Twenty years.

That would be how long mega-producer Jermaine Dupri has decorated Billboard charts with a slew of hits for the likes of Mariah Carey, Usher, Janet Jackson, and countless others.

Indeed, throughout a storied career of lending a passel of platinum plaques to many-an-Urban Pop favorite, Dupri is now looking to stroll down memory lane with an assembly of stars from his self-fronted record label ‘So So Def’ to celebrate reaching the two decade milestone.

Chatting exclusively with That Grape Juice, JD details the inspiration behind the anniversary special (likening it to ‘Motown 25’) and shares dibs on Mariah’s forthcoming album, thoughts on Bow Wow vs. Kandi, and addresses rumors he’s working on Janet Jackson’s newest record.

As ever, this is a must read:

The content of this tribute was conceived in the wake of Whitney Houston‘s passing, yet the plausibility of publishing withered with each keystroke. For, despite being days divided from the her tragic demise, there remained a distinct sense of the “unreal” about the very real silencing of The Voice.

Shocking on many a front, I ironically learned of Whitney’s death on That Grape Juice.

As with all award show windows, the lead-up to Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala 2012 saw all hands on deck amongst the TGJ team. Hence, already in place on the afternoon of February 11th 2012 was a “Hot Shots” draft for Houston’s grand arrival – as had been routine for years prior.

In London and resting up ahead of night-through-morning carpet coverage, I could not conceive the idea that my next waking moment would bring with it news that The Voice was no more. Nor could I ever fathom the fact that the said “Hot Shot” post would instead be published as “Whitney Houston Passes Away At 48”.

Never.

************

The actions and events leading up to Whitney’s death have been debated in earnest since – with many, including yours truly, forced to confront facts that were all-too-willingly swept under the rug in hope of her eventual recovery. Such a reality is a harsh and hard pill to swallow, but one now easier to digest with the water of time and reflection.

Like the demise of Michael Jackson, Houston’s passing remains a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. Yet, again like the King Of Pop, her tale  stands as one of the most pronounced and celebrated realizations of the American Dream.

For, though blessed with a voice that was both alien and otherworldly, the late star’s rise wasn’t without its challenges. Introduced in an era which saw few Black or female acts ride high on the charts, Houston – in shattering such ceilings – would still face backlash. Ironically, the mass of this critique stemmed from her “own people” – with many Afro-Americans christening her sound “white washed Pop”. Yet with steely resilience, the singer charged on creating a sound and success narrative that would open the doors for many of today’s megastars such as Beyonce.

************

Whitney was deemed a “diva” for many reasons; yet in more ways than one, her voice was more of a diva than she could ever be. Put simply, it demanded a brand and strand of respect that was almost ethereal. And that, for me, is what really makes her the legend she is and forever will be.

So it’s with much sincerity that I thank those who brought her music into my world, as well as those who made it possible to see her perform in person prior to her passing. For, as a true lover of music and showmanship, there is nothing that can substitute those experiences.

Greatness doesn’t die, it lives on and inspires. The contributions Whitney Houston made to music (and the millions of lives she touched with hers) are ever-enduring. It’s this fact, one year later, that helps raise the widest of smiles.

Your thoughts?

Superproducer Bangladesh has lent the music industry over a decade worth of hits.

Working with the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna to Lil’ Wayne and Nicki Minaj, the hitmaker (born Shondrae Crawford) has decorated Billboard charts with bangers over multiple genres.

But, despite imparting platinum plaques to all of your favorite rappers and singers, Crawford exclusively tells That Grape Juice that there is much uncharted territory to conquer – namely seeing his name afront those same plaques as lead act.

Dishing with TGJ on rumors of “artists stealing production credits”, his solo workings, and industry beefs, as ever, you know we asked the questions you want the answer to.  Click below to see a new side of your favorite producer’s favorite producer – Bangladesh:

Since it emerged she had been enlisted to judge on the show, there’s been an effort by some critics to belittle Nicki Minaj‘s achievements to justify their own doubts on her.

Of course, to any who’s followed her career since 2007 can attest to, the Rapper is anything but the mindless firework some outlets have billed her as following her run in with fellow judge Mariah Carey back in October.

Now watch as Minaj explains her layered past with those unfamiliar with it in a new promo piece for ‘Idol’.

A piece, where she opens up on the painful criticism she received as a Rap upstart, her days as a struggling actress and how her time as a ‘Red Lobster’ waitress fuelled her undying ambition to make her dreams a reality.

Her season-long run on the show has received much publicity, but it seems NBC wants to give viewers new reasons to tune in every week leading into the season premiere.  Enter ‘Can’t Let Go’ – Hudson’s soaring ballad set for feature on the show.  Joined by the show’s other stars as background singers (including fellow American Idol alum Katharine Mcphee), see below for Hudson blowing the audience away in ways only she knows how.

Anyone who has followed Mariah Carey‘s illustrious career will be well-versed in the stormy nature of her relationship with  Tommy Mottola.

The powerful music exec signed the songbird in her late teens, flexed his corporate and financial muscles to ensure she became a global megastar, and went on to marry her in 1993. At the time of their grand nuptials, the budding diva was 23 while Mottola was 20 years her senior.

Unfortunately for the duo, their marriage would crumble in 1997 amidst claims from Carey that Mottola was too controlling and that he abused her “mentally and emotionally”.

Despite this, Carey’s run-in with her ex and his new wife in 2005 suggested any issues were water under the bridge; an observation  which makes the existence and timing of Mottola’s new book ‘Hitmaker’ particularly suspect.

Set to hit stores on January 15th – a day before MiMi makes her televised debut on American Idol, the memoir sees the industry supremo relay his “side” of the story.

And while freshly released excerpts suggest he won’t be throwing his former bride under the bus, he does make a number of interesting remarks.

Fantasia is not happy.

The American Idol star has been under the media microscope this week following comments she made regarding Gay marriage that she insists were taken out of context.

Unfortunately for the 28 year old, her clarification on the matter has appeased some, but not all; with vocal critics raining a tirade of abuse on her online.

Clearly frustrated with the matter, the singer took to the very platform that sparked the debate, Instagram, to air out her feelings.

Last night saw the airing of TNT’s annual Christmas special ‘Christmas In Washington’.  Set in the United States’ capital, previous years have seen some of music’s hottest acts like Aaliyah, Justin Bieber, Ciara, Jojo, and more grace the stage to spread Christmas cheer for the sitting ‘First Family’.

Much to the pleasure of the Obamas, this year saw legend Diana Ross act as headliner as Demi Lovato (‘All I Want For Christmas’), ‘American Idol’ winner Scotty Mcreery, and more take the stage with their own brand of yuletide offerings.  Even ‘Gangnam Style’ hitmaker PSY dropped by to perform his top-selling hit.
