To say “Angela Bassett did the thing” at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards would be an understatement.

Before this year’s ceremony, the Academy & EMMY Award-nominated actress already sat pretty in the award show’s record books with a whopping 13 career wins for previously claimed victories for ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It,’ ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back,’ and many more.

At the show’s 54th annual iteration (which was hosted by Queen Latifah and aired February 25), Bassett nabbed another 4 nods across TV and film categories for her work on FOX’s ‘9-1-1’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ respectively.

The Supremes, Slick Rick, and Nile Rodgers may all be hailed as pioneers for the grounds they’ve broken in music genres of R&B/Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, and Funk/Disco respectively, but despite that reverence none of them were ever recognized for their own albums or singles by the Recording Academy.

That is set to change February 5 as all three legendary acts will join the hallowed halls of the GRAMMYs’ Lifetime Achievement recipients.

‘The Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey isn’t the only Black Disney princess that has had people talking recently.

As reported here, Academy & GRAMMY Award-winning songstress H.E.R. (born Gabriella Wilson) is starring opposite GRAMMY, EMMY, and TONY-nominated Josh Groban in ABC’s live 30th anniversary nod to the animated classic ‘Beauty and the Beast.’

Portraying Belle and Adam (“The Beast”) respectively, the two singing sensations lead an all-star cast that features Queen of Country Pop Shania Twain, legendary actor-comedians David Alan Grier and Martin Short, Joshua Henry,and more.

Ahead of its highly anticipated December 15 premiere, Wilson and Groban are taking anxious viewers behind the scenes to talk about the making of the Hamish Hamilton-directed venture (which will also see songs from the original performed in front of a live audience).

VH1 is keeping viewers in the holiday spirit with its slew of star-studded Christmas movies this year.

The next to make its way to airwaves will be ‘All I Didn’t Want For Christmas,’ led by Academy Award-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe and EMMY-winning screen legend Loretta Devine.

In the seasonal comedy, Sidibe’s character (“Emily”) – thanks to an attempt to improve her life and ensure her Christmas doesn’t suck as usual – writes a drunken letter to Santa.  Much to her dismay, she forgot what she wrote and all of her wishes come true – a roller coaster that leads to some uncomfortable surprises that eventually sends her on a path to discover what she truly needs.

In what comes as the feature film debut of award-winning director Kenya Barris, Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the forthcoming film ‘You People.’

Toplined by Academy Award-nominated comedy legend Eddie Murphy and veteran comedy actor Jonah Hill, the star-studded flick – which also boasts Nia Long, Mike Epps, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren London, Deon Cole, Rhea Perlman, David Duchovny, and many other familiar names in its cast – tells the story of “a new couple who falls in love and finds themselves confronting societal expectations and generational differences amidst their families’ clashing cultures.”

As one of the most revered names in music history, Diana Ross has collected many Gold and Platinum plaques for her classic hits over her six-decade career.

But, many would be surprised to know the iconic diva has never won a GRAMMY in the traditional sense.  In fact, she was 67-years-old before she’d ever accepted any honor from the Academy – and even then it was the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The music industry and its enthusiasts are still buzzing as Tuesday (November 15) brought with it the highly anticipated unveiling of the 2023 GRAMMY nominations.

Ahead of honoring the year’s best and brightest in the music realm on February 5, 2023, the coveted tally expectedly listed the likes of chart-toppers Beyonce, Adele, Harry Styles, Bad Bunnyand Lizzo as competitors for the ceremony’s top honors.

With the GRAMMY Awards announcing nominations next Tuesday (November 15), Beyonce, Adele, and Bad Bunny are all poised to pick up several nominations each.

Rihanna may have spent most of the week enjoying the sight of her Twitter mentions going up to celebrate the release of ‘Lift Me Up,’ her long-awaited comeback single and contribution to the ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ soundtrackbut her.

But, the latter half of the week is seeing her name pushed to even higher heights on the platform for less-than-celebratory reasons – namely association with Academy Award-nominated actor Johnny Depp.

A career as captivating as Angela Bassett‘s undoubtedly has peaks and troughs that skew both public and private. And the superstar opens up about all in the November / December issue of Essence Magazine. 

Covering the latest edition of the publication in illustrated form, Bassett draws on a variety of narratives to make clear that her story is one defined by colors – both light and dark, challenges, and overcoming the tallest of obstacles.

Within her candid feature, the 64-year-old talks about the “butterflies” she felt on set reprising her role as matriarch Ramona in Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘ (which premieres on November 11).

Bassett also waxed candid about the juxtaposition between breaking through with her Oscar-nominated portrayal of Tina Turner in the biopic ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ and the reality that it didn’t multiply her opportunities at the time.
