I can’t believe you would be dim enough to question were Biggie, Pac or even Nas/Jay-Z are at. Their apex was the 90s. Not the 00s.
So yeah, this list makes sense. Eminem is not only the biggest selling rapper of the past decade, but the biggest selling artist – period. Every one of his albums has been a sales winner of it’s time. I don’t give a f*** if he’s orange with purple polka dots….who should be number over him, when no one has outsold him?
It makes sense that 50 is on the list too, because even though he’s fallen off…he’s still one of the biggest ‘names’ to emerge out of the 21st century.
The whole list, with the exception of maybe Drake (although he’s been arguably the most talked about newcomer in hiphop in the past 5 years) makes sense — if you *think* about it for three seconds.
This list represents CONTEMPORARY success. The “here and now” of the last 10 years. Not the all time greatest.

KAYNE WEST – should clearly be number one on the list. He’s not only a trendsetter, lyrist, producer/- did ya’ll forget he’s responsible for Kid Cudi, Common, Jamie Foxx, John Legend and others. I wish folks on this blog would quit pretending that Eminem is some sort of Kid Rock/Asher Roth-type, who ONLY appeals to white guys of a certain age.
The fact of the matter is that Eminem is and has always been supported by the black community. His music plays on black radio…his songs and albums top the black music charts…his videos play on BET…he’s a regular fixture in magazines and on music blogs that appeal to young black music listeners. Truth be told, he has a millions of black fans.

People who try to talk s*** about Eminem are wrong. There is no question he should be number one on this list. Not only in terms of volume of sales but in consistent quality of music. His worst albums are considered great compared to other rappers. He has some of the wittiest lyrics and creative flows ever recorded. He did a song with biggie, and he was amazing. Same with dre. He did a song with jayz, and killed him. He’s done two with lil wayne, and has embarassed him on both of those songs. People who bring up his race are resentful of his success in the rap game despite his skin color. Maybe if you only listen to the pop s*** that they play on the radio, you might think that his lyrics are dumb, but if people judged weezys quality by listening to lollipop then he wouldn’t be on the list. There isn’t much else on this list that I can challenge, just because its opinionated, but the truth is, saying em is bad is like saying big or pac are bad. First off Drake easily could have been replaced with Fab, Eve or Game all of whom are far more skilled and have a more significant cultural impact (I mean he only had one album, jeeze!). Secondly the truth is no matter how skilled Eminem is (and he is skilled), he would not be where he was if he was black he’s said it on many occasions. Want proof? His style and skill level is almost identical to Royce da 5’9 and nobody really cares about him.

If any other artist on this list dropped 3 consecutive forget-able albums over a 5 year stretch, I guarantee the judging panel would not even consider them for the number one slot. 2) Kanye. He has been at the top since he started and was the most influential of the decade. Producing, style, crossover, albums. Definitely a better artist than Wayne, but not a better rapper. 3) 50 cent. Sold ridiculous records. Started successful label with good artist. Changed music back to street level. Not really a good rapper to me, but his presence out weigh his skills. Kinda fell off at end of decade. 4) t.I. my favorite. He is one of the only rapper with street credit AND skills. Hot albums, and hot singles. Versatile but still real. He could have been higher, but fell off not because of his music but prison time killing his presence. 5). Nelly. Country grammar did crazy numbers. Made some of the hottest songs of the decade. Put Midwest on the map. Even though he is more southern. Fell off towards the end of the decade. not really lyrical. so he drops down 6) ludacris. Most under appreciated in hip hop hands down. one of the most consistent artist. lyrical, funny, and made some hot songs. killed everybody remixes. sold records. should be higher but, like I said under rated. 7) young jeez. Had the streets on lock. Made the way for other artist like gucci mane, Rick Ross, to sell dopeboy/ hustling music to mainstream. not lyrical at all but he is one the realist to do it. has the most respect from the hood out of any main stream artist 8).
8) the game. Revived west coast. Could have been the next big thing but record deal fell through with 50. Good albums. 9) fabulous. Been around for awhile. Always drop hot verses. Had a couple hot singles. Albums did pretty good in numbers. Lyrically he’s one of the best. Never really had the presence but still got respect 10 lupe fiasco. Best rapper out of the new school rappers. Lyrically better than everyone on this list. Food and liquor was a quiet classic. Most conscience rapper to go mainstream since Nas, Common and Kwali. Still got crossover appeal. Album did good, Grammy nominated. I took eminem out cause he wants out before 2000( which is when 21st century starts not 99) He was on biggie album and had two albums before 2000. Wayne almost didn’t make it either. Jadakiss didn’t have enough firepower this decade, Rick Ross is hot but not all decade over anyone here. Plus he kinda road off jeezy’s genre.
