Mariah Carey’s Voice Makes A Comeback Performing ‘I’ll Be There’

Don’t call it a comeback, “it’s” been here for years!

Yesterday Mariah Carey‘s performance of ‘Shake It Off’ didn’t quite satisfy the naysayers who didn’t buy ‘MCIIY’ falsely believe the diva’s iconic vocals are nothing more than a distant memory of yesteryear’s prime.

However, it’s safe to say that her recent performances of ‘I’ll Be There’ and ‘Always Be My Baby’ have led her “Lambs” to the promise land of reassurance in their favorite singer’s set of golden pipes.

Watch the mother of two remind doubters why she’s considered ‘The Voice’ on the other side of the same coin shared with Whitney Houston after the jump.

Pregnancy and a more than lengthy break from alcohol has done wonders for Carey’s 5 octave voice! Following the birth of ‘Roc and Roe‘, the diva’s voice has been nothing less than stellar. An improvement she’s clearly aware of as her default vocal technique is usually a lot more routine and subdued compared to the livelier – off the cuff- approach she implored at Gotham Hall (March 1st).

What’s uniquely interesting about the chart-topper  is her constantly evolving instrument, which undergoes subtle yet ever-present differences with each new era. It’s her intuitive know-how that allows her to bob & weave through a song’s melodic blueprint and pick up the slack where others may [vocally] fall short that distinguishes her from the rest. Whether or not a chest belt is sustained or her high notes pierce the stratosphere–it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what this self-proclaimed “vocal technician” is capable of.

Oh please, just be grateful that Mariah is still alive and stop shading Whitney even after she passed away.

Whitney will always be known as “The Voice”. Mariah will always be known as “Mariah”. There will only be one Whitney, just like there will only be one Mariah, one King of Pop, one Madonna. Stop comparing.

  7. Mike March 3, 2012

Mariahs voice is one of the most beautiful voices ever in the industry and while some people consider that you have to be loud and powerful like Celine or Jennifer for example, its her ability to blend genres and use her voice in so many different ways that set her apart.

Shes a technical genious and no one can deny it!

I’m excited for her new music and I hope she really uses her middle range like she did on the Emotions album!

  10. TheVoice March 3, 2012

    Whitney = The Voice (RIP)
There’s only ONE singer who’s worthy of being called The Voice and that is Whitney Elizabeth Houston. Just like there’s only one Queen of Soul, one King of Pop.
Whitney & Mariah are both two of the greatest singers to ever grace the earth, but first let’s get this straight. No matter how many times ppl try to take this title away from her, whenever people talk about The Voice, it’ll always be Whitney.

  11. Adrian March 3, 2012

Thank you for posting this! I love how she ended IBT with that low note. Mariah definitely knows she’s been putting it down on stage! Super exicted for her new material.

    Mariah sounds phenominal.

Haters will always jump on her performances rather she’s sounding good, or bad. When she’s sounding her best, they still hate by falsely claiming she lips and what not. As if it is impossible for her not to put on a good vocal performance.

Right here during the IBT performance, she has proven that her voice is indeed very clear and on top of its game after giving birth. Hopefully it stays that way throughtout the next album era.

Even during SIO (love the new creative Gospel intro by the way) she sounded amazing. Hopefully Mariah stays away from the alcohol, because she can definitely still blow and is still very much vocally gifted.

I would love to see her continue having better days with her live singing, that way people won’t have s*** to say.

For the record, Frank Sinatra was dubbed “The Voice” long before Whitney was, and I’d appreciate it her stans would by now realize that there is always room for other female singers (Mariah, Celine) besides Whitney herself. Personally, all 3 ladies are in a league of their own.

  17. JER March 3, 2012

OH DAMN. She was reaching for some notes there she usually avoids

  18. whosjus10 March 3, 2012

omg…just give her the credit she deserves. like i REALLY REALLY TRUELY dont understand why people hate her so much. i can understand if she isnt your taste in music but people just hate everything about her yet they dont even know her. what has our society become to. why cant people just accept other people regardless of who they are (i mean unless your like somebody like osama bin laden then i get it) but this is just a regular lady who sings and makes a living off of it. its her job first and foremost and people should recognize that. if you dont think she’s pretty then okay thats cool. there are people who think she is pretty. and im sure some alot of people have flaws in them besides mariah. she isnt the only person in this world. Just start being positive about the people who are making music. regardless if you listen to them or not. and shes not a bad person either…sooooo whaaatttt that she ACTS like a diva. if i had her money and i could get what i wanted because i made my hard earned money then i would be the diva i wanted. I dont know her personally neither do any of her fans. so WHO KNOWS maybe she really is a diva maybe she isnt. maybe its an act…maybe its not. and even if she was a diva its not like shes rude or bitchy. when have you ever SEEN or heard of her doing something rude to somebody or being btichy. she just knows what she wants and how it should be done so thats why she hires people who shes pays to do that. thats THEIR job. im sure if all those people who got ordered around by her hated her or thought she was a diva would quit their jobs but they dont. i mean come on give this lady a break…its not like shes a terrorist or somebody who goes around robbing people and killing people out in the world like so many people that we dont focus our energy on. and SO what that she lipsings sometimes and that her voice is not the same as it was in the 90’s. everybody is different and handles their problems in life differently. nobody except people who are close knows what probably REALLY happened with her voice. we dont know any potential day to day struggles she might be going through. some days she could be having a bad day or just found out something devastating about one of her friends or family and she has a performance that day and just cant get it together because of it. She is human. leave the girl alone. i MEAN im sure she could give a rats ass about what people think about her in this day in time. she is 42 years old and has children to worry about, a husband that is sick still and then her own personal problems too. im sure if all of you peoples favorite artist or band had something happen to them you would want all the support you could get from other fans like yourselves.

  19. dee March 3, 2012

Great improvement from the Shake it off performance. However Mariah’s voice usually sounds strangled.
How dare you call Mariah The Voice! Whitney will always own that title.

  20. Nichole March 3, 2012

    I HATED the ABMB performance.

Some chick ruined it by trying to sing along, and sounded awful. Yikes. I had to turn the vid off because I was getting annoyed.

I look forward to the remainding 5 videos, especially Hero because she struggles with that one at time.

  21. Please Dont Tourture Us Grandma March 3, 2012

Her voice is so annoying and screechy..like an old truck going down the hill and then push the brake.

  29. Onyx March 3, 2012

  30. YOOSONDALOOSE March 3, 2012

WOW. Mimi is owning, so good!

  31. just sayin’ March 3, 2012

I’ll Be There was GREAT. Mariah was using her vocals this night. Her lower register in that ending was PERFECTION. As far as her new voice, its been 20 years plus with Mariah Carey. She sounds good for someone of her vocal abilities for singing 20 years non stop

  32. NikkiIsChillin March 3, 2012

    Mariah sounds great. Love her!!

  33. JP March 3, 2012

I’m still mad she never released Migrate as a single.

I’m never been a hardcore Mariah fan…but It’s Mariah…how can you not be excited for new music from her? Hope her next album performs well.

  34. NewF*YorkBabe. March 3, 2012

    Mariah sounds better then ever!!!!!!

No one will Ever sound like Mariah. Never have we heard such a unique and interesting voice. Take it high, low, soft or hardcore; she can take you anywhere.

Let the Hater’s hate. People take about her weight, cause you can’t touch That voice of her’s.

  35. amazing March 3, 2012

I love how all of you are riding on Whitney now…the difference between Mariah and Whitney? Consistency…Mariah’s fans were always there, no one ever labeled her, even after her breakdown she had support. Whitney…she had to die for you f**** to acknowledge she was talented. But how talented? She was a voice, that was it. Not a writer, not a producer, just a voice. Mariah…the complete package. Writer. Producer. Artist. AMAZING VOICE. No one in the industry is more well rounded as an artist as MARIAH CAREY. So keep hating on her, keep saying Whitney is better than her…because if Whitney was alive and they both were up there singing right now, Mariah would sound a whole hell of a lot better. I don’t care what Whitney’s voice USED to sound like, fact of the matter is Mariah’s numbers, desire to imporve, and lack of self destruction make her pivotal. I’ll be damned if Mariah’s items go up for auction or house for foreclosure when her time comes…she’s too smart (and fact of the matter has more money than Whitney would have ever seen considering Whitney was just a contract artist). Where’s Whitney’s legacy?…oh yeah, it’s being purchased by “fans.”…you guys are clowns.

  36. Nichole March 3, 2012

    EXCELLENT POST, Amazing.

The best I’ve seen in a long time.

You’re definitely gonna hit hard among Whit fans with that one lol.

And you are correct. While Whit only had a voice, Mariah had EVERYTHING. It’s just too bad Mariah’s artistry is so underrated because many people still refuse to give her credit for that.

  37. JAKE March 3, 2012

    OH PLEASE!!!!!!!

CERTAIN “N*****” & “NIGGETTES” NEED TO SHUT THE F*** UP!!!!!!!

WHEREAS WHITNEY ELIZABETH HOUSTON WILL ALWAYS BE THE #1 POWER-VOICE TO HAVE EVER GRACED THE EARTH – MARIAH CAREY’S ARTISTRY IS WAY MORE PIVOTAL & PRESTIGIOUS THAN THAT OF WHITNEY’S!!!!!!!

MARIAH HAS 18 #1’S ON THE BB HOT 100, 16 OF WHICH SHE WROTE AND THE OTHER TWO BEING SONGS THAT SHE CO-WROTE!!!!!!!

SHE ALSO HAS TWO OF THE BEST SELLING ALBUMS WORLWIDE IN THE TOP 10 LIST (THE ONLY FEMALE WHO HAS THIS DISTINCTION):

MUSIC BOX = 32 MILLION WW

    DAYDREAM = 30 MILLION WW

THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI & HER 1ST CHRISTMAS ALBUM ARE ALSO AMONG THE TOP 20 WITH 17 MILLION WW EACH!!!

STOP TRYING TO DENOUNCE MARIAH AS IF SHE’S NOTHING GREAT OR IS A HAS-BEEN! WHERE WERE YOU ALL WHEN WHITNEY WAS STILL AT HOME SNORTING AND SNIFFING AWAY? WHERE WAS THE SUPPORT THEN? MOST OF YOU PROBABLY DON’T EVEN HAVE HER LAST ALBUM DO YOU?

  38. roberta March 3, 2012

yes mariah sing it …you are the original never duplicated…show these brats what real singing is about!! you are famous cuz of your voice unlike others!

Looking forward Mariahs new album, hope she slays!!!!! Its time for talented people make a comeback to the top of the charts. Im telling you some of this kids dont realize that Gaga,Rihanna,Beyonce,Christina,Britney were ALL listening non stop in their bedrooms Miss Mariah Carey when they were growing up and its time Mariah receive the TOTAL RESPECT she deserves.

  46. JohnVidal (RIPWhitney-true great) March 3, 2012

She sounded really great at the beggining and at the end of I´ll be There, like she is Mariah carey, noone sings that way, she is absolutely unique, that´s why she is part of the vocal trinity and your favs are lessers compared to them
For once, this TGJ explained perfectly why. Some dumb people can´t comprehend why some nowadays superstars have average voices compared to them (yes Beyonce, not to mention the usual nonsingers out there)
And are people serious still comparing Whitney and Mariah!!! Please, this is 2012, and both are true greats, but for different reasons. Them two and Celine are on a league of their own even if they couldn´t sing a single note anymore

  47. Bobby Bulgaria March 3, 2012

    Yeah… Demhaters keep hating… Mariah keeps singing…
    And she’s kicking some gimmicky non-singing clown’s ass… 🙂

    Regarding THE VOICE:

While Whitney was one of the greatest singers of our time, Mariah owns the most unique VOICE ever… 🙂

  48. *NEWBIE March 3, 2012

I agree with AMAZING – On the surface Mariah seems like a pebble brain barbie…but I wholly believe that she’s playing a character – something she groomed, practiced and is very well aware of. A personality that unfortunately underrates her talents…and focuses too much on the external. Much like Marilyn Monroe. However, if you look closer, you can see a champion with traits that only a handful of entertainers truly possess…determination, ambition, and a work ethic that most can only imagine. She proved all these qualities seven years ago when every possible odd was stacked up against her. Put any of these bubble gum size 0 “singers” that are currently at the top of the charts into THAT situation ten years ago. Do we all believe that they would ultimately prevail? I certainly don’t. So give credit where credit is due – you can’t possibly imagine that achieving all that she has in the past is due to riding on the coattails of other big shot music heavyweights…check the song credits, album credits, music video credits…Mariah’s name will appear more than once, occupying more than one position. I don’t “stan” for Mariah, or any artist, but Mariah is one of the few celebrities/entertainers that I truly respect, despite of what appears on the surface.
Take note. I’m doing this while Mariah is ALIVE. I’m not just going to bandwagon on the train of endless praise when she’s cold, dead, and under the ground.

  49. FanOfMusic March 3, 2012

***BOWZ DOW TO NEWBIE*** U betta preach!!

Just looking at the picture posted with this article, look how amazing she looks in her 40’s. Mother of twin babies with a body like that. Her talent is so undeniable. She sounds great by the way. Can’t wait for the new music

  50. just sayin March 3, 2012

Ok so am I the only one who was wishing the person singing in the backround would STFU! seriously I was so distracted by it. That is all

  51. dee March 3, 2012

How can anyone say that Mariah voice was better than Whitney! David Foster and Babyface who worked with both artist had to admit that Whitney voice was superior. I cant imagine Mariah belting I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing or All The Man I Need.

  52. Dunk March 3, 2012

    she sounds f***** amaaaazing!

  53. Always love you, Whitney (RIP) March 3, 2012

Man, I thought she would blow me away but not impressed. But I guess she’s had her days. Oh well, she better get in the studio and get the autotune cranking.

  54. Raquanzalee March 3, 2012

@*NEWBIE, my thoughts exactly! Thank you!

AND of course there will always be those jealous haterz out there who have nothing better to do than hate. Mariah’s talent is truly unparalleled, she has been around for many years and seen the rise and fall of many a starlet but she has still prevailed and will continue to do so.

    Her voice sounds incredible lately!!

This was Mariah’s best performance in years! Happy to hear. I followed Mariah since 1990. When most of you so-called “lambs” were still in yo daddys nutsack. Most of yall stupid asses only became fans after “We Belong Together” anyway. Getting back to the subject at hand, the reason why Mariah gets hated on and doesn’t seem to get the respect Whitney got is because she acts like a stupid little girl. Trying so hard to be a starlet half her age by desperate putting out garbage material produced by hip-hop producers with uninspired melodies and juvenile lyrics that don’t showcase her vocal abilities. She’s not Rihanna or some one note manufactured bubble gum pop star. She’s Mariah F****** Carey and she’s way better than that.

Mimi’s last albums E=MC2 and especially “Memoirs” in my opinion were garbage and the record sales reflect that fact. Now yall may think I’m hating on Mimi but truth is, I’m not. I love Mimi. I loved Mimi since ’90. I’m only critical of her cause I know what’s capable of. She’s one of the best singers in the world. Unfortunately she’s trying too hard to fit onto today’s Hip-Hop and R&B radio market by acting like an artist that she isn’t. She can sing her ass off. Why the f*** is she putting out albums with material suited for someone like Ciara??!!

Anyway what I hope for Mariah now is that since she got married and had two kids, that she finally grows the f*** up. Stop the little girl persona. She’s f****** 42 years old. It’s time to be grown and s***. No, I ain’t saying she should fill up an album of all ballads and go strictly Adult contemporary and s*** but perhaps look to Emancipation again for inspiration. Go back to basics perhaps or draw on her life experience as being a wife and mother.

    ::sips tea::

Now.. regarding Miss Whitney Houston aka “The Voice”… Sorry but you fuckers need to understand NO ONE but her can be called “The Voice”. Mariah is good, very good but Whitney (’85-’98) had better stage presence and a stronger, more controlled voice. Mariah had song writing/producing capabilities to her belt and a higher octave range. Both have advantages and disadvantages but I as much as I love Mimi, I have to give a slight edge to Whitney. Why? Three reasons: “One Moment In Time”, “Star Spangled Banner” and “I Will Always Love You”. Those 3 songs were more than songs, they hit a nerve and touched people. Mariah never had a Whitney moment singing the national anthem on a baseball game. Yes she’s done it but no one cared or remembered it 20 years later like they did with Whitney. Even people who didn’t like Whitney were touched by that s***. Where’s Mariah’s “Bodyguard”? “Glitter”? lmao don’t get me started. Okay okay there was “I’ll Be There” on MTV’s Unplugged and “Hero” but they pale in comparison to Whitney moments. Even Whitney saying “Crack is Wack”, “Hell to the no” and “Kiss My Ass” are far more memorable lmao.

At the end of the day I loved them both and I’m glad Mariah is still out there doing her thing.

You can never compare Mariah Carey and Whitney Houstone, they are too good, incomparable, wonderful, Loving, Iconic Woman, I have Love for them both. And how I wish Roe can Sing like her Mum and Boby-Chris:). Much Love.

  63. Munya December 29, 2012

Mariah was not only named the voice, but she also got the title of “songbird supreme”. When she popped onto the scene in 1990, she became bigger than radio itself because her voice and her capability was beyond anything the world had ever heard.
Mariah had versatility, consistency, accuracy of pitch, a wider and flexible range and superior vocal quality.
Many of u say Mariah could never take on “I will always love u” but I beg to differ. She has made remakes of songs and done them 100times better than the originals. She took “against all odds” to #1 in the UK, “I’ll be there” was a hit in the USA and I want to know what love is topped a total of 27weeks at #1 in Brazil. Anything that Mariah touches with that incredible incomparable musical talent that is all rounded turns to gold. Even listen to her rendition of Open arms and Endless love- they all prove Mariah is the queen.
Take a look at her Christmas albums- I had the chance ot listen to Whitney’s and Celines renditions of O Holy Night and none measure up to what Mariah Carey delivered. One surely gets goosebumps and an out of this world feeling when Mariah belts those notes.
Even Simon Cowell mentioned it- to sing a whitney houston song is difficult but to sing a Mariah Carey song is vocal s******. I bet Mariah can sing any Whitney Houston song- but Whitney (RIP) or any other artist would never have pulled off Emotions, Vision of Love, Fly Like A Bird, Anytime You Need a Friend, You’re So Cold, If its Over- the list goes on- with the accuracy and tenacity that Mariah has and well their vocal ranges would so limit them.
I respect Whitney, but her talent was not unique- even Cece Winans can belt out I will always love u, maybe better cause she proved her ability on “count on me”.
Mariah is the queen, thats why even after Whitney had started earlier than her, she was named the artist of the millenium cause she changed music forever.
Long live the queen: MC Forever! #L4L
