Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature carved out to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious past.

Today, we revisit 1972 to celebrate ‘Lady Sings the Blues’, the Billie Holiday  biographical drama loosely based on her 1956 autobiography.

Starring Diana Ross, the movie told Holiday’s painful tale following her passing in 1952 and saw Ross portray the performer with support from her co-stars Richard Pryor, Billy Dee Williams, Virginia Capers and Paulene Myers.

The movie stood as one of many film projects launched to propel Ross into Hollywood and was nominated for five Academy Awards after picking up $19,726,490 at the Box Office with support from a $14 million budget.

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history

This week we’ll revisit ‘Lady Marmalade’ – the colossal Missy Elliott-produced remake of Patti Labelle‘s 70s hit.  Featuring the Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, P!nk, and Mya, the unexpected quartet boosted the tune to the top of the charts this week in 2001 and kept it there for 5 weeks.  ‘Marmalade’ was so successful it not only topped 2001’s year-end charts as it reigned as the year’s best-selling release, it went on to garner a Grammy for the ladies and remain the highest selling releases from Lil Kim and Mya’s overall catalogue (while P!nk and Aguilera would go on to earn even higher accolades in their respective careers).

Strut down memory lanes with us as we press ‘play’ on the ‘Moulin Rouge’ soundtrack hit:

If so, there’s no need to worry because TGJ has you covered.

A remix of MadeinTYO’s ‘Uber Everywhere’,Lyft‘ serves as one of many remixes the singer/actor has employed to keep his name afloat as he buries himself away to build his next studio album.

It ranks pretty low on the maturity scale.

Does that stop it being from enjoyable release?

Today’s musical audience bestows artists with the “Icon” title well before their work warrants such an honor. The notion of being “iconic” has become as watered down as an artist christening new music as “organic.” Some assert that the time is gone where true icons are born and the new generation will fail to produce global icons such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, or Prince. After the jump we will breakdown what we feel it takes to be a true “Icon” in today’s musical landscape.

Below awaits That Grape Juice’s four T’s of being an Icon.
