Bashed and belittled by those who weren’t impressed by its ‘R-rated’ nature, Rihanna‘s ‘Pour It Up‘ made quite the impact upon its October 2013 arrival, for reasons both good and bad.

The good? The push it gave supporting album ‘Unapologetic’ on a sales front, after surpassing sales of 1 million units in the US itself. The bad? Criticism from fans of DanceHall staples Lady Saw and Patra, who took aim at the star’s alleged ‘borrowing’ of their work and trademark styles.

Today, the good finds itself outweighing the bad as the clip reaches a monumental milestone, and as the performer joins management company Roc Nation in celebrating the release of new music from collaborator Elijah Blake!

Over the course of her short, yet success-filled career, Lady GaGa has established quite the connection with the  LGBT community

Indeed, whether it be by way of songs such as ‘Born This Way’ or her philanthropic efforts, Mother Monster has made gay rights one of her top priorities.

It’s little surprise, then, that the community are giving back to the singer in the form of a major award nomination.

After a lengthy break on the bench, ‘TGJ Replay’ is back!

Designed much like our ‘Retro Rewind’ and ‘From the Vault’ segments, ‘Replay’ is That Grape Juice‘s newest retrospective segment – a written quest, if you will, to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday.

Unlike its ‘Rewind’ and ‘Vault’ predecessors, ‘Replay’ looks to dust off and showcase entire albums (and eras) from a library of pop and Urban pop music hits.  Today we roll down memory lane to Urban princess Ciara‘s criminally underrated album ‘Fantasy Ride’

janet-jackson-super-bowl-2014

A decade.

It’s shocking to think a whole ten years have passed since Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake‘s ‘Super Bowl ’04’ showing changed the face of the music industry forever.

Even more surprising, though, is the fact that the split-second that came to be known as “nipplegate” would alter the course of Jackson’s otherwise iconic career, while bizarrely (and unfairly) enhancing Timberlake’s.

Indeed, while industry big wigs ensured the ‘Suit & Tie’ crooner star soared to dizzying heights, it was the Queen of Pop who was left to bear the brunt of the backlash, one that carried very real ramifications – both personally and commercially.

Beyond being branded all but a Jezebel by the media, the singer was blamed by many as the sole cause of the $550,000 fine the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) handed to Super Bowl broadcaster CBS –  figure that was a record at the time.

The FCC then increased the fine per indecency violation from $27,500 to $325,000 shortly after the event.

Adding salt to the controversial wound, the NFL announced that MTV (who produced the showing) would never be involved in another halftime show again.

However, in a major development ten years later, Michael Powell – who served as the FCC chairman at the time of the performance – admits that both his reaction and that of the masses were completely overblown.

In a must-read interview with ESPN, Powell denounces his own claims that the wardrobe malfunction represented  “a new low for prime-time TV”.

High sales may no longer be a guarantee with Kanye West (as seen by last year’s ‘Yeezus’), yet one thing the rapper is ever consistent in serving up is controversy.

Mr Kardashian poses it up in the February issue of Interview magazine, with the spread certainly likely to set tongues wagging thanks to a careful blend of dark imagery and religious overtones.

Equally engaging is West’s interview piece with Steve McQueen, excerpts from which can be found below. These days it appears few have a clear-cut understanding of who Kanye is or wants to be. However, as his words below highlight, he seems as sure of himself as sure can be.

Before its headline-dominating release back in November, Lady GaGa‘s ‘ARTPOP’ LP found itself met with reports claiming it had been armed with a $25 million budget…employed to fund the fun filled release.

Alas, after struggling to rock the charts quite as hard as 2011’s ‘Born This Way‘ did before it, this report was picked by many major news outlets, who now claimed the performer’s label, Interscope, had lost that amount due to the album’s ‘underperformance.’

Now, after keeping mum on the matter for months, the entertainer took to her official fan community site ‘Little Monsters.Com‘, to address the allegedly false report.

This year, it’s her take on PTAF‘s ‘Boss Ass B*tch’ that’s brought her good news in the last seven days, whipping the digital community into a sassy frenzy and boosting her stock on Billboard’s Social 50!

With 850 radio stations in the US, radio station group owner Clear Channel Communications can boast of reaching an audience of 110 million people per week.

So, with this in mind, it’s no wonder many an entertainer seeks to score the full support of the company when launching releases, hoping to garner as much as ‘play’ as possible on its stations and reach the audiences they need to guarantee noteworthy sales.

Now, in response to its surprise release, the organisation’s Entertainment Enterprises president has weighed in on Beyonce‘s new album, and how he thinks its numbers will fare on his formats.

As many of Drake rivals would even confirm, the Canadian native is easily one of Hip-Hop’s most successful talents.

Naturally, such status brings with it ample praise and critique in equal measure. The latter, especially, has been levelled against the MC in recent years due to his supposed “emotional” nature. A start contrast to the hyper-masculinity that stills dominates the Rap arena.

Keen to address the matter, the ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ rapper readily offered his response to the internet jibes thrown his way in the latest issue of VIBE magazine, which he also covers.

The 27-year-old also waxed honest on his friendly rivalry with Kanye West, his goals, desire to be a dad and more.

Peep excerpts from VIBE interview with the articulate star after the jump…
