Diddy

Following several weeks of industry mumerings, it has been confirmed that Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is leaving Warner / Atlantic Records, and reportedly joining Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope label. Perhaps most shocking, however, is that his Bad Boy imprint will REMAIN over at Atlantic, hence after launching the careers of Day26, Cherri Dennis and everyone’s favourite ‘sanger’ Cassie, the mogul is leaving them behind to persue his career elsewhere. Ouch. Peep the report below:

With his contract wrapped, Sean “Diddy” Combs is ankling Warner Music Group/Atlantic Records as an artist, a source confirmed Friday.

Much-rumored departure does not affect WMG’s joint venture with hip-hop impresario’s imprint Bad Boy Entertainment and its acts, which will continue to move through Atlantic.

Bad Boy catalog remains at WMG in perpetuity.

Combs had not been prolific during his five years with WMG: He issued one album, “Press Play,” in 2006. Set debuted at No. 1 nationally.

Recent industry scuttlebutt has placed Combs’ forthcoming album “Last Train to Paris” at Interscope.

Implying a new Bad Boy-styled imprint may be in the offing, Combs said in a statement, “Now that the term of the Warner deal has ended, I have elected to accept an opportunity to move my recording career and future label venture to another company.”

With next to no one really checking for Diddy as an artist (I mean come on now…), the real story here lies with the fact that Day26, Cassie and co are set to remain over at Bad Boy. If there was ever a time I was certain an act was set to be dropped, it’s now – unfortunately. That said, for some reason, I feel we’ll probably be seeing the oh-so-talented Cassie have her contract bought out and her make the move over with her lover boss.

Janet Jackson Releasing '#1's'; Working With Darkchild On New LP
It’s been a whirlwind week for Janet Jackson fans; from her Harpers Baazar interview to the announcement that she’d be performing at the VMA’s, to the electrifying performance itself, to debut of new song ‘Make Me’, it’s been a great time to be a Janet fan.
Well, things seem to be looking even greater for Ms. Jackson (if you’re nasty) supporters as it has been confirmed that the singer, 43, is set to release a new ‘#1’s’ LP via A&M/Interscope on November 13th. According to AOL, ‘Make Me’ is indeed the lead single from the 2-CD set, which will comprise of 30 of Janet’s global #1s. {Source}
Initially assuming the LP was some typical label cash in (Janet released her first 3 albums including ‘Control’ and ‘Rhymthn Nation’ on A&M), I was surprised to see the compilation will be 30 songs long and a 2 disc – this has me thinking it really will also include Janet’s newer material (from the ‘janet’ album right through to ‘Discipline’). Interscope’s involvement (as part of A&M/Interscope-Geffen/Universal) really has me leaning towards the notion that they may just be Ms. Jackson’s new label – which would be fantastic as they are a great label (home to Black Eyed Peas, Mary J Blige, Lady GaGa and more).
In other Janet news, hitmaker Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins has confirmed that he is working on her new original album (due 2010) – and has been for the last few months! Check out the report via MTV:
Sunday night, on the red carpet of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Grammy-winning super-producer Rodney Jerkins spoke fondly of his late friend Michael Jackson and how MJ once beat him at pool. Jerkins also revealed that he and the King of Pop’s baby sis, Janet Jackson, have been collaborating a lot lately. The first record from their sessions, “Make Me,” dropped just a few hours later.
“It’s about dancing,” Jerkins said. “It’s all about her. It’s about [saying], ‘Listen, if you really want to get with me, you gotta make me feel a certain way.’ “
Jerkins, who produced several tracks on Janet’s 2008 album, Discipline, said he and Ms. Jackson have a lot more songs to come.
“I’m working heavily with Janet,” Jerkins said, adding that her new album will have a throwback feel. “We’ve been in the studio for the last month. We’ve been getting it in. We’re going back to basics and fundamental sounds of Janet. We’re trying to target her fans [by making] the records that her fans will embrace. A lot of uptempo stuff makes you feel good. There’s so many different colors of Janet. I’m a fan, I’ve always been a fan of Janet. The Rhythm Nation, the Control, the Janet. record … those make you feel a certain way. It’s been fun. I’m excited about it.”
With their last big collabo being ‘Feedback’ – a Janet classic IMO; I’m definitely excited to see what they come up with. Insiders initially speculated that Janet would solely be making the album with longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which evidently isn’t the case. Still, reports still suggest the award-winning production duo will feature on the album in a major way. With Darkchild being the producer who has brought out the best in Janet in recent years, a Darkchild, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Janet album sounds like one hell of a record.

Janet Gives Fans A Gift - A New Song! 'Make Me'

Following her electrifying tribute performance at the VMA’s, Janet Jackson gave her fans a ‘special gift’ on her official website in the form of a new song called ‘Make Me’. Little officially is known about the cut, though it’s assumed it was produced by longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and that (for a fact) it isn’t her new single – although it may feature on her new album.

Wow! This is Janet overload these last 48 hours! About the song, it’s classic Janet served up with a helping of Funk and a helping of a contemporary Electro-Pop undertone. After years of hearing her singing (and whispering) over harder beats (See: ‘Feedback’, ‘So Excited’), it’s surprisingly weird hearing her sing (and she is singing here) on more light-hearted production on this – which IMO gives a nod to the Janet of ‘All For You’. A little repetitive lyrically, but I’m liking this one.

The next few months should be uber interesting as we find out how Janet intends to proceed with this project of hers i.e. label, release window etc. Anyway, enough of my rambling…{Thanks Oggie!}…
…and of course let us know what you think lol….

Hit or Miss?

R&B crooner R. Kelly stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live this week to perform current single ‘Number One’ along with Keri Hilson. An enjoyable performance, yet something about it was just a tad off – though I can’t put my finger on what it was (a little help people)?

Janet Back In The Studio
After a rather tumultuous few years, Pop icon Janet Jackson is prepping a return to the music scene with the help of original collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. According to sources working close to the as-yet-untitled project, Jackson has been in the lab for the last month and a half with the production duo, who have been the creative forces behind her biggest hits. With Jackson no longer with Def Jam, it is currently unknown which label the record will be released on.
As one of those who felt Janet’s last three releases (‘Damita Jo’, ’20 Y.O’ and ‘Discipline’) were deserving of more success, I’m definitely looking forward to her next record – one that will hopefully be handled correctly. While I’m sure the inevitable ‘She’s done’ mutters will greet whatever she serves up, it’s hard to deny Ms. Jackson’s musical viability; IMO she can hang with the current crop of industry chicks, no problem. Don’t think so? See: ‘All Nite’, ‘So Excited’, ‘Feedback’, ‘LUV’, ‘Rock With U’ etc.

Hot on the promo trail for her ‘In A Perfect World…’ LP, Keri Hilson performed smash ‘Turnin’ Me On’ with Lil’ Wayne on Jimmy Kimmel last night.  She also performed ‘Energy’, which you can view below. Pretty good performances, though I’m eager to see her perform more cuts from her awesome album.

50 Cent 'Explains' Album Delay 50 Cent last week joined a long line of artists this year who saw the release of their latest album’s pushed back. The G-Unit star’s ‘Before I Self Destruct’ LP, originally set for a December 9th release, has been given a 2009 release date. The rapper, real name Curtis Jackson, spoke with MTV about the delay recently. Check out the report below:

NEW YORK — No big conspiracy here: 50 Cent said he decided to delay the release of his Before I Self Destruct album from December 16 until next year because he needed more setup time.

“I’m trying to leave the same way I came in,” he said Sunday night during “Total Finale Live.” “February 4 [2003], Get Rich or Die Tryin’ came out. I drop this album February 3. The time frame. It used to take six to eight weeks for us to position a hip-hop record. Now, it’s taking 12 to 14 weeks.

“Just the positioning,” he continued. “I’m not comfortable where I’m at right now. My song ‘Get Up’ is performing great. I’m happy with ‘Get Up.’ It moved faster than ‘I Get Money’ at radio. But I’m just looking for the opportunity to present more of my material [prior to the album’s release]. It’s not the strongest effort on my album; it’s just a great start for me.”

The video for “Get Up” is out now. Besides paying homage to the Will Smith blockbuster “I Am Legend,” Fif also comes full circle with a nod to his own “In Da Club” video. With the release of Before I Self Destruct, he will fulfill his contractual obligation to Shady/Aftermath and Interscope Records for new recordings. A greatest-hits collection will follow if he does not ink a new contract with Interscope.

“We may put out a greatest-hits record then, [when] we start the renegotiations,” he said of his talks with Interscope.

Although he’s publicly expressed disdain for the way Interscope and its chair, Jimmy Iovine, have handled projects such as Curtis and the G-Unit’s T.O.S., Fif did tell us he’ll let bygones be bygones for the right price.

“I think all artists have things they can point to that have been done wrong at different points in their career,” he said. “It’s cool. I’ll get over it. They can just pay me.” {Source}

Delusions of grandeur, no doubt. I’m not quite sure who 50 is trying to kid with his statements about ‘Get Up’ doing well. The track has no buzz, no nothing. For his sake, he needs to come hard with whatever he drops next, as it may be curtains for him if not (some say it is already).

Randomness: The last part about re-signing with the label for the right price, irrespective of the ‘mis-handling’s’ of his projects (I maintain they were crap anyway), speaks volumes. So much for artistic credibility, the ‘more money’ mentality seems to what 50 is working with. A shame.

Michelle Williams featured on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show last night, offering live renditions of current singles ‘Hello Heartbreak’ (above) and ‘The Greatest’ (below). Though not her best live showings, Michelle did well – especially on ‘The Greatest’. She looked stunning too.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson hit the promo trail hard last week in support of her self-titled debut. Peep her performance of current single ‘Spotlight’ on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show above. Granted I would have liked to see her ‘work’ the stage more, there’s no denying the rarity of ‘that’ voice in an industry which these days seems to prioritise the visual over talent. Good performance.

With The Game’s latest effort ‘L.A.X having finally hit stores this week, the Compton-bred rapper performed current single ‘Dope Boys’, along with Travis Barker, on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show last night. The track is one of my favourites from the LP, so it’s good to see it being done justice live. Good stuff.

What do you think of the performance?

With Nas’ controversial new ‘untitled’ album in stores this week, the acclaimed rapper stopped by the Jimmy Kimmel Live show yesterday to perform current single ‘Hero’ along with Keri Hilson. I really their showing; Nas’ flow was as on-point as ever, Keri held her own with the live vocals and the crowed were hyped. Great performance.

What do you think of the performance?

The Pussycat Dolls performed their brand new single ‘When I Grow Up’ on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show yesterday. While I enjoyed their showing, I was kinda disappointed to see Nicole singing everything again. Having listened to the track, I was under the impression, lead vocals had been shared out a bit more evenly this time, yet I’m assuming that was some ‘studio wizardry’ as Nicole evident sings the whole song (backing vocals included). Is there a point for the others to even have a mic? SMH…
