How time flies!

It’s been three years since Jessie J scorched with the blazing ‘Bang Bang.’

In the time since, the Brit-bred belter has experienced notable ups and downs; album ‘Sweet Talker’ didn’t ignite the charts in the way hoped, she left her management company, and retreated Down Under to rebuild her brand on The Voice Australia.

Recharged and raring to go, the vocal wonder has been in the studio with DJ Camper cooking up her next project.

Taking to Instagram Live, she performed new song ‘I Believe In Love’ in full. Check it out below…

Rihanna is flexing her acting muscles once again and this time it’s in Luc Besson‘s Sci-Fi flick ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.’

Ms. Fenty will play Bubble – a shapeshifting entertainer.

Teasing at her character’s flair for variety, a new teaser has been released and features RiRi dipping, popping, and dropping it low — as best she can.

Watch below…

Well ok, then. Great to see Rih channelling her inner Sasha Fierce!

Reviews for ‘Valerian’ thus far been markedly mediocre; but who knows, maybe the Bajan sensation will save the day with her dazzling moves?

‘Valerian,’ which also stars Clive Owen, Cara Delevingne, and Ethan Hawke,  hits theaters in the US on July 21st.

For as much mileage as the “Real Housewives” franchise still has, it’s often a struggle for newer branches to successfully bloom.

However, for ‘The Real Housewives Of Potomac’ it’s proving a task they’re up to.

A ratings success, the Bravo show has proven increasingly popular during its second season.

Paired for much of its run with the ‘Atlanta’ arm, the series has maintained over 1 million viewers – even after the Spring climax of its older sister.

This Sunday sees the final part of the season 2 reunion special air, with the ladies addressing a number of pertinent issues.

Per the sneak peeks below, Robyn‘s odd relationship with Juan is dissected the more, as are the marriages of Karen, Ashley, and Charisse. What’s more, with newcomer Monique reading Gizelle (for filth) in part one, it’s anyone’s guess what firework’s she’ll be setting off for the closing instalment.

Fresh from rocking the 2017 BET Awards, Tamar Braxton is offering the masses more of her new album.

The outspoken reality star invited Wendy Williams to her home studio to listen to what she’s been cooking up in the studio for the follow-up to 2015’s ill-fated ‘Calling All Lovers.’

In the segment below, the 40-year-old plays the talk-show host the song ‘Rather Go Blind.’ The track which features in snippet form within the video for ‘My Man.’

Check it out below…

Make no mistake, Tamar sings her face off! A rarity in today’s climate, which almost seems to reward those who do the exact opposite.

That said, we’re still waiting on that ‘Love & War’ esque offering. Not so much sonically, but just something that is as instant, as resonant, and as mass appealing.

Welcome to the latest TGJ Roundtable!

Over the years, That Grape Juice has established a distinguished voice that – whether loved or loathed – sparks discussion, debate, and on occasion drama!

Though comprised of seasoned writers who share a similar outlook on Urban Pop culture, the idiosyncrasies of the TGJ team members often lend for quite heated debates “behind the scenes” about the hottest topics.

Now, we give you a front row seat to the show. In a format similar to ‘The View’ or ‘The Real’, TGJ editors – Sam, David, Rashad, and Joe – get real in a very candid way.

Today’s roundtable topic asks each anchor their thoughts on the…

2017 BET Awards

Sam

For me, this year’s show didn’t pack the fireworks that traditionally make the BET Awards as popping as usual. However, it did feature moments – though sparse – that were memorable.
New Edition, far and away, were the night’s MVP’s. Their Lifetime Achievement segment was electricity defined. They still have “it” in abundance and the tie-in with the cast of their biopic made the music biz geek in me jump with joy. It was the perfect synchronisation and felt like a full circle moment six months on from the mass watched movie. Epic.

Elsewhere, Bruno Mars is officially the most dependable male performer of this era. Though I would have much preferred if he performed ’24k Magic’ or ‘Chunky,’ he proved with his showing of ‘Perm,’ that he’s equipped to slay regardless of the song choice.
The Xscape medley was exquisite and has yours truly buzzed for all that’s to come.
Everything else was a of a mixed bag.
Sans Big Sean, it didn’t feel like (m)any of the Rap performers even tried. Similarly, the once promising Trey Songz showed his regression for all to see.
While warming that Tamar Braxton “booked” such a big stage, ‘My Man’ (as much as I enjoy the song) didn’t match the enormity of the platform. With all the wig shaking and theatrics, she was clearly searching for a moment and it just didn’t materialize. Still, her pre-record was lit. *Reminds self to rip audio to iPod*
Mary J. Blige looked great, but has sounded better. Her song choice grated somewhat too. ‘Thick Of It’ would have fared better; especially if paired with that Kendu-triggeringSet Me Free’ intro. Because ‘Love Yourself’ just isn’t the wave.
The Remy Ma win for Best Female Hip-Hop was as obvious as the sun’s rising. Indeed, between ‘Shether’ and Nicki Minaj‘s announcement that she wouldn’t be attending, it’s safe to say we all saw it coming. Still, it provided a “moment” and – in breaking Onika’s 7 year winning streak – symbolically pointed to a changing of the tide. Not just in that category but arguably for the show in general.
Clocking in at a longer than usual 4 hours, the Awards seemed keener than ever to spotlight new names; case in point the main stage slots for the likes of SZA and Khalid. Producers also did away with the explicit focus on what’s topping the charts by inviting seasoned stage serenaders like Maxwell to do their thing. As well as acts that “need” the platform like Tamar. A refreshing move given how most shows simply mirror whatever is hot on the radio.
With the absence of heavy hitters such as Beyonce, Rihanna, and countless others, it was always going to be an uphill battle for this year’s show. And I’m not convinced it made it to the mountain top – or even came close.
What it did do well though is sow the seeds for an updated award show format that isn’t dominated by popularity politics. Which ultimately is a good thing, especially if the concept is allowed to blossom in the years ahead.
Ps. I realised I never touched on Leslie Jones‘ hosting, which pretty much says it all re that .

Last night’s show stood as the first since exec Stephen Hill‘s departure so I, like many, expected major changes to the spectacle.

On a positive front, Remy Ma’s win, the New Edition tribute and the focus on Urban music’s “new” wave of stars (see SZA) stood as three of the night’s many highlights for me.

That being said, there were a number of performances which felt more filler than they did thriller, lacking the trending-topic generating moments the likes of Ciara, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj have delivered in the past.

As for the Xscape reunion?

It was an awesome reminder of the group’s impact, talent (and on all tips) superiority over their predecessors, who arguably lack the vocal prowess and professional polish the group showcased – even with a few unfortunate hiccups from Kandi Burruss.

In short, I enjoyed the show but don’t think it was as good as last year’s.

A score out of 10? 6.

Rashad

Easily the worst BET Awards to date.

First thing’s first:  Leslie Jones, girl, no.  Just no.   And, hopefully never again.  The new acts, while appreciated as it’s always cool to highlight up-and-coming talents, seemed awkwardly placed and scattered throughout the show as time-fillers. Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Xscape, Mary J. Blige, and Maxwell – the more seasoned acts – left a bit to be desired for varying reasons.

If Bruno Mars was the bait to pull viewers having him kick off the show actually worked to its detriment because he set the bar way too high for the acts that followed. An overall boring affair, I, like Bruno, found there were times throughout it was hard to stay awake.  In fact, on the performance front, the only standouts besides him were the epic New Edition performance (which almost saved the show by its lonesome) and Tamar Braxton’s dramatic, yet engaging performance. It was just an overall miss, which is surprising given that the BET Awards ALWAYS bring it.
P.S. – While I cannot help but appreciate BET for paying homage to George Michael, a caucasian artist long praised in the Black community for his soulfulness, El Debarge was not the best pick for his tribute. There were literally times where Debarge’s voice sounded like he was saying “meow meow meow” or, dare I say it, sounded like someone was crumpling foil. No bueno.

The BET Awards this year could have been renamed “the gift that keeps on giving.” Put simply, the ceremony was phenomenal.

First thing is first, you can never go wrong when you book Bruno Mars to kick-off a show.

I felt very elated seeing Solange and SZA finally getting the recognition they deserve; the girls felt, looked and were treated like rock stars.

On the throwback front, the uncles and aunties showed up and showed out! New Edition’s presence on the BET stage felt like the most natural thing and clearly the audience enjoyed, while the ladies of Xscape reminded the world that they weren’t flash in the pan or just reality TV celebrities but bonafide powerhouses. How refreshing seeing Kandi and Tiny celebrated for their tremendous talent once again.

Trey Songz forgettable performance was eclipsed by Chris Brown’s stellar showing, Khalid is really one to watch and that was made official at yesterday night’s event; and of course Maxwell remains the master of crooning.

A shout out to the creative directors who have blatantly upped the ante with the visuals and the staging. Long gone it seems are the days where rappers came armed with nothing but their hype man: Big Sean, French Montana, Kendrick Lamar, Future and Migos served vivid and edgy visuals.

The VMA’s ought to watch out: the BET Awards are slowly but surely becoming THE definitive music awards show ceremony for the millennials.

In the Black diaspora, the “barber shop” has become more than a transformative space.

Indeed, in many ways its end-product (a “fresh cut”) is often “added value” to its most powerful facet of being a public sphere for Black men.

It’s a debate space, a therapist’s room, a sports stadium, a cinema, and a religious pulpit.

Sewn into the scent of clipper oil and Afro hair products is a pervading portion of testosterone – warm in temperature and inviting more than intimidating.

It provides a hearty hotbed for conversations about love, life and lineage, as well as acting as a willing wall to lean on during times of hurt and hardship.

Playwright Inua Ellams draws on all of this for his critically acclaimed production ‘Barber Shop Chronicles.’

An intense and immersive offering, the play journeys from a barber shop in London, to Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos and Accra.

A fusion of the hard-hitting and the humorous, the production dissects the semantics of Black masculinity and sets out to remould how it’s rationalised.

Through enlightened writing and powerful performances, ‘Chronicles’ succeeds in its intent. Sure it entertains, but it more crucially educates, empowers, and expands understanding of one of the most maligned groups in history.

A must see.

Ludacris may not be a seeing his name signed atop Billboard charts these days, but that certainly hasn’t stopped the Atlantan hitmaker from signing his name on some hefty contracts.

The rapper, who’s seen the latter half of his career dedicated more to roles on the small and big screens, has also been bitten by the hosting bug.  But, as if hosting the Billboard Music Awards wasn’t enough for his resume, the ‘Move B*tch’ beau is moving to MTV after inking a production deal that will see him develop new programming for the former music network.

The first of said developed programming?  A ‘Fear Factor’ reboot:

Luda’s not only serving as the show’s host, but will also executive produce.  The gross and often stomach-churning competition will see its guests duke and puke it out for a grand prize of $50,000.

“I am excited to kick off my partnership with MTV, starting with the relaunch of ‘Fear Factor,’ which will be even more insane and ludicrous than what you remember,” said Ludacris. “This will be the first of many great projects together.”

Catch MTV’s “Fear Factor” reboot with Ludacris when it premieres on Tuesday, May 30 at 10pm ET/PT.

For me, the show lacked until seasoned names such as Celine Dion, Cher, and Bruno Mars showed up to inject some much needed life. And even then, there’s only so much electricity they were able to lend to an otherwise flatline of a show.

About a quarter of the way through, an air of “b-side” begun to rear its head and never quite disappeared. Odd on the surface, as the show wasn’t necessarily lacking in star power.

Yet upon deeper thought, it wasn’t hard to establish why some of today’s top talent couldn’t conjure up anything collectively astounding.

Nicki Minaj, much as I love her, is still on the hunt for a definitive hit this era. Hence, while it was cute to see her perform many of the songs she has out in the marketplace, sewing them together in a medley only served to remind that none of them have ascended to “smash” status. A commendable effort, though.

Elsewhere, Drake’s aquatic aesthetic couldn’t distract from the desert dry nature of what he had on offer, while newcomers such as Halsey did little to rouse my interest. Indeed, the latter seemed to have paid close attention to Rihanna’s lazy, laxed performance style – which is off-putting in its original form  and even moreso when imitated.

The evening brought with it a much hyped performance from Camila Cabello. And as one of the folk wanting both she and her former group Fifth Harmony to win, I longed for her knock her first solo booking out of the park. But, for all the pomp and pageantry, something lacked. Like, despite being vocally competent and hitting her choreo marks, I felt like I was watching a high-school talent show. Sure, she has room to grow (which she inevitably will), but let’s just call a spade a spade.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, though. For, as mentioned, Dion, Cher, and Mars each showcased why they are who they are.

‘My Heart Will Go On’ was sung exquisitely regardless of the lip-syncing debate and when paired with the grandeur of the staging ensured that Dion delivered a performance that will be remembered – much like the song – for years to come.

Cher, who received the Icon Award, didn’t do a whole lot on stage. But, at 71, what she did bring (including her barely there outfits) reminded that she is an authentic and enduring rock star. Indeed, despite being literally three times older than some of today’s Pop tarts, she has three times the presence of many of them. Legend.

Mars, with his showing of ‘Versace On The Floor,’ further certified why he is one of today’s most consistently dependable performers.

As for the winners, that was neither here nor there for me – as they’re all but predetermined as the show is based as actual Billboard sales and streaming data. All of which don’t necessarily equal quality or merit.

All in all, the 2017 BBMAs wasn’t’t terrible it just wasn’t memorable – which in a way is actually worse.

Another fantastic showing from the brains behind the Billboard Music Awards.

Standing as one of its strongest outings to date, last night’s ceremony offered viewers a healthy mix of new and established acts who- for the most part- rocked the night with first-rate performances.

Nicki Minaj, who has always struggled to deliver performances and videos worthy of her A list status, opened the night with her strongest live offering to date. Why her strongest?

Its delivery of the formula responsible’s for the rapper’s rise.

A little grit, fashion, femininity, impressive yet manageable choreography, charisma and the versatility her contemporaries often lack.

Here’s hoping the team behind her performance plays a part in her forthcoming world tour.

Another one of the night’s highlights? Celine Dion.

Isn’t it interesting that an act who debuted in the 80s did more for an award show in 2017 than acts who should be in their prime in…2017?

Yes. However, let’s hope that Pop’s new class took notes when the vocalist took to the stage last night to perform her timeless classic ‘My Heart Will Go On’.

How I’d rate last night’s show? 8 out of 10.

**************

Rashad

To say the 2017 BBMAs left much to be desired would probably be giving it too much credit. It left EVERYTHING to be desired.
Nicki’s opener, though visually impressive, just served as a reminder of how incapable she is of commanding the stage. The song choices also reeked of #pressed as each (except ‘Regret’) housed lyrics aimed at Remy Ma while collectively failing to have the -umph that made ‘Shether’ so powerful.

Elsewhere, Camila Cabello’s televised debut of ‘Crying in the Club’ left me crying…tears of laughter. Armed with stiff choreo and pitchy vocals that at times sounded like she was responding to wasp and mosquito stings, that performance had me wondering “is she serious” at several junctures.

Every other performance – barring Cher, Celine, and Bruno – lacked memorability.  So, without question, the night’s highlights were the legends – Cher & Celine – who both showed the new school how it’s done.  If they were absent that show would’ve almost been unbearable.

**************

Joe

How far has Nicki Minaj come?! Indeed, a lot has happened since the ‘Superbass’ days. To me, this performance solidified her status as – NOT only the leading lady of Hip-Hop, but – a world class Pop star.

Bruno Mars simply but surely brought the house down with future Top 10 hit ‘Versace On The Floor’.

Other than that, the nostalgia performances were a sweet touch only for the fact that they presented the honorees in a very “hip” and “relevant” light and not some random blasts from the past.

Jury’s still out on whether Camila Cabello has what it takes to be a solo star. She definitely has the charisma, the made-for-radio vocals and the star quality but does she have enough of all those elements to sit with the Ariana’s and Miley’s? To be fair, her performance was on par with what those ladies usually serve – which isn’t much really – so there’s hope. And on the topic of Miley, her first televised performance since trashing Hip-Hop culture was a reflection of the song itself: cute, no more no less.

Drake’s triumph was to be expected considering how good the past year has been to him chart-wise and it’s cool to see that Beyonce wasn’t forgotten too.

See you next year, BBMAs.

The rumor mill has put Phaedra Parks in the middle of the madness, with suggestion that she is the puppet-master. Allegedly.

And while the answer will arrive in a mere matter of days, a newly released preview shows Porsha Williams and Kandi Burruss cry tears (both of the angry and sad variety) in the aftermath of the “reveal.”
