British singing sensation Amy Winehouse was rushed to hospital yesterday (August 8th) – suffering from a suspected drugs induced overdose. Though official word from Winehouse’s label cites ‘severe exhaustion’ as the reason for the star being admitted to London’s University College Hospital, the papers are suggesting otherwise. According to The Sun :”Limp Amy Winehouse was dragged through an A&E unit’s double doors before collapsing from a huge drugs overdose.” The ‘Rehab’ singer has consequently cancelled all her forthcoming European concerts. {Source}
I’m hoping this will make for her to get help with whatever issues she has – and she definitely has some. Part of Amy’s appeal is, undeniably, her ‘I Don’t Give a F*ck’ persona, yet ‘life’ is much more important than that. Here’s hoping she’s ok – it would be a shame for such talent to be wasted.

Despite putting out a solid sophomore effort in the form of ‘Ms. Kelly’, it’s common knowledge that since release the album has underperformed. Like many, I’ve been awaiting Kelly’s say on the matter. In a recent interview with MSNBC, she said the following:

AP: So, let’s talk about the album’s first week’s sales.

Rowland: Yes, I came in at No. 6 and sold 86,000 records — in a declining market, might I add. I’m very proud of that. Not everybody’s selling records like they used to. Even the biggest artists don’t come out and go platinum in a week anymore. It’s a different day and age in the music industry.

In fairness to Kelly, she had a point about coming in at a respectable number in a rapidly changing market. However, I’m really hoping she realizes that a ‘declining’ market is neither the main or only reason for her poor sales. Put simply, Kelly isn’t in a good situation – in terms of label priority or management. The sooner she realizes that, the quicker her chances of success will materialize.

R&B star Kelly Rowland performed a mini-concert as part of the Early Show Concert Series in Dallas yesterday. Though she performed a number of songs, the televised performances were of new single ‘Comeback’, ‘Bad Habit’ and ‘Like This’. Check Out the performances:

No, No, No

Dilemma

Aside from a few vocal snags, Kelly did her thing – I especially liked the ‘Comeback’ and ‘Bad Habit’ performances. In other, somewhat puzzling, Kelly news, ‘Ghetto’ from her ‘Ms. Kelly’ CD is going for adds at Urban radio. I’m kinda baffled as to why, when ‘Comeback’ has been confirmed as the official next US single (with a video already shot too). My only guess would be that the label want to put out as much possible from the album – video or not?

What do you think of the performances?
R&B songstress Teedra Moses has announced that her long-awaited sophomore CD ‘The Young Lioness’ has been pushed back (again) to next year. In a move to, perhaps, ease the angst of fans eagerly awaiting the album, Teedra has also confirmed that she will release another mixtape before the year’s out. Check out her MySpace post:

hey yall. Just letting you know that my album is not coming out this year. It has been push to the top of next year. Not my decision but I ain’t mad. It is what it is. I really am ready for yall to hear it though!!! Its funny, industry people think every artist hates their label, but in my case their wrong. I don’t hate nobody. I just don’t quite understand their logic. But don’t cry for me Argentina. I’m soooo Goood!! I don’t put my faith in a label my faith is in God, who reminds to have faith in myself and my team. God has a plan for me so no weapons formed against me will ever prosper. I’m starting to work on a Christmas mixed Tape. I know that sounds novel which ain’t normally my angle, but I’mma put a sexy soulful twist on christmas… ya feel me!

TVT (Teedra’s label) really need to get it together. Its been two years or so since the CD was supposed to drop. If-when the album is released-they don’t promote it right, they would have done Teedra and her fans a serious injustice. I’m starting to think she’d be better off at another label.

Again, I know it’s kinda short notice, but I will be interviewing Island Def Jam/So So Def artist Johnta Austin on Wednesday (August 1st). Following a label switch (from Virgin to Island), the talented singer/songwriter is set to drop his ‘Ocean Drive’ album on September 4th. Please drop any questions you may have for Johnta in the comments section. Note that only genuine and reasonable questions will be considered 🙂

*The Jagged Edge interview will be up soon*
After spending it’s 10th week at #1 on the Official UK Singles chart, Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ has made UK chart history. The massive hit is the longest-running #1 single on the chart in over decade – with its nearest comparator being Wet, Wet, Wet’s 1994 smash ‘Love Is All Around’ which spent 14 weeks in the top spot.
Before I’m labelled a ‘hater’, I think its a major achievement for Rihanna – one both she and her fans should be proud of. However, it just goes to show how far little talent, good looks and media saturation will take you. Is that what the industry has come to?

Further to reports earlier this week that Usher is attempting to shut down his top fansite for its negative stance on his relationship with Tameka Foster, the owner has vowed to fight it out in court. Erika Jackson, the webmaster of UsherForever.com, isn’t backing down to legal threats from Usher and his label LaFace -who want her to hand the site over to them. Jackson claims she wants to ‘make a point’ by going toe-to-toe with her favourite artist. Click here to read the full story via TMZ.

The more I hear about this, the more I lose what little respect I have for Usher. It’s unlikely that he’ll win; I’m sure his team didn’t even think this would get as much press as it has. Either way, Usher’s reputation is in a mess right now.

Whilst Danity Kane languish in the pits, Diddy continues to roll out the videos from his barely Gold album ‘Press Play’. This new video for ‘Through The Pain’ sees the Bad Boy label head team up with Mario Winans once again (their last effort being Winans 2003 hit ‘I Don’t Wanna Know’). I’m liking the song and the video – though not all that great – serves its purpose.

Word has it that Diddy has also shot a video for ‘Diddy Rock’ which features Timbaland, Twista and Shawnna – totalling five singles. I just don’t get how Diddy is supposed to be all about the business, yet he chooses to promote himself over a group that are selling more than he is. Too much ego…

What do you think of the video?

As some of you may already know, Ciara has been named as the new face of Rocawear’s female line. It seems the urban clothing label are going all out with this campaign – using both print and television advertisements. I found the interview to be pretty interesting, hearing some of the hurdles the ‘Promise’ singer had to overcome to be where she is now.

Though there is a widespread assumption that ‘Comeback’ will be the 2nd single to be lifted from Kelly Rowland’s sophomore CD ‘Ms. Kelly’ (confirmed in-part by the singer herself ), reliable sources are stating otherwise. According to an insider, the singer’s UK label -Sony BMG/RCA- are set to release the critically acclaimed/fan favourite ‘Work (Put It In)’ as the follow-up to ‘Like This’. This would, however, contradict the singer’s supposed claim that the song couldn’t be released a single due to ‘legal reasons’. Which single will be released? Will Europe recieve a different 2nd single? Only time will tell…
In the meanwhile, click here to listen to the promotional edit of ‘Work’ (ft. Fat Joe) – not the mixtape version from a few months back.
Kelly is set to shoot a video for her 2nd single (whatever it may be) on July 19th and 20th in Los Angeles.
An AOL Sessions with Kelly is set to hit the net on July 20th. Be sure to tune in.
A new Kelly track (from the scrapped ‘My Story’ album) ‘Tell Me’ has surfaced. The song is pretty good, although doesn’t compare to any of the ‘Ms. Kelly’ tracks. LISTEN: Tell Me
Continuing her promo campaign, Kelly made two TV appearances this week. Click here to see her performance on The View and here for The Morning Show.

After months of speculation, it has been announced that superstar Janet Jackson has, in fact, signed with Island Def Jam. Jackson’s hit-maker boyfriend Jermaine Dupri confirmed the singer’s move to the label – where he resides as the President of the Urban division – via Billboard.com. Check out extracts from the article:

“She’s on Island, but it’s more or less [Def Jam CEO Antonio “L.A.” Reid’s] project,” Dupri says. “I let him deal with that on a day-to-day basis. He’s going to A&R that project, too. Janet’s record is one that he’s wanted to do for a long time. He’s very passionate about it.

As for the direction of Jackson’s as-yet-untitled album, Dupri says, “I don’t really know what he’s got in mind at this point. His past record isn’t shabby so I’m going to let him do what he’s going to do. I’m going to do [the new] Mariah [Carey album], and we’re going to make it seem like we’re in competition to see who’s going to have the biggest album of the year.”

In other Janet news, more producers have confirmed their involvement with her project. Speaking with Rap-Up TV, hit-maker Polow Da Don (Promise, Buttons, Like This etc) had the following to say: ‘We’re gonna put her back in the club. I sent her some tracks and she said off the top, she’s like, “I want the hard stuff. I want to dance, I want uptempo, I want club, I want hip”. Producer’s Scott Storch and newcomer Syience (who produced Beyonce and Jay Z’s ‘Hollywood’) have also submitted tracks for the album.

Janet really seems to pulling out all the stops to make sure this new CD is a success; new label, great producers and a hungry team behind her. All the pieces seem to be falling into place for what could be one of music’s biggest comebacks.

What do you think the new Janet developments?

Following Rihanna’s recent success here in the UK, it has been announced that the Bajan star will be touring the UK this December. The 11 date tour will hit all major UK cities including London’s renown Wembley Arena. Tickets are set to go on sale tomorrow (July 13th) and will be available from www.gigsandtours.com / 0871 2200 260. Considering her questionable live performances, I’m kinda surprised she’s actually touring. Then again, with her album sales lower than expected, the label have to make their money back somehow.
In other Rihanna news, her single ‘Umbrella’ is set to enjoy its 9th week at #1 on the Official UK Singles chart, according to mid-week sales. Who is still buying this song?!

Will you be going to see Rihanna?
