Lauryn Hill will need to make space on her mantel for a shiny new accolade.

For, the revered multihyphenate has seen her singular solo album, 1998’s ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ named the Best Album of All-Time by Apple Music.

The streamer’s countdown of the “best” LPs ever culminated today (May 22) with the reveal of the top 10 – and it brought with it several surprises.

Per Apple Music, the tally was crafted by its team of experts alongside a select group of artists, songwriters, producers, and industry professionals. It’s touted as an “editorial statement, independent of any streaming numbers” on their platform – or any platform.

SZA may only have two albums to her credit, but in just 7 short years she’s lifted sales stats that rival some of music history’s biggest names.

With 10 Hot 100 top 10 hits and over 60 million singles sold in the United States alone, the GRAMMY-winning songstress has proven herself an undeniable force in music.

For those reasons and more, the Songwriters Hall of Fame has announced the R&B diva (born Solana Rowe) will be the recipient of one of its biggest honors at the organization’s forthcoming induction ceremony.

Having marked a personal milestone by becoming her first solo top 40 placement on the Hot 100, Sexyy Red‘s latest release – ‘Get It Sexyy‘ – was seemingly already on its way to becoming her biggest unaccompanied hit yet.

Now, it’s bona fide.

Rihanna and SZA are the only Black women in the nearly 78-year history of Billboard’s all-genre album chart to own projects that have charted for over 300 weeks (the equivalent of nearly 6 years).

While Rih leads the pack with the 410-week stay of her last LP, the 2016-released ‘Anti,’ the ongoing success of SZA’s 2017 debut album, ‘CTRL,’ puts it in a unique Billboard club due to its extended tenancy on the chart.

Beyonce‘s foray into Country music has been nothing short of historic.

Beyond watching the single ‘16 Carriages‘ ride her into history books for being one of few female singers with over 50 top 40 hits, the Killah B-produced ‘Texas Hold ‘Em‘ took hold of the Hot 100’s top spot this week – a feat that made her the first Black woman to occupy the hitlist’s summit with a Country tune.

As if that’s not enough to boast, she joins Taylor Swift as the only women to top the all-genre chart with a Country hit this century.

And, while her beloved fanbase – affectionately call the #Beyhive – continue to buzz over the aforementioned triumphs, there may be an even bigger reason to celebrate.

Fun fact: only 41 acts in the history of recorded music can boast the honor of having earned 20 or more Platinum-certified records from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) over their careers.

For context, “Platinum” refers to sales equivalence of 1 million units in the United States.

An exclusive list undoubtedly boosted by the inclusion of streaming in the certification criteria, it’s still one that’s eluded Black female performers on mass as they represent less than 10% of the hitmakers in the exclusive club.

Recently, R&B diva SZA – thanks to the ongoing success of hits found aboard her long-awaited sophomore album ‘SOS‘ – helped the score increase for women of color.

Thanks to her blockbuster 2022 album, ‘SOS,’ R&B singer-songwriter SZA entered the 2024 GRAMMYs as the night’s most-nominated act (9).

Rightfully so, as the project had not only birthed multiple Billboard Hot 100 dominating hits (‘Kill Bill,’ ‘Snooze,’ and more) but was easily one of the most critically acclaimed albums of its genre in years.

For its critical and commercial successes, many of her dedicated fans figured the project would be a shoo-in for the award show’s most prestigious honor.

Much to their surprise and chagrin, the LP and its content did not capture one of the Big 3 categories it was nominated in.
