Plenty smart if she’s near the 5M mark in less than one year. 4 will not come anywhere near that pinnacle even with the #1 US album credential. So, the timining of LOUD’s release was plenty smart, indeed.
If her team was really interested in having a #1 album in the US, they would release her eras in the summer, like 4, when there’s no competition. Instead, they released her era in a glut, when the market was at its peak, up against heavy hitters like SuBo and Taylor Swift, and now LOUD has outsold both of their releases, despite both Swift’s and Boyle’s albums having reached #1.
So go on, keep thinking that #1 US album is make or break important. Columbia records would trade 4′s #1 US cred for LOUD’s sales tragectory anyday.

Oh, and what promo would that be? Rihanna performed S&M once at BMA’s after the single peaked at #1. Beyonce performed RTWG twice on BMA’s and Oprah without even half the success. If having huge single sales and tons of airplay that come when your songs smash at radio is your definition of music being shoved down people’s throats, then so be it. Don’t be mad because Rihanna’s music has been in high demand, this era. Beyonce wouldn’t have to rely so much on live promo if she had more hit singles, because ask Ri and Katy, airplay is all the promo you need.
And the nerve of a Beyonce stan, talking about promo. Did Rihanna have a coroporate tie in for LOUD like Beyonce has with Target for 4? Did Rihanna headline Glasto to promote LOUD? Did Rihanna perform on a nationally televised Macy’s special? Did Rihanna’s video for her lead single debut on American Idol? How many singles did Rihanna perform on Idol? Was it two, like Beyonce? How many magazine covers and spreads did Rihanna have before LOUD came out? Was it as many as Beyonce’s? The truth is that Rihanna got more traction out of a ten minute set on UK X-factor (300% sales boost), than Bey got out of headlining Glasto. Rihanna had WAY less promo before LOUD dropped. All that promo for Beyonce and 4 is selling like F.A.M.E. in the US.
