‘Eyes Closed,’ an ode to ‘heartbreaking loss,’ arrived on March 24 as the first single lifted from Ed Sheeran‘s May 5-due new album, ‘Subtract.’
“This song is about losing someone, feeling like every time you go out and you expect to just bump into them, and everything just reminds you of them and the things you did together,” Ed explained. “You sorta have to take yourself out of reality sometimes to numb the pain of loss, but certain things just bring you right back into it.”
To bring the song to life, Sheeran sought to encapsulate sadness as ‘an imaginary creature’ (a big blue monster) and turned to the 1950 classic ‘Harvey‘ for inspiration for its music video. The cinematic venture was undoubtedly part of the fuel that helped propel ‘Eyes’ to a top 40 opening on this week’s Hot 100.
Another stride to keep the tune front-of-mind for his beloved fans, affectionately called #Sheerios, came courtesy of a behind the scenes look at its Mia Barnes-directed music video.
