‘Candy Shop’ rapper 50 Cent had nothing but sweet things to say about ‘Baby By Me’ co-star Kelly Rowland in a brief interview with MTV News recently. The rapper, who was quizzed by the interviewer on his current favorites in the industry, gushed about the ‘Motivation’ singer – heralding her as not only ‘the most underrated female soloist in the game’, but proclaiming 2011 to be ‘her year’.
While many would agree, see what else 50 had to say about the commanding R&B diva after the jump:
For once, 50 said something that actually made sense. And while this isn’t the first time the rapper has sung Miss Kelly’s praises, the sentiment expressed in the video appears to be one resonating across the industry. However, and most importantly, do the record buyers feel the same? Time will tell as the diva’s next studio effort, ‘Here I Am’, is due in stores July 26th.

The word ‘underrated’ is clearly overused.A musician that is a huge talent but is stuck up singing in cheap clubs and leaving in poverty is underrated.A musician that has star power and great potential, but keeps performing in small venues and remains unsigned is underrated.An artist that has a record deal, shoots videos, releases singles, promotes, does campaigns, magazine covers and has fans is not underrated.

I think 50 meant people always praising these untalented singers…….who cant sing without auto tune and move like a 90year old granny onstage…………instead of praising someone like KELLY……….Who can sing and slay a stage with stage presence. Kelly’s niche is dance music and it is only when she developed this niche that she is gonna gather a massive fan-base……..I have listened to many of her R&B songs and many of them are not that impressive ……….with better promotions doing dance music, she will go faaaaar……….KELLY ROWLAND’S VOCALS ON DANCE MUSIC SOUND LIKE HEAVEN……..I love her voice on dance music!!!!!!!!!!!!….She needs to wrap up with this album quickly and start working on a dance record ASAP………Especially overseas where dance music is popular……….even here, she is gonna garner world class stardom……..and that will stop people from comparing her to her DC members

Underrated? I think NOT. Kelly has been in the game for a while now. She has more than one album, she’s done videos, movies, all the same things Beyonce’s done. The ONLY reason people are hopping on the Kelly wagon (including myself) is cause people want something new. Beyonce is a POWERHOUSE entertainer. Say what you want about her. Her wigs may look chewed up, but if you put ANY other female singer on stage (including Kelly) and had them do a concert. Who else could slay like Bey does? NO damn body! But to say Kelly is underrated? Nah man, she’s just getting the acknowledgement she deserves now. I’m happy for Kelly. There are way many other artists out there who, in my opinion, are way better than Kelly.

Honestly, I don’t see the hype. I mean she seems like a nice girl but I don’t feel the passion in her performances like I do with Beyonce.
Basically he’s gassing her up. Can Kelly sing? Yes.

If Beyonce only sold 300k in the first week, Kelly will only sale maybe half of that at best. She’s not even really promoting for someone who has an album coming out soon. No second single, no hype.

@ASAP, I agree that underdog is a more accurate description. I think most people have always acknowledged that Kelly can sing and I’ve never heard anyone say that she couldn’t do the DC dance moves, so I don’t find her to be underrated. I think that she just hasn’t been in a position to record hit potential songs until now and she has always had to deal with comparisons to Beyonce and let’s face it, it’s hard for Kelly to get out of Bey’s shadow based on Bey’s clout, status as a strong vocalist and performer with mad stage presence, and popularity that may IN PART be driven by Bey having the ‘look’ that some people find more attractive. All this makes Kelly the underdog and I think that is part of the reason why some people are rooting for her so hard. I noticed that 50 talked about Kelly’s ability to do all of the DC dance moves but did not mention or make vocal ability comparisons. Maybe he didn’t want to go there? (I won’t either.) Anyway, I agree with him that now-a-days it is mainly about getting the right song. Kelly has a huge, popular R&B hit on her hands but with it peaking at #19 on Billboard Hot 100 thus far, she has yet to enjoy big crossover success. We’ll see how far the popularity of the song in the R&B arena will take her album sales. I still find it unpredictable but I think Jill Scott sold about 100,000 without as huge of a hit and Kelly has the DC fanbase so maybe she’ll do better than Jill if her promo picks up.

And Kelly Rowland is known more for her dance tracks than her R&B tracks especially internationally……..she is known for Commander, when love takes over, what a feeling, etc etc….Very few are really into her R&B songs

Kelly’s voice is just as capable as Beyonce’s voice. Beyonce is a known Entertainer/Performer. Kelly has it, she’s just as beautiful. Kelly sings alot better than alot of these artists out. She just needed the right songs. Beyonce is a main fixture on the Pop & R&b charts. Kelly is building as an artist, so thats good. He’s not gassing her, Kelly is talented so he’s correct. I know this is a UK blogsite BUT I MUST SAY THIS……. Kelly already has a fan base overseas. We all know that, its been proven. However, over here in the US Kelly is looked at as a nobody. The main reason is her music does not appeal to the urban audience. She needs to stop trying to do the Euro/Pop sound so much, no1 in the US is feeling the Euro/Pop Kelly. Its sad to say but its the truth. In order for Kelly to be a HUGE success she needs to win over the US urban audience because we all know thats where it counts.

@TJACK25, I think “Motivation” is a step in the right direction for Kelly as far as her needing to “win over the US urban audience”. However, I don’t think any of the other songs on her album sound much like “Motivation” if I remember correctly based on the snippets I heard. The question is whether that song is a big enough step in the right direction. As far as I know, she hasn’t released a Euro/Pop single from the new album overseas, I wonder if that will effect her overseas sells? Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like so far all of her eggs are in the “Motivation” basket. I thought she was going to perform at least part of “Lay It On Me” on the BET awards but that didn’t happen.

“Miss Kelly” was a GREAT album, but unfortunately being under Matthew they dropped the ball on that one. Im not trying to bring up race as an issue, Im bringing up THE TRUTH! In the US, Keri Hilson…. hell even Ciara are looked as bigger artists than Kelly & thats just a fact! If Kelly puts out a solid “dance” album she will once again be seen as a big overseas act & still in the same boat. Dance music is not HUGE here like that. Look at how Beyonce did it… her 1st album catered to who??? THE URBAN AUDIENCE… once she got that fan base on her side, she then began to branch out & BAM now she cant be touched! I honestly think Matthew dropped the ball with the “Miss Kelly” album. There was soooo much that couldve been done. Kelly has released a hit off of each of her three album..shes not underrated at all, she just falls short of her promotion and doesn’t deliver with the second single. you cant tell me work should not have been her second single off Miss Kelly, she put it out over seas and it blew up but she chose Ghetto Ft. snoop dog for the U.S release. I hope she brings it with in the next month to promote the album. Motivation is a hit on the R&B charts..and Well we all know how R&B fans support artist. The lack of promo that’s being mentioned all over the post is justified.This album is Kelly’s first one with her new label, so they won’t go all out there for her yet, especially since her previous 2 records didn’t do that well.And don’t forget that she started off quite bad with the new label (4 flop singles, 4 videos and a scrapped album), so of course they don’t trust her 100% and that’s also the reason why her album includes only 10 tracks, even though she’s been recording for ages

Not once did I say Kelly shouldnt do Dance music…. if anything thats the only thing keeping her afloat! Dance music is the MAIN reason she’s big overseas anyway. What Im saying is that in order for her to be huge both here and there she needs to target her audience HERE! The overseas audience is already on board.
Im done stating my point…. I really want Kelly to sell & be what I KNOW she can be! I will be purchasing this album (as I did the previous 2) and I hope everyone else does as well.

Like i said, Kelly is not a solid R&B deliver…compared to her colleagues, her R&B songs just don’t do it and are very mediocre and lacks something….that is why MISS KELLY FLOPPED……because the songs in the whole album were mediocre and lacked the element of a real R&B singer…..And like I said, if Donna Summer could ride high with Disco/Dance, then Kelly can still accumulate many of her urban fans to buy her music……She also continues doing R&B the more she is gonna be compared to Bey and the harder it shall be for her to branch out as a singer in her right……
Dance music suits her voice, and it sells her music and she can ride her success in Europe, Asia and America………

I think Kelly will sell well overseas. I am not certain about the US. The lack of promotion here is mind boggling. Motivation should be a much bigger hit besides urban radio. And people are still waiting on Lay It On Me. If she doesn’t get the right promotion, then an opportunity is missed. Especially after her BET performance. And no offense, I wish 50 wouldn’t have said anything. Whenever he tries to promote a female artist, they go under.

I believe Kelly is underrated in the U.S. ,around the world she is not.
Truth.com Kelly is not on Beyonce’s level at all in terms of success in the US. Beyonce can afford some bricks and misses, Kelly cannot. However, I think people are actually feelin’ Kelly now because the music is on point, its not about shading Beyonce.

Ok I’m starting to get a little uneasy reading some of these comments. Fact: Kelly is underrated in the United States. Fact: Kelly’s dance music has been more well received in Europe. Fact: Kelly is making music for the US with a more commercial appeal for the US audience, and it’s working for her. Opinion/Fact: I bought all of her previous albums the day that they were released and they had good material. The new dance and r&b music that she is releasing is killing a lot of her older music. Everything is lining up for Kelly because she took charge of her career. I’m happy for her because she’s a positive person and I applaud anyone who grinds and hustles as hard as she does, being that she is in constant comparison to one of the biggest superstars in the world. I personally had the pleasure of meeting her and if she doesn’t want to be put in a box then don’t box her. I admit I was hyped for the more dance inspired record but I understand what they’re doing with this project, and I haven’t been dissapointed so far.

She is underrated, but she does not have the talent like Beyonce, which 50 cent thinks she has. Though Kelly was the 2nd best in the group..but that’s just my opinion. She did have some hits, but for some reason has not reached the next level. I wish her the best with this album!

I want Kelly to do well to shut her haters up. I also love when Beyonce does well when it comes to the naysayers. What happened to supporting both without trying to trash the other? Honestly Kelly has been given chance after chance to prove herself and if you count her hit and miss averages when it comes to live performances and hits she either doesn’t want to be on beyonce’s level,has horrible management or is just plain out lazy. Kelly Rowland is far from underrated, the true reason she didn’t sell in the past is cause her music was shitty. And before the delusional stans blame it on beyonce, look at Toya she was kicked out and in Bey’s shadow, but Toya still made a #1 album and it went platinum. To sum it all Kelly finally stepped her game up and that’s why she has the buzz now. Ppl need to realise yes Kelly is talented but that didn’t mean she released mediocre music in the past.

KellyMotivation, no shade to Kelly, I just gave the reason why her label doesn’t trust her 100%.She started off with them with a scrapped album, for which the label paid money (studios, producers, composers, musicians) and of course she shot 4 videos (‘Grown Woman’ never surfaced), which also means that money was spent.I actually wish that she did some promo too, but I’m not going to blame her for it (like some people on the page) because I can understand the label’s rationale behind the campaign

Remember Bee basically was Destiny’s child so without them she probably wouldn’t be as big. Kelly would be nowhere however, well probably on the Urban BET grind on a lesser stage than Ciara.
Lets face it, after all the years of DC bootcamp and years as a solo artist, her live performances are DREADFUL. Everyone was raving over that 1 motivation performance but oops SHE WASN’T EVEN SINGING LIVE!!!!
The girl is not under rated at all, if anything, the way you stans talk, she is over rated as hell. She does NOT deserve success and this IS NOT her year. Damn the year is half over and she hasn’t gotten a legitimate number 1. That R n b chart DOES NOT COUNT as is it based on sales? airplay? no because if it was she’d be on the top of the Billboard hot 100. You stans make too much of the little achievements Kelly has, if you remained humble like her and appreciated she was on her grind rather than proclaiming, it’s her year then people wouldn’t come for you. She has featured on everything she possibly can I mean hasn’t she had around 15 SINGLES already from this era, including all the feat. Kelly Rowlands!?!?!? One of them was bound to be a hit. Bottom line is the people behind her need to step up their game on doing promos. In the US I’m seeing more promos for Joss Stone than for Kelly this week. I personally think she’s talented and I would like her cd to hit #1. Her team needs to back her up with having her do more interviews and performances.

And don’t blame Kelly’s team because with “Commander”, “forever in a day” and “RCG”, they made sure she was doing promotions for those songs…….She was on every European TV show and festival, promoting those songs….that is why they did well on the European charts
The problem with Kelly’s team is that, they want her to have success in America also ………hence they think that by promoting Kelly as an R&B singer in the US, she is gonna find more success and might create a name for herself……But here is the thing, she might find success but it won’t be on the long-run …..rather, it will be on the short run…….What her team fails to understand is that for her to continue doing R&B, she is going to be constantly overshadowed/compared to Bey and as compared to her colleagues, she just doesn’t deliver when it comes to making good R&B
Her team needs to continue promoting her as a dance singer and she needs to do many collabs with many dance djs in Europe, Brasil and Asia and elsewhere …when she finds global success then it would be extremely easy for her to officially cross into the American markets with the dance records……..Promoting her as an R&B singer shall only benefit her in the short-run……..

I am not a 50 Cent fan but I have to agree with him. I never really understood why Kelly never got her shine. Not to compare, but she is just as talented and marketable as her previous bandmate. I agree with previous posters in that the problem is material and promotion in Kelly’s case. I hope she makes her mark with her upcoming release.

There is some truth to what 50 said. He knows why Kelly is not more successful, it is way beyond music and talent but activities of powerful people (simply put Freemason, Illuminati, etc.) . Beyonce is good at what she does but many artists are good and don’t get that recognition. It has nothing to do with who can sing, dance or perform better. Like I always said Beyonce is big today because of Jay-Z, not her talent and certainly not her looks. Kelly didn’t have the support back then and even now. She was toooooooooooo naive and toooo complacent in her comfort zone. She believed in her team in the pass to a point where she did not to question decisions that were made. She was complacent, in her comfort zone not to work hard at her vocals, performance and confidence. Kelly and Matthew wreck Kelly’s career, period.

The DEFINITION of “Underrated” means that something is rated too low, and an “Underdog” means someone with little or no staus. Kelly Rowland is a freakin INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR! If you see a picture of her, you know who she is, you know her history in Destiny’s Child and you know she know other aspects of her personal life because she is very well known. She is therefore NOT an “Underdog”, an “Underdog” does not have have lead roles in movies, guest appearances on TV shows, hosts of popular competition shows, international modeling and product spokesperson appeal. Just like 50 said, internationally she is more popular than in the US. But at home she doesn’t SELL or has the PUBLICITY\GOOD MANAGEMENT like overseas, that’s why she stays over there and is doing UK X-Factor because that’s where she recieves the most love. I would love for her to slay in the US, but please DO NOT down rate my beautiful Kelly and call her an “Underdog” cuz bish you know her name! That is all!
