-year-old profess his obsession with a woman over a sultry slow-churning beat.

‘Queen of Gospel’ Shirley Caesar received a royal backlash on Twitter this week after indirectly throwing her support to fellow gospel hitmaker Kim Burrell after the latter was slammed for a fiery anti-LGBT sermon.

As Burrell continues to lose everything from endorsements to promotional spots, Caesar – probably fearing the same was forthcoming – quickly tried to clarify her stance on the LGBT community by taking to Facebook to issue a statement.

Asserting the viral clip of her speaking was “taken out of context,” tuck in below to the gospel legend claim the true intent behind words:

Vivica A. Fox hit the promo trail hard this week in support of her ‘Magic Mike’-inspired reality show which launched on Lifetime this week.

Titled ‘Black Magic,’ the series sees Fox put her name and reputation on the line to audition and create an all-male urban exotic dance group with hopes of getting a Las Vegas residency.  Chronicling the mens’ voyage from the rehearsal hall to the stage, the show has already courted a bit of controversy thanks to some off-putting comments by Fox regarding its target audience (read more on that here).

As that subsides, if you’re curious to see how many people tuned in to catch the muscle bound hunks on January 4th at 10/9c, tuck in below:

The L’s just keep getting handed to ‘Victory’ singer Kim Burrell.

The embattled gospel singer, whose anti-LGBT sermon from last week landed her in hot water with the community and its supporters, is continuing to see endorsements snatched from her.  After learning her appearance on ‘Ellen’ had been cancelled, the revered songstress learned her radio and television programming had been snatched from their respective points of air.

As if that wasn’t enough, yesterday she was greeted with news from BMI that she’d been uninvited from an awards ceremony honoring songwriters.

Burrell’s backlash has no end in sight:
