Over the next year, pioneering Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson will be the subject of three different biopics – an undertaking set to see Jill Scott, Ledisi, and ‘Orange is the New Black’ star Danielle Brooks portray the titular character in those respective films.

As the latter was the first announced (like we reported here), it will be the first unveiled.

Due Easter weekend 2021, the Lifetime made-for-TV movie was produced by EMMY-nominated newscaster Robin Roberts and will chronicle Jackson’s humble beginnings in the Jim Crow South to her performances on some of the most important stages in the world – groundbreaking efforts that led to her being dubbed the “Mother of Gospel Music.”
